Wdym? There's a "Privacy by design" section:

> You’re in charge of what gets captured, and a glowing indicator light lets others know when you’re recording. We prioritize on-device processing, so you’re in control of permissions when third parties request camera or microphone access with internet connectivity.

I still don't know if I'd trust them, but they at least address it.

JeffeFawkes··on 'Death to Spotify': the DIY movement to get artists and fans to quit the app
Apple Music gave me a 90 day trial as soon as this Spotify snafu started, and it imported all but maybe 50 of my 5000+ songs from Spotify without issue, including King Gizz. I haven't touched Spotify so far this month, and I think I'm going to cancel it. I would say the music discovery features on Music are worse, but I also haven't tried to use them much yet. (That, and Spotify had gone massively downhill, I'd be lucky to get one or two new songs a month I liked with their recommendation pipeline. Which is a shame, because it used to be one of the best for me.)
JeffeFawkes··on Ask HN: What's a good 3D Printer for sub $1000?
Regarding Z-homing being last - usually endstop positions are on Z-, not Z+, so they do a bit of a hop (2-10mm upwards Z) before the X and Y homing so they don't crash the head. If your Z endstop is on Z-, you can home that first since you know the head is out of the way.

EDIT: to be specific, this is for "bed-slinger" printers, but the concept is the same for fixed height tool head printers (eg where the bed is what's raised and lowered).

JeffeFawkes··on VMware's in court again. Customer relationships rarely go this wrong
If your name or email address has non-alphanumeric characters, their entire authorization/EULA flow breaks silently. I had to use an old email to get it to work.
JeffeFawkes··on VMware's in court again. Customer relationships rarely go this wrong
Yep! I use it to run SolidWorks on my M1 Macbook. (They sure don't make it easy, though - one of their many EULA approval steps fails silently if you have any non-alphanuneric characters in your name or email address. Feels par for the course with bigcorp software that assumes you'll have an IT team to deal with things.)
JeffeFawkes··on The cultural evolution of distortion in music
It has been worked into a tune! Love this artist (Venjent), he takes a lot of random samples like that and turns them into EDM tunes.

JeffeFawkes··on EU confirms Apple can make a portless iPhone without USB-C
On the bright side, the official apple adapters are $10 and have a legitimately alright DAC in them (including mic input). I picked up a couple to use with pcs and laptops since I generally have better luck with the OEM apple adapters vs the onboard audio (which usually applies weird EQ and FX - looking at you, Dell).

I've been having good luck on my M1 Max MBP with Whisky, which uses Apple's game porting toolkit: https://getwhisky.app/
JeffeFawkes··on If AI is helping people code better, why aren't products getting better?
My theory... Being able to code well or fast doesn't one to one translate to a good end user experience. The strength of your org's ability to determine good features and iterate on them from a product perspective is what matters, and that /can/ potentially happen faster if AI is enabling faster development, but it's not guaranteed.

Even if we had a magic box that results in perfect code coming out every time for a given feature description, that doesn't mean the feature itself is good or well thought out.

JeffeFawkes··on Microsoft will try the data-scraping Windows Recall feature again in October
Off, for now... Until a future windows update post-install nag screen uses dark UX patterns to turn it on, probably as part of some other "yes, shut up, let me use my computer" button.
JeffeFawkes··on Backdoor in RFID cards allows instant cloning
"Additional research revealed a hardware backdoor that allows authentication with an unknown key. Teuwen then used the new attack to obtain (“crack”) that secret key and found it to be common to all existing FM11RF08S cards."

Static key, decrypts all cards of a given model regardless of user stored keys? Yep, it's a backdoor.

JeffeFawkes··on A free tool to quickly detect counterfeit flash (2017)
I picked up a handful of "580gb" microSD cards off AliExpress recently, with the goal of using them in mp3 players around the house. I figured they'd be reject 64gb sdcards, and I was right - they averaged 50-58gb of usable storage. Perfect for writing once, reading many times, and cheaper than even 16gb legit cards. They can be useful, just know they may also die at any moment.
JeffeFawkes··on A most profound video game: a good cognitive aid for research
Game jam - like a hackathon, for games. Groups are given a theme or conditions and a short time (eg a weekend) to make a game as a challenge / for fun.

Demake - remaking a game for a more limited set of hardware. Remake normally implies increasing quality, whereas a demake is focused on cramming as much quality as possible in a much more constrained execution environment. (In this case, a PC/iOS game to a Pico-8 game.)

JeffeFawkes··on Wine 9.9 (Dev) – Run Windows Applications on Linux, BSD, Solaris and macOS
Being able to use VSTs outside of windows sounds fantastic! How's the latency? Would you mind sharing some details about your setup? I'd love to use my Steam Deck as a tiny VST host for live play.

Check out Korg Gadget![0] It's got an Ableton-Live-style clip launcher that's easy to compose in, and a variety of "gadget" instruments that produce different kinds of sounds. If you balk at $30 for an app, it goes on sale for half price a good 3-4 times a year, usually around holidays. You can hook up any midi devices (BLE midi or via the USB camera kit adapter, if not on a usbc iPad). If you've got an iPad with a headphone jack you can pick up an iRig clone for <$10 that gets you line / mic / guitar input, too.

If you've got an iPad that's probably the best start (it'll run on any iPad 2 or above). It will run on iPhone's but it's a bit harder to play. There's also a Nintendo Switch version (it's more limited, eg no audio recording or export), and a mac version (but it's pricey). Annoyingly, the Mac and iOS versions are separate, but at least the iPhone and iPad versions come together as one purchase.

If you make your own buildroot image, you can get VERY quick boot times - here's a random vid I found [1] with 3.5 seconds on a pi zero w (which is considerably less powerful than a Pi3.

I've worked with similarly underpowered boards (licheepi zero, only has 64mb ram and uses the cpu from a dashcam!) and those will still boot and start an SDL app in under five seconds.

If you can identify the bare minimum that you need for your EQ solution, you can probably get similar boot times.

JeffeFawkes··on Stable Diffusion XL 1.0
Thanks! I guess I'll stick to running it on my Macbook for the time being until the quantized model gets uploaded. What kind of performance are you seeing with the FP16 weights on the iPad? I've run a few SD2.0-based (unquantized) models on my 2020 iPad Pro but it seems like it gets thermally throttled after a while.
JeffeFawkes··on Stable Diffusion XL 1.0
Is this using Draw Things, or another app? Did you have to quantize the model first?

Counterpoint - you can play the digital copy of Mario Kart twice at the same time. The first Switch (or whatever you designate as the "main" Switch for your account) can launch the game regardless of online status, while the second has to check every time - annoying, but not unheard of (PS4/5 does something similar).

You can run the game on both Switches at once, with one license - something you can't do with physical. But it's a massive trade-off since no online or store shutdown means you're stuck, whereas a cart should work forever.

JeffeFawkes··on Managers, stop distracting employees
I'm a relatively new team lead (this is my second year with the title officially, though I did TL responsibilities prior) and my entire goal is to be the antithesis of the type of manager mentioned in the article. My best managers were ones that let me focus and removed roadblocks, so I try to do the same. Ideally, my team has zero to one meetings per day (stand-up inclusive); I'd rather them focus on development than get caught up in unnecessary meetings. As a result, I'm often in meetings instead (which is fine) and then can give my appropriate teammates the outcomes of those chats. Everything else should be offline / async where possible, and I try to prefix those slack messages with a priority level so they can tell at a glance whether a given message can be safely ignored until a break between work items.

So far my team seems to love this arrangement, but I'm curious if anyone has advice on the long term effects of this approach.

For what it's worth, the on-screen keyboard is kind of awful. You can also type using the two thumb touchpads, so I guess you could do it with that, but it sounds like an exercise in frustration unless you're using an external keyboard of some sort.
JeffeFawkes··on Meta VR prototypes aim to make VR 'indistinguishable from reality'
Windows Mixed Reality does this, and remarkably well. Launch an app from the VR "start menu" and it'll open as a floating window positionable in 3D space. Bonus is that you can use your mouse and keyboard still in VR, with mouse / keyboard focus on the window you're gazing at.

Downside: as far as I know, you need a WMR headset to use it. There might be mods to use the Mixed Reality Portal (the VR window manager) with other headsets, though.

Here's a random YouTube video demonstrating it: https://youtu.be/gPkcDg8IECU
