JeffL··on Tesla sues former employees for allegedly stealing data, Autopilot source code
Isn't that potentially billions of dollars worth of stolen IP? That's not cool.

JeffL··on Star Citizen: The Road to Release, Financials and New Partners
Happy to share more information but don't want to hijack the thread too much. Would love to talk to you about this stuff sometime if you'd be interested. My email is in my profile.
JeffL··on Star Citizen: The Road to Release, Financials and New Partners
It's interesting reading this thread as one of the founders of Star Sonata, a space MMO that launched in 2004. Star Citizen has a lot of hype and a lot of money, but people seem to hate the game/results. Our players for the most part love our game and keep playing and subscribing even after more than a decade, but I can't for the life of me get the marketing right, so have been unable to bring in new players in any kind of numbers. I just wish 1% of the players who paid for Star Citizen even knew about Star Sonata.

For a while back in 2007-ish Google ads were working really well and bringing in paying players at about $35 cost to acquire each and they were worth more than $200 over their lifetime, but something changed almost over night and Google ads got more competitive and almost no amount of money would bring people in. I'm sitting here with a game that people like and will pay for but can't figure out anymore how to acquire them.

JeffL··on A new study says services like Uber and Lyft are causing urban traffic woes
Need more tunnels. Call the Boring Company.
JeffL··on NTSB: Autopilot steered Tesla car toward traffic barrier before deadly crash
A human driver crashed in that same exact spot one week earlier, so you can't really say AP is necessarily worse because of this accident.
JeffL··on Why the Update Fever Is Bad
I stopped letting my iPhone update. I swear every update makes it slower and buggier. My old iPad which was perfectly fast and great at the time is now almost unusable after 4 iOS upgrades. It won't even play Sudoko without constant mini freezes.
JeffL··on Tesla Semi
On a YouTube stream we were watching, I saw at least one fold down passenger seat in the truck cabin. Not sure how comfortable it would be, though.
JeffL··on Foxconn to Build $10B Factory in U.S
Many would argue that job subsidies like this are the opposite of capitalism. Under a free market, the government wouldn't be subsidizing anything.
JeffL··on My Family’s Slave
> My wife and I live in California, a community property state. At the moment we married, everything that is mine became hers and vice versa.

This is not correct according to my understanding. Community property is anything that is acquired after marriage (not including inheritance), any house that you both live in, or any accounts that become commingled during the marriage. If you have an investment account before marriage that you don't use to pay for stuff and don't add to with salary, then it remains individual property, even in California. I think being a community property state just means that community property is mandated to be split 50/50, not that all property becomes instantly community.

JeffL··on They Used To Last 50 Years
Tesla's battery recycling program sounds pretty impressive, and the cost of new batteries is lower every year. https://www.tesla.com/blog/teslas-closed-loop-battery-recycl...
JeffL··on Reddit overhauls upvote algorithm to thwart cheaters
It would be interesting if instead of just up and down arrows, you could tag posts as "insightful", "funny", or "inspiring". Too often, the up votes are used for things that are funny, and throwaway one liners and memes dominate all the popular subreddits. I would love to support by insightful and get discussions similar to HN.
JeffL··on Musk Declares Tesla Free of Factory Hell with Targets Intact
Our two electric cars are powered entirely by solar.
JeffL··on Master Plan, Part Deux
Maybe that would be a good thing? Without need for parking, commercial districts could get denser and denser, and people could have nice large homes far away for cheaper than ever. If the cars aren't causing pollution or gridlock, what's so bad about living in the suburbs?
JeffL··on Master Plan, Part Deux
But with Tesla's open policies, such as open sourcing all their patents, maybe they will happily supply Uber with all the self driving cars Uber might want, plus the API's to remotely control them?
JeffL··on Bayesian Analysis of Racial Bias in Police Shootings in the United States
But without the war on drugs, the number of bad guys goes way down, doesn't it?
JeffL··on A world where everyone has a robot: why 2040 could blow your mind
I was just responding to the question: When was the last time you used a product and said “this is vastly better?”
JeffL··on A world where everyone has a robot: why 2040 could blow your mind
My iPhone and iPad. It's not that many years that I've had them and they are nothing like anything I ever used before.

My dad's electric RAV4 made with Tesla components. That thing is so quiet and smooth and can accelerate like crazy.

My quadcoptor with HD camera is pretty awesome, and unlike anything available before.

Uber feels vastly superior to me than taxis or even renting a car in some cases.

This one might be weird, but I play a lot of games, and I feel like Heroes of the Storm which came out last year is vastly better than any other game I've ever played in my life. Maybe that's just me? :)

Reading HN and Reddit is a vastly superior experience to reading newspapers and magazines.

I feel very excited to be alive with all the innovation going on.

JeffL··on Twitter’s User Growth Goes Nowhere as It Meets Revenue Expectations of $710M
And anything really interesting on Twitter gets liked from Reddit, so no need to follow Twitter independently.
JeffL··on Show HN: Play Go Against a Deep Neural Network
Check out Sensei's Library Go wiki, Nick Sibicky on YouTube, and Janice Kim's "Learn to Play Go" series of books, IMO.

Also, the "Hikaro no Go" anime series is absolutely wonderful, and that takes Hikaro from a young and completely new to Go kid through to being a professional, with short instructional videos for kids after each episode.

JeffL··on Ask HN: Any Go players here? (Not the language)
When I was first learning, I mostly played against the computer. You can lose a lot faster that way, since the computer plays quickly, and it will brutally punish really newbie mistakes, so you can learn to avoid doing really stupid things before venturing against another human.
JeffL··on Diet that mimics fasting appears to slow aging
I think they are often also dehydrated, full of bug bites, uncomfortable, lacking sleep, and stressed out, so not sure how comparable it would be to fasting in the 1st world.
JeffL··on When I heard about Soylent, I thought my prayers had been answered. I was wrong
I agree with a lot of this. I have a lot of Soylent bags lying around, but I continually fail to make it in advance so it can chill, and once I do, I have a hard time eating it all before it expires. If I could just think, "I want some Soylent" and then have some Soylent, I would be eating it way, way more.

JeffL··on Ask HN: What do you wish you had known before you turned 40?
I wish I took better care of my knees. It's important to do quad strengthening and hamstring stretching. Just playing a lot of soccer and basketball by themselves can lead to loss of cartilage and having to give it all up.
JeffL··on Straighter Teeth by Mail
I had metal braces as a teenager, and now about 20 weeks into Invisalign as a 40 year old to close a gap from a lost tooth, and my god, the Invisalign is wonderful compared to the metal braces.

Almost no pain, super convenient, and eating is normal. I remember all the times I used to have to eat by smashing food against the roof of my mouth with my tongue, because my teeth hurt so much from newly-tightened metal.

JeffL··on NASA’s Orion Spacecraft Splashes Down in Pacific After Test Flight
How does this compare to what SpaceX is doing? Does it make sense for NASA to be doing this in parallel with Dragon?
JeffL··on I miss Google wave
It was so cool, except that the scroll bars were terrible and it didn't work with existing email, so it wasn't really usable.
JeffL··on Why Inequality Matters
Very interesting and thought-provoking point. Although on the other hand, I personally think that Bill Gates, acting as a king and trying to figure out what he thinks will do the most justice and good, is going to do better for the world than what people in a democracy will vote for themselves. Democracy has given us unbalanced budgets, runaway debt, pointless wars, and corrupting entitlements. Bill Gates is doing some amazing and wonderful things.

Not saying that monarchy is better than democracy. Democracy is best at protecting rights, which is the function of government. But as for making the world a better place, really, individuals are probably best at that.
