Jedi72··on Information operations directed at Hong Kong
Best example of Market-ganda ever, marketers protecting their own. 6 names for the same idea - manipulating others for self-gain.
Jedi72··on Information operations directed at Hong Kong
China will not be able to shoot down satellites just to stop video feeds escaping. Its an act of war. Also the USA will surely have capabilities to resist such attacks, and it only takes 1 stream to get through.

Democracy/free-enterprise need only hold its nerve, and it will win. Not for some moral reason, but simply because the overhead of maintaining a police-state is so much greater than a transparent society.

Jedi72··on Résumés Are Starting to Look Like Instagram, and Sometimes Even Tinder
I gave been waiting #HotPrivilege or equivalent to become a trending hashtag since this whole privilege-acknowledging affair got started.
Jedi72··on US Visa Forms DS-160, 260 Has Social Media Questions Now – Samples
Yep, applying for a US visa now.

I wonder what the actual changes are, is someone in ICE stalking your FB looking for pro-Hillary memes or something? For anyone who actually needed a security clearance, they wouldn't need you to volunteer it.

Jedi72··on Why do people mock vegans?
With issues like climate change its also easy to point the finger at government or big business, aka someone else. Veganism shnes a light on the questionable morality of individuals, which most people cant handle so they react angrily.
Jedi72··on Chaos in Hong Kong as hundreds of masked men assault protesters, journalists
All of the west is shaped by America's dominance. Without their influence I suspect many typically western countries would be far more tyranically run.
Jedi72··on The reliability pillar of the AWS Well-Architected Framework [pdf]
This is total submarine marketing by AWS. Im sure some very smart people with good intentions at AWS produced this, but the fact is they're not an independent academic providing objectively "the best" practices, they're a company trying to sell you something. They probably in full belief in their own abilities believe the AWS way of doing things is best, but frankly, I know as much as you do, or at least if you want to win me over you need to comprehensively prove it, not just preach from the hill.

TL:DR stop telling me you're doing better architectures in the same of selling me something

Jedi72··on How we built a serverless architecture with AWS
Yo dawg I heard you like job security, so we put a program in your program, now you you can render while you render

More seriously, I do understand the difference, but disagree with the whole approach in 95% of cases

Jedi72··on How we built a serverless architecture with AWS
SSR is the future? What has PHP been doing for 15+ years?
Jedi72··on WWII Propaganda Popularized Myth That Carrots Help You See in the Dark (2013)
I imagine they still are, and the fact we dont really recognise it is a testament to their success.
Jedi72··on Apple has pushed a silent Mac update to remove hidden Zoom web server
My coworker owes me lunch, I said they would yank the Zoom app for breaking the app stores TOS (close enough hahaha). Apple cant be very happy with public companies breaking their platform, especially in the name of "UX", which is supposed to be (and is) their differentiator.
Jedi72··on Zoom fixes major Mac webcam security flaw with emergency patch
Their latest patch they rushed out is basically just implementing uninstall the way it should be.
Jedi72··on Zoom fixes major Mac webcam security flaw with emergency patch
In my case there isnt anything I didnt expect. Also closing the apps that were running e.g. RabbitMQ actually stopped the webservers.
Jedi72··on Zoom fixes major Mac webcam security flaw with emergency patch
The security flaw isnt even the outrageous part. It was secretly installing webservers that dont even remove themselves when you uninstall the app that makes them scum.
Jedi72··on Vulnerability in the Mac Zoom client allows malicious websites to enable camera
I uninstalled it via their new patch, but it doesnt remove all files. I think its just caches and logs left but who knows. If you want to purge this malware with fire you still need to follow the instructions at https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/358651/unable-to-c...
Jedi72··on Vulnerability in the Mac Zoom client allows malicious websites to enable camera
Hes my direct report-to and has ears of everyone that matters, so its really just my decision of who to pester to get it up the chain.
Jedi72··on Vulnerability in the Mac Zoom client allows malicious websites to enable camera
Now go explain that to the folks in Marketing.
Jedi72··on Vulnerability in the Mac Zoom client allows malicious websites to enable camera
Well, the company and product are dead to me now, gonna hassle our CTO to switch. I just really hope theres some dev at Zoom who hated this whole installing backdoors idea who's gonna have the greatest "I told you so" day at the office tomorrow.
Jedi72··on Ten Years of Erlang
I work with Ruby and Elixir daily and Elixir is 10x faster. Phoenix recently added functionality to display response times in microseconds, partially as a showcase for its good performance. I dont doubt you can get more performance in C++ or something but its still lighting compared to Ruby.
Jedi72··on Paper Books Can’t Be Shut Off from Afar
One of my favourite subreddits is r/aboringdystopia (about how we live in a boring dystopian world) and one recent trending post was about Microsoft shutting down their ebooks business, which means booka bought there will all stop working due to DRM. That was the phrase in the meme - "Due to corporate budget cuts, on April 2 the books will stop working". Very dystopic.
Jedi72··on Artificial gravity breaks free from science fiction
turbolift
Jedi72··on As a system programming language, C still deserves learning today
Its 2019, there are great people with 10+ year careers who've never touched C, in school or work.
Jedi72··on Pennsylvania Is First State to Use Automated System to Expunge Criminal Records
Where you see efficiency, a silicon valley MBA sees opportunity.
Jedi72··on Life is fractal, but markets are square
> one of the main functions of a nation-state is to put up defence against other nation-states

This is the synergystic existense between so-called leaders. They keep each-other in power, both using the threat of the other.

Jedi72··on FedEx sues U.S. government over 'impossible' task of policing exports to China
The US could give up their priviledged position in the anglosphere and give all of us who are currently just along for the ride (i.e. weaker weatern nations) a real shot at the democracy they so fervently sprout. I forsee more colsolidation along the lines of the EU where western powers officially come together to maintain their top status, but as a whole rather than individual nations. A situatiom which comes with its own benefits & issues...
Jedi72··on Generative Adversarial Networks – The Story So Far
It also explains that the training is basically done when the discriminator has a roughly 50% (random) ability to discern between real and fake.
Jedi72··on Facebook moderators break NDAs to expose working conditions
What legislation? Specifically? What do you want to make law, that they have to hire moderators (which they already do?) or do you want to make it illegal to post "bad things" on the internet?
Jedi72··on Ask HN: What can I do to accelerate scientific research?
Somewhere we computing folk lost our way - nobody needs software just for the sake of it (with the exception of maybe games). Everything we do is supposed to be building tools for other people who do the real work to make their life easier. As opposed to how it currently is which is to provide something for free, then put up artificial barriers to certain parts of it and charge for their removal.
Jedi72··on WeChat is Watching: Living in China with the app that knows everything about me
Damn, I sure hope nobody screenshots this or I wont be able to fly a plane into the Sydney Opera house like I'm planning to do next week.
Jedi72··on “Man Becomes the Sex Organs of the Machine World” (2012)
I dont think we need the singularity for machines to take over. The systems that run society are bigger than any of us and nobody can hold every single one of them in their head. If some emergent property or bug cropped up, most people would keep doing what the computer says, because theyre a small fish and we do what the system tells us. Whos the master now?
