Jataman606··on Just witnessed a missile strike on Kyiv city
> Their objective is the targetting of specific individuals who are involved in the conflict, wherever they are.

If they could target specific individuals they definitely would, just like Ukrainian forces killed many high ranking officers (including generals). The fact they don't is just proof they can't.

Jataman606··on The Future of the Web Is on the Edge
> 4) Performance evangelists and salesmen will try to convince everyone they need to get a response in 50ms, but for most use cases that's just ridiculous. Most people are fine getting a response in under a second. Just use a CDN for your static assets and your monolith will be fine.

That would be true if loading website was just single request. But today web apps load multiple requests and probably even more in the background since so many use microservices. When you say 200ms it sounds fast enough, but usually end result is between 3 and 5 seconds combined. If every request would go from 200 ms to 50 ms, total load time would be closer to 1 second, which is fast enough.

Jataman606··on Facebook reportedly laying off thousands of employees
Definitely it is big difference. In first you get fired without any reason. In second your manager is told to find any reason to fire your.
Jataman606··on It's time to halt starting any new projects in C/C++
> Rust has only one real compiler

I never understood why it is a problem for some people. Single compiler means more people working on it instead of recreating same work multiple times (modules and coroutines are still not fully supported across all 3 biggest compilers).

Jataman606··on Online art communities begin banning AI-generated images
Yes, and just like in communities described in this article, AI is banned from human competition. You can use it to practice, but you can't go to the tournament with your own chess engine and say that you deserve that win, because you programmed this chess engine.
Jataman606··on I assure you, medieval people bathed (2019)
> Soap is literally just a fatty acid salt with some phytochemicals that have antimicrobial properties

It sounds literally like: "monad is just monoid in category of endofunctors, what is so hard to understand?"

Jataman606··on Why I built a dictionary app
> To dig on the first: “ Offline support”, this in itself requires a lot of work

What work are you talking about? How is accessing local filesystem more work than calling external API with authorization?

Jataman606··on George Orwell’s 1940 Review of Mein Kampf
> Well, perhaps those social institutions didn't recruit the best, what about sports - if this statement was actually true, we should find best MMA fighters in places where they encounter tought times, like Russia or Somalia. Does that match observation - do they win all the MMA championships or something? It doesn't.

Just look through UFC rankings and you will see that you are wrong. The only reason that you don't see fighters from places like Somalia (because there are plenty from Russia) is that they are too poor to move to place where they would be noticed and recruited, not that they would be bad fighters. Even fighters that came from USA are mostly from tough and poor backgrounds.

Jataman606··on Irwin – the protector of Lichess from all chess players villainous
> That would clearly work for someone who is cheating by letting an engine do all the work, but how about someone who mostly plays the game themselves just using the engine rarely?

Thats exactly what those engines try to detect. If you are average player, but every time you start loosing you get significantly better, then there is great possibility that you are cheating. Thats whats looking through history gives you. It's about actually finding deviations from your usual behaviour.

Jataman606··on The ‘E-Pimps’ of OnlyFans
There are more efficient ways to get blackmail material, especially that FSB doesn't care about random citizens. Also if, for some specific reason, they would need to blackmail specific random citizen, they probably would use more mundane ways (like threatening that they will throw you to jail).
Jataman606··on Show HN: I ranked news websites by speed
Why just accept mediocrity? The slowness of the website has no connection to quality of work that is displayed. So they can be improved separately. It doesn't have to be always choice of bad vs less bad. We should strive for something that is actually good.
Jataman606··on Does the Tank Have a Future?
> that all Russian territorial objectives are likely to be met

Their objective was to overthrow Ukrainian goverment and take half a country. So no, their objectives definietly will not be met.

Jataman606··on Game Design Mimetics (Or, What Happened to Game Design?)
> My understanding is that the new MW2 is a sequel to MW2019 which was itself less a remake and more a reboot

The author may have been confused, because MW2 remaster was actually made. It was released in 2020 and contained only campaign.

Jataman606··on I was forced to be a child star. It was never my dream or my idea
Jimi Hendrix - 15.
Jataman606··on The Xinjiang Police Files
Russia started war in Chechnya (first indirectly by arming opposition, then by literally starting war). Spinning it to say that they tried to win the war to turn Chechnya to peaceful region is very disingenuous.
Jataman606··on I need to find an apartment
Speaking to other people is now harassing?
Jataman606··on Zas Editor
I think parent meant 'profitable' as how much Microsoft profits from it, not if it's good value for money for consumers.
Jataman606··on Cello – High Level C
I'm suprised that there are so many comments advising to not use it, when even FAQ of this library basically says that it's not production ready. It always was just cool project to show off how someone can hack C to it's limits.
Jataman606··on Tell HN: If You Are in Russia
You really think the only reason that Ukraine won the narrative is that no one listens to Russian lies?
Jataman606··on GTA 6 Confirmed
Im sure every company does it differently, but i heard that Valve has repository set up in a way that trunk is latest version of source engine and then they make new branch for each game.
Jataman606··on LÖVR – An open source framework for rapidly building immersive 3D experiences
I don't think problem is with what is easier or harder. It's problem with tools that give you ready solutions, that make it possible to just use cookie-cutter approach without adding anything from yourself. Actually it's not even a problem it's just a consequence. Of course not everyone has time to write everything themselves, but doing that practically ensures that what you make will have unique feeling.

On the other hand, even if you use cookie cutter approach to game mechanics you could make other stuff more unique (like story or universe).

Jataman606··on Replacements for existing software written in Rust
Most of this are not actual rewrites, but "write-a-news", so they are not drop in replacements. Like ripgrep for example: it servers the same task, but is in some ways improvement over "tried and tested" grep.
Jataman606··on Vaccinated Americans now may go without masks in most places, the CDC said
It could be also Poland.
Jataman606··on JerryScript: lightweight JS engine for IoT
It seems that it actually cannot be used for such small systems. README states that this compiles to 160kB. But i agree with your point, unless theres some OS on board, using JS is probably too restricting.
Jataman606··on Nano 5.0
Not really. Only after your comment i realized that it stands for any key at all. I never actually thought what it means before.
Jataman606··on RedHat Mandrel Makes Java Native
Debugging Java is easier than C++ though.
Jataman606··on A gentle introduction to pointers using C (2019)
The point where I actually understood everything about pointers was when i realized that they just hold memory address. After that everything like pointer arithmetic and dereferencing pointers become clear as day.
Jataman606··on Mapping Police Violence
If you would read it you would see that killings have little correlation to violent crimes.
Jataman606··on C++ Pattern Matching Proposal [pdf]
If you call function and it doesnt exist you get a warning "implicit declaration of function". Unless you use additional compiler flags.
Jataman606··on Kotlin vs. Java
Why is variables II better in Java? Its almost the same with advantage on Kotlin side with type inference. Also ternary operator isnt needed in Kotlin since if/else itself can return value, so its just example to show so people dont try to look for it in Kotlin. Overall its not even an article, its just a showcase of differences in syntax and idioms in both languages, i cant fathom how could you be manipulated with that.
