Jarmsy··on A DIY ‘bionic pancreas’ is changing diabetes care
Hypoglycaemia during sleep is the big one. My hypo sensitivity isn't great, but if I'm awake I'll always notice before it gets really dangerous. Sleeping is a different story though. The days when even a slight low would jolt me wide awake in a sweat are gone though, and now I'm much more reliant on sensor alarms to not just sink silently deeper.

One thing I wish I'd been told more about when first diagnosed was the possibility of prolonging the honeymoon period. It was decades ago, and back then the advice was to eat a fairly normal diet and just dose as much insulin as needed.

If I was back in that position I'd go low carb high exercise from the start, and do everything I could to reduce my insulin requirements as much as possible. There are cases of new T1s coming of insulin completely, or just a low basal dose for multiple years.

I'm in the same boat re. MDI over pumping. I can still keep very tight control without a bunch of cumbersome attachments (I do wear a flash sensor though). Why vials and syringe rather than a pen though? I usually just carry the pen in my pocket and phone for monitoring. Even in hot weather I've not had problems with insulin losing potency noticeably before finishing a cartridge.
Jarmsy··on We’re all just temporarily abled
I think most people would count anything not forbidden for Olympic athletes as natty (not that most Olympic athletes actually are, but that's another discussion).
Jarmsy··on We’re all just temporarily abled
About grinding reps, I look to the example of Lasha Talakhadze, arguably the strongest weightlifter ever. Of all the clips I've seen of him training I don't think I've ever once seen him grind a rep. It's always submaximal(though huge by normal standards) weights done at such high speed it looks easy.
Jarmsy··on We’re all just temporarily abled
Oly - The competitive sport of Olympic weightlifting, which has 2 lifts, the snatch (bar from floor to overhead in one explosive movement)and the clean and jerk (from floor to chest height and from there to overhead).

Those who do it tend to just refer to it as weightlifting (one word), but we sometimes say Oly weightlifting when talking to others to avoid confusion with the more general weight lifting/lifting weights, which encompasses powerlifting(another competitive sport consisting of bench press, squat and deadlift), weightlifting and general resistance training.

Weightlifting is more dynamic and requires a lot of skill to control the timing and momentum, whereas powerlifting is closer to a test of raw strength(not that it doesn't require some technique).

Jarmsy··on Nobody ever paid me for code
The whole article is clearly written by someone struggling with English, with no checking or editing. They use 'seldom' in a way that makes no sense, where I guess they meant 'hardly'. Then there's 'hilight' instead of highlight. That's just in the first few lines.
Jarmsy··on Methods for increasing efficiency of solar cells with silicon and perovskite
Isn't this article about a paper published 5 days ago?
Jarmsy··on Apple plans a slow, appointment-only rollout of Vision Pro
It's notable that despite the claimed joint tracking, the only actual hand interaction shown in that video is knocking something over, not any real dextrous handling requiring precise finger motion. I get the impression they made a deliberate decision not to include any 3d handling in the launch demos because it's just not good, whereas 'look and click/swipe' works well.
Jarmsy··on Apple plans a slow, appointment-only rollout of Vision Pro
All I've seen so far suggests they're almost entirely focused on virtual 2d screens floating in 3d space, and not other virtual 3d objects at all.
Jarmsy··on Show HN: Degrees What?
I'd like to see something similar for just the real number line - to scroll and see notable values.
Jarmsy··on Tintin, Hergé and Chang
Who in the English became Cacofonix
Jarmsy··on Tintin, Hergé and Chang
Most of the joke is the same as the original, but the 'mild and bitter' part is an addition by the translators. Here's a blog post on them with a comparison of this and a few other pages https://auntymuriel.com/2012/12/23/asterix-in-translation-th...
Jarmsy··on Tintin, Hergé and Chang
The English translators did a great job. This page always stuck in my head for the wordplay: https://2.bp.blogspot.com/ZRlllWCKGjl9aKUy7F_WhgF4-B9fo74LY9...
Jarmsy··on Mathematicians Have Found a Shape with a Pattern That Never Repeats
So how does starting a meta-meta conversation about that conversation help?
Jarmsy··on Mathematicians Have Found a Shape with a Pattern That Never Repeats
Plenty of mathematics is ugly. Just look at optimal packing. People like to focus on the elegant parts.
Jarmsy··on Mathematicians Have Found a Shape with a Pattern That Never Repeats
Yes, the one with reflections was found months ago, and got a lot of coverage and discussion here. Then the one without reflections was found more recently (and also had a few discussions here). This article is about the first of these, so rather old-hat now, not even old-turtle.
Jarmsy··on Is Coffee Good for You? – James Hoffmann review of scientific literature [video]
He mentioned towards the end of the video that he's got a deep dive on decaffeination coming up soon
Jarmsy··on The History of Coffee (2015)
There's also a big genetic variation in caffeine metabolisation speed between individuals. For some 4 hours before bed might be fine, while for others even 12+ hours before messes up their sleep.
Jarmsy··on Titanic tourist submersible goes missing with search under way
And the author is revealing this only now!? That's not a great look, being witness to massive safety violations and keeping quiet about it until after it goes wrong.
Jarmsy··on UK hobbyist stuns math world with 'amazing' new shapes
Also just to clarify, this is a new development from the one a couple of months ago. The same authors have now described an aperiodic monotile without flips.
Jarmsy··on UK hobbyist stuns math world with 'amazing' new shapes
"While all agreed "the hat" was the first einstein, its mirror image was required one in seven times to ensure that a pattern never repeated."

The article has a small error here - it should say approximately 7. The ratio between the tiles and their mirrors is phi^4.

When the truth was even less dramatic - the events described did not occur in any computer simulation, just a human making up hypothetical scenarios.
Jarmsy··on A chiral aperiodic monotile
There is not. If it tiles a sphere it's not aperiodic.
Jarmsy··on Ask HN: Has anyone switched from a professional job to a more manual one?
Since they mention being on the road, I'm guessing repair/maintenance of coffee machines? I know what you mean though - I remember a time when the coffee machine was broken with a sign on it saying "an engineer is on the way to fix it", which some of the chartered civil engineers in the office found mildly offensive!
Jarmsy··on Spacetop, a radical laptop with no screen
Also note the 53-degree FOV they quote is for the diagonal angle! In all their press releases they're comically cagey about giving actual resolution and angle info for the display, which makes me distrust them.
Jarmsy··on Experiments in Making Cocktail Ice
An even lower equipment option I've had some success with: Just use any food container, such as an ice-cream box or tupperware. Part fill it and put in the freezer with no lid. It will start freezing from the outside in. When it is partly frozen but before it goes cloudy, break a hole in the top of the ice to allow the trapped liquid inside to escape, and put it back in for a few more hours until it is nearly all frozen. This way you can get a big mostly clear block with a cloudy bit in the middle (you can repeat the break and freeze to get it even smaller), which you can cut up and melt off any cloudy bits with warm water.
Jarmsy··on The mysterious dodecahedrons of the Roman Empire
Regular dodecahedra don't tile space, so these wouldn't make much sense as scaffold nodes. For regular space frames with identical nodes, truncated octahedra are more useful.
