Jarmsy··on People are bad at reporting what they eat. That's a problem for dietary research
Hill walks are particularly challenging for me too. I can do rowing or weightlifting with my sugars staying fairly stable or rising if it's really intense, but something about walking steadily up a gentle slope makes it drop massively. There was some interesting research a couple of years back on how exercising the calf muscle is particularly effective at lowering BG, perhaps that has something to do with it https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9404652/

Also when figuring out how much insulin is needed for a given amount of carbs you need to factor in the type of carbs, your individual response to that type of carbs, what fats/protein/fiber you eat with it (fats and fiber tend to slow down the BG rise from carbs, protein can cause a rise when eaten on its own but can also slow down the rise from carbs), what time of day it is (I need around double the amount of insulin for the same food first thing in the morning vs in the afternoon), your mood, what else is in your stomach already, the weather (hot weather can greatly increase insulin sensitivity), your current fitness level, what physical activity you have done over the last day or 2 and what you will do over the coming hours, where on your body you inject, if you are fighting any illness…

It seemed odd to me that the article gave the authors' email addresses but no link to the actual article!
Jarmsy··on Behaviors reveal sophisticated tool use and possible “pranking” among pachyderms
One of favourite examples of this sort of thrill seeking animal behaviour is this gibbon pulling the ears of a young tiger https://youtu.be/SHXo-BpE8T8

This summer I spent an hour watching a pair of magpies harass a fox. The fox was trying to sunbathe, but the magpies kept dive-bombing it, pecking its tail, and landing in front of it then flying away just as the fox went for them, all while making a chattering sound that seemed a lot like laughter. I've heard theories that they do this as revenge for stolen eggs, or to chase foxes away from their nests, but this was in an open patch of ground far from where they nest and it really looked to me that they were just teasing it for fun.
Jarmsy··on Cooking with black plastic is particularly crucial to avoid
There are a lot of old misconceptions around about cast iron seasoning. It's a layer of bioplastic formed by the polymerization when heating a thin layer of oil on the pan to high temperature - It's not about leaving your pan dirty or 'flavored'. You can clean it with regular dish soap just fine, that isn't strong enough to take the layer off.

Jarmsy··on Sort, sweep, and prune: Collision detection algorithms (2023)
Who specifically mentions what? Unless I'm missing something, nether TFA or the comment I replied to specifically mentioned the objects being similar size.
Jarmsy··on Sort, sweep, and prune: Collision detection algorithms (2023)
Isn't spatial hashing most suited to colliding objects of similar sizes, and with similar dimensions in each axis? (So you can match the grid size accordingly) If you've got a mix of very different sizes and shapes, I think sweep and prune can be a better choice

Ah indeed, they've edited it now.
Jarmsy··on How fast can a human possibly run 100 meters?
Aren't the numbers at the start of the article mixed up?

It starts by saying "Other than Bolt, no human has ever run 100 meters in under 9.73 seconds" Then just below there's a table of records showing 3 other runners with sub 9.73 times.

Jarmsy··on Cities need more trees
I'd guess both. Rich places have the money and influence to improve their area, leading to increased property value, in a cycle.

Jarmsy··on The Perfect Voxel Engine (2021)
Some people might use the terms in this sloppy way, but not distinguishing between a field and a discrete grid sampling of that field is incorrect.

Indeed many animated shows that don't look 3d animated have a 3d model somewhere in their pipeline these days. Even if there's not a digital 3d model, there might be a physical model of the main locations in the studio for animators to refer to.

Jarmsy··on The humble brilliance of Italy's moka coffee pot (2018)
I recently switched to induction and got an all steel Alessi 9090, where the top clamps on instead of screwing like most moka pots and am loving it.

You can put it on quickly with one hand with a satisfying click, always perfectly sealed with no need to judge whether over or under tightening. I think the gasket will last longer too, because it doesn't get stray grounds twisted into it while screwing.

The one handed operation also makes it much easier if you do want to preheat or start with hot water in the base.

I love it! Maintaining good steady levels on MDI and interstitial glucose monitoring does indeed sometimes feel like playing flappy bird with massive lag.

Then even within LDL there are different types. One of which there seems to be a strong consensus is bad, and the other (the 'big fluffy' pattern A) there is some debate about whether it's good or bad. Is that right?
