Jansen312··on Why Apple’s iMessage is winning: teens dread the green text bubble
And signal, and wechat (if Chinese frens), and Kakao (if Korean frens), and Line (if Taiwanese), and Viber (Thai, Vietnamese), and FB messenger. Those I know on iphone also rarely using iMessage.
Jansen312··on Marie Kondo and the craze for minimalism (2020)
I find that her book is a bit hard sell or difficult to practice vs what I saw her how she did it on the TV series. Critics need to watch that to understand. Reading and thinking is hard for those critics these days (maybe that is why good journalistic content seems rare these days vs reality TV scriptings).
Jansen312··on Forced to sell chipless ink cartridges, Canon tells customers how to bypass DRM
I go with Epson or Brothers these days. Canon and HP pretty much getting the ban whenever I have the influence or power to affect the procurement: personal, friends or companies. It has been 2 decades. If they are able to do it drm-free they would have done so. People keep on voting them with their wallet to get these kind of anti-competitive behavior. Complain won't work. Laws or congress is a joke for decades now, considering ours have been so dysfunctional. Just ban at the procurements via word of mouth will be way more effective.
Jansen312··on Upwork asking me for a $12.5k refund as the client was using someone else’s card

Jansen312··on Marie Kondo and the craze for minimalism (2020)
It is more like reaching nirvana and enlightenment stage. When you're young probably fire is fascinating until you touch it and got burnt. People who own "everything" and go for minimalism have seen they really don't need those. People who has nothing hasn't realized they they are blessed already (a bit like Alchemist) and decide to embark a long and ardous journey to hoard as much as possible. They end up worry about their "things" and never got to enjoy it. They end up taken so much debt for the junks they acquire from a big eastern country. Is like Tiger Woods, go on satisfying his libido in the process destroy his family as he seek the plessure he lost his happiness. Junks hoarded are exactly like Tiger's sensual escapedes, ephemeral and yet extremely addictive...and destructive.
Jansen312··on Marie Kondo and the craze for minimalism (2020)
Watch her TV series. It is better at illustrating how her principle works in real life. A lot of Americans have hoarding problem. This is relatively an American phenomenon where they own big abode and higher purchasing power than the rest. It is quite good assuming you have and realize hoarding problem. Otherwise, as the saying goes, she can only explain it to you but can't understand for you.
Jansen312··on Kazakh president gives shoot-to-kill order to quell protests
Basically bias. He or she wasn't aware how USA killed Iraqis (literally for fun - search for that video Iraq video leaked) on a cooked up false premise of WMD (Powell basically died bringing that shame to grave). The entire nation collapse. Same goes with Syria, Agfhan, and maybe Iran+Pakistan given a chance. Russia is still rookie compare to that. And yet, they are evil empire that need to get stopped at all cost. The irony is Nazi Germany the now our western allies was defeated by Russians and to some extend accelerated Imperial Japanese surrenders (the majority the history books in western countries got this part very wrong). Putin is doing it wrong. Western countries expect him to level up his brutality otherwise it makes them look bad.
Jansen312··on Airlines deny boarding to passengers from wild Sunwing party flight to Mexico
They need competitions and lots of lawsuit. This is why people needs to find every opportunities to sue. And also individuals working there. They will only response to money...or in this case lost of it. Anything else doesn't matter.

Jansen312··on Facebook collecting people's data even when accounts are deactivated
Probably FB has enough tech and data to recreate a virtual you as NPC in metaverse.
Jansen312··on Facebook collecting people's data even when accounts are deactivated
Doable. But need $. It is restraining order not a lawsuit. It is harrassment basically if they send into your email inbox unwarranted. Same goes with robot calls, and it is hard to stop them not even with congress passing laws to deal with them. At this stage, we just have to ignore it. You might want to opt for text-based emails which wont trigger any html/css feedback to FB knowing you read it (maybe tutanota mail?)
Jansen312··on Unvaccinated workers who lose jobs ineligible for unemployment benefits (Canada)
Vaccinated still can be infected and die from Covid. Most ICUs do have vaccinated there. So having the perception vaccines gives 100% protection is false. You should always keep this in mind as those they opt for no vaccines do weigh this piece of information while those that pro vaccines usually ignore and a lot not aware of it. Also in a world without vaccines, death from Covid is around 4% and at worst under 10% and that is based on denominator with limited testings. Read up on how Singapore overdo testings and you will be very surprised that death rates are well below 1%. Btw, I am pro vaccinations (looking forward for 4th jab booster of booster soon), similar to Elon's thinking. Vaccine is good but forcing people taking it is a no. That is simply too Stalinistic way no matter how much good intentions you have doing that forcing.
Jansen312··on Fentanyl number one cause of death for adults 18-45, recent government data says
COVID deaths aren't perennial. Just look at Spanish flu, polio and smallpox once herd immunities and cure/vaccines available. Covid death is relatively mild if you factor in the effects is at most lasting 3 years (2020-2022). Fentanyl will kill way more than Covid for decades to come...way way more for those young demographics. You can choose to get vaccinated for yourself and your kids. You aren't able to do so with your kids "vaccinated" from Fentanyl. It takes huge parental care and upbringing (like eagle dads and tiger moms) to "vaccinate" from Fentanyl or other hardcore drugs. Majority of Americans won't do that. Nobody denies Covid deaths. People usually discussed on the risks of getting covid AND die vs vaccination AND not dying. Vaccine don't guarantees immunity. Just go ask your doctor friends how many covid deaths are vaccinated. I am 100% sure it is not 0% (from what I read is ~10%). Current situation is people who like to take the risk of getting infected AND dying prefer to have choice not taking vaccines. You can read up Singapore statistic showing a lot infected won't show symptoms ~80% and death due to Covid is way below 1%. Think of it as playing death from extreme games. Is it okay for communities decide to ban extreme games worldwide because dying from it is higher probable than those doing couch potatoes. Young children can get inspired to do so if you are thinking about "infection difference". At this moment, our countries are diverting huge amount of money for combating Covids. We aren't focusing enough on fentanyl deaths. Even Trump put effort on that compare to sleepy Joe and address the source of Fentanyl (big eastern country). Go read ASEAN countries how they deal with drug traffickers and addicts. Their results will put every western countries to shame.
Jansen312··on Indiana life insurance CEO says deaths are up 40% among people ages 18-64
But those died due to illegal drugs won't be elligible for insurance claim. It is strange the article only showing 40% increase in deaths. I would like to see the breakdown. Is it mostly due to heart-related deaths like stroke or cardiac arrest? How many of them has been vaccinated? How many due to natural and unnaturql causes. What I have heard was some deaths due to cardiac arrests in young people. And these are routinely classified as "natural". I like to see numbers backing that. We know vaccine caused heart inflammations and deaths. What we don't see is numbers refuting that and strange for our pharma to wait 75 years to disclose their findings. Do they need to edit the reports that already submitted to FDA?
Jansen312··on Bitcoin's electricity use 8 times higher than Google's and Facebook's combined
Only elite few who can buy GPUs and do mining. Majority of 3rd world can't. Smoke from coal and leaded petrol provides more value than health for those living in 3rd world too. I also don't know why the insistent of going green when not doing so is so much cheaper for the poor.
Jansen312··on Poll: Americans increasingly justifying political violence
It is in the constitution, aka 2nd. Founding fathers already given us the permission to do so and expected sometime down the line, American government will go rogue. If the courts are expected to be scared or corrupted with no standing, Americans have been instructed by our founding fathers to take up arms to rectify domestic enemies. Other countries like Brits and China have no such permissions inscribe in their constitutions hence they are expected to be subservient to their governments whims (e.g. HK).
Jansen312··on Chief Justice Backs Plan to Review Patent Trial Forum-Shopping
If you follow his rulings, a lot are underwhelming for a sitting Chief. You got the time, read his rulings vs Thomas. His ACA ruling was the worst in my opinion using commerce as excuse and completely ignore the main constitution. And in the end ACA collapse itself. Just to show, the judge has no sense what is practical. Then of course his controversial involvement in denying voting fraud cases with no standing or just ignore (aka weak and scared). You either be consistent on liberal say RBG or conservative like Scalia. You just don't be in the middle flip-flopping and weak especially you are a Chief.
Jansen312··on Twitter Permanently Suspends Marjorie Taylor Greene’s Account
Newspaper can be sued. Twitter can't (section 230) because they are a platform that can't choose what to publish. But they now giving Congress the finger by acting like newspaper and still can't be sued. Essentially, new media are given protection while old media constrainted. I favor 230 removed or explicitly nullify if media show they can censor.
Jansen312··on Hong Kong pro-democracy Stand News shuts down after police raid, arrests
You can check with Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, Philipines and other SA countries. I don't see Chile being hostile towards Spanish or Americans. A lot of these countries have in common though. They have different form of government. Perhaps, trying to be peaceful and forgiving would go a long way than trying to be mecha-ultra-vibranium-wolf-eagle?
Jansen312··on Apple gives top engineers bonuses up of $180k to curtail defections to Meta[..]
Everyone has a price....at least I believe that is what Zuck is thinking of. Meta is his goldmine. He needs miners for his Meta goldmine at whatever the price is. If he offer a pay....say worth twice what one can get at Apple, it is worthwhile for some to try their luck in Meta. 10 years wasted in Meta will only be 5 years missing in Apple for example. It still will look good in one resume having been "land developer" or "founding fathers and mothers" in Metaverse.
Jansen312··on Children's Risk of Serious Illness from Covid-19 Is as Low as It Is for the Flu
Same severity as common flu. I got sick from common flu that my kids brought back. The issue here is basically how many percentage you get severe flu vs severe covid. Current covid is significantly milder compare to earlier one just came out from China plus majority has been vaccinated. Current flu is also significantly milder than the one responsible for Spanish or bird flu. Response need to be measured and not a one size fit all. Healthcare (admin side) will love to continue these as they can claim from government. You shouldn't take at face value whatever these healthcare professional is preaching at 100%. You can now go to 10 hospitals and it will be much less severe than if you do so just 9-12mths ago. Even during the height of covid, death rate from covid is around 4% (flu is like undee 0.2%). With 80% almost no symptom. Plus if you actually do extensive test, death rate will be way lower than 4%. Singapore proved that with their exceptionally low death rate due to their exceptional testing (increasing the denominator). My key point here is measured response. At some point we need to get back to normal lives just like the Americans that gone thru Spanish flu, polio and smallpox. The next time people around you talk about how dreadful Omicron is, ask them how many died due to Omicron strain. Ask why healthy infected Omicron is such a serious statistics when people dying or even "maimed" by Omicron is unreported or statistically not "recorded" or "published". Also asked yourself this, flu vaccines have been around for decades and many children did died from common flu, why you and the people you know didn't get flu jab religiously?
Jansen312··on Teaching D from Scratch: Is it a viable first language?
Depend on what is your target audience. If they are beginner comp sci students then D is ok. Preferably something lispy like Racket. If they are more of "learn to code" and get high paying job, D is not recommended. Python, Java/Kotlin, R, C# or C/C++ would be better choices. If you are focusing on embedded students, C is a must and maybe Rust. If you are focusing on web development, then Javascript/Node is a must. Some people would argue that learning any languages is ok as you learn the concept. But this argument is the same as learning Japanese or Korean so you have "upper hand understanding" of Chinese. Why not just go straight learn Chinese than beating around the bush learning something "similar". There are concepts in C/C++ that are hard to replicate in C# or Python such as pointers and low level memory management. Or, data science community on Python platform that are scarce in others. Same with r for statistics, C# for .Net/Microsoft, Java/Kotlin for Android stuff. Most people have limited ability to learn 1 or 2 languages over their lifetime. Just focus on that most useful and accessible. Good one will always go on and create their own languages.
Jansen312··on A super-spreading event of Omicron amongst triple-vaccinated healthcare workers
Mask? Many places mandate that as though as it prevent spreading. So vaccines weren' exclusivity of that.
Jansen312··on A super-spreading event of Omicron amongst triple-vaccinated healthcare workers
Isn't without vaccines the death rate from Covid is around 4%? I read earlier 80% of unvaccinated in 2018-2020 stage, won't even show much symptoms. Singapore even gone thru extensive testing and their death rate was very low well below 1% and this was before availability of vaccines. So reducing the risk of that 4% chunk isn't significant.
Jansen312··on Why Is C Faster Than Java (2009)
Most people talking about C# and Java, they refer mostly to application development. You rarely hear these languages at system programming (doable, just rare). Rust is at C/C++ level when it comes to system programming and eliminates a lot of C/C++ issues and yet added features found in Java and C#, and even Haskell. People just don't know a lot about Rust to criticize upon and yet seeing it mentioned everywhere. I can understand if some feel a bit "fed-up" seeing Rust brought up in a non-Rust thread. But I do agree with you, Rust is very relevant for discussion here.
Jansen312··on Japan to pay companies to keep sensitive patents secret
Basically describe your invention vaguely. Government officials will see the details and decide award it. Nothing detail is published. This is not USA where freedom of information act doesn't apply. Enforcement of patents usually lies in the person or entities holding the patents. So if governments chose not to enforce the "publication" parts, that means it is up to patent holders to do so. For example Tesla open up their patents. Here Japan probably wants to protect their own companies from devalue their own IP and RnD helping copycats achieve similar result without the expenaive research part. Patent is just staking a limited period exclusivity with a requirement to describe publicly exactly how you do it. Remove that "publicly" and "exactly" won't negate the idea of patent. Enforcement might get some difficulties though.
Jansen312··on Finnish Man Blows Up Tesla Car Instead of Replacing Battery
Many pro-green or geeks love Tesla yet don't realize it is overpriced and has huge delayed negative externalities like worn batteries and non-repairable. We already have better alternatives than Tesla for decades...called "Toyota". Cheaper to buy and maintain. Quality is superb. If I want to test drive Tesla, now we know where to rent it.
Jansen312··on Why is U.S. labor supply so low?
Businesses especially the large one get free guarantees, bailouts, low interest rates, preferential treatments, etc. It isn't free for many decades.
Jansen312··on Apache Log4j bug: China’s industry ministry pulls support from Alibaba Cloud
You just look back at China's 5000 years Imperial history. It is no surprise of current development. Chinese history has never had Greek style democracy system. The closest in terms of political development will be Song dynasty which it has a chance to further survive, will likely turn into something like USA. Alas, ask any Chinese scholars, Song dynasty is considered the worst in China as it is "weak". Surprisingly, if you ask the same person, people living during Song dynasty were way better off than Tang or Han dynasty, both golden periods of China before Song. Even if you ask about science and literarure developments, it too was ahead of previous dynasty. Still, it is consider a failure when in terms of dynasty ranking.

I know about Dr. Sun's republic, Taiwan and "voting politburo" . But these are considered modern development which hasn't really sunk into physche of Chinese race worldwide.
