JanNash··on What is going on with ceiling fans
Where is "in" a Klein bottle, I ask!
JanNash··on What is going on with ceiling fans
Please don't encourage them, I fear this idea might take off...
JanNash··on I think you should almost never use AI to write
What zdragnar says :)
JanNash··on I think you should almost never use AI to write
Humans can learn texts by heart, even lots of text (I have some expertise on that, having studied opera singing). They can reproduce these texts accurately, deterministically and repeatably. An LLM is a statistical machine. It does not know any text by heart and it is by pure chance that it sometimes reproduces existing texts verbatim.
JanNash··on DARPA, U.S. Air Force fly AI-controlled F-16
This was likely written sarcastically by the original commenter (throw...). Please termimate sarcasm with /s, not everyone is able to read the subtext. Cheers.
JanNash··on Opus 4.7 knows the real Kelsey
> given benign governance

quite unrealistic imo, thus we (maybe and hopefully) needn't worry about the bland minority report future you're hypothesizing :)

JanNash··on Opus 4.7 knows the real Kelsey
This is depressing, don't you think? :/
JanNash··on The struggle of resizing windows on macOS Tahoe
well said. well, sad. but true ...
JanNash··on Maybe comments should explain 'what' (2017)
Thank you! Taking that refactoring advice at face value when I still was quite junior led to me writing an immensely over-abstracted framework that bit me in the butt for years afterwards when trying to debug or add a new feature. Wasn't easy to unlearn...
JanNash··on Carrier Landing in Top Gun for the NES
Also, of course, the 73 would have to have a hook, which shortens the landing quite some (as well as the lifespan of the fuselage, I assume), as long as you catch the wire, that is. Wingspan-wise, this could also work. @RedBull, how bout it?!
JanNash··on Is Matrix Multiplication Ugly?
Wow, thank you for this gem!!!
JanNash··on Chess.com regional pricing: A case study
Valid inquiry!
JanNash··on A human-accelerated neuron type potentially underlying autism in humans
Disclaimer: I also read it as rude at first glance.

Question: Can you classify what is rude or not for autistic people in general or is it more likely that you might perceive something as not rude which other autistic people might perceive as rude?

JanNash··on I made a public living room and the internet keeps putting weirder stuff in it
your brain is not alone with this wish!
JanNash··on Mullvad Leta
Is it pointless though if e.g. there are no ads?
JanNash··on Minimal Web
This kind of wonderfully civilised and respectful discussion between people who do not see something the same way is why I love hn. Thank you both, have a good Sunday!
JanNash··on 25 years of video clips gone as Paramount axes Comedy Central wesbite
"We" do not talk about musicians stealing chord progressions, at least I do not. There is (in western diatonic music) a quite limited number of chord progressions (that sound "good"/"acceptable" to ears used to this kind of music) Should new music be prohibited from being created once they've been used? Should painters not be allowed to use a certain combination of colors anymore because another artist already used them? As a (studied but now hobby) musician, I think that is utter nonsense, excuse my french...
JanNash··on Show HN: Pākiki Proxy – An intercepting proxy for penetration testing
But do you think “work they did once” holds true for the majority of software that uses subscription based pricing? No updates, no migrations to new OSs, no bugfixing, no support, would you want that? Should people just write perfect software off the bat?
JanNash··on iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus
Hey Sean, really cool you’re here :)
JanNash··on To make dishwashers great again? (2020)
Well, I lick most of my plates clean, our small washer takes 3 and a half hours and everything is cleaned just fine. EU citizen here :)
JanNash··on The past is not true
Well put.

JanNash··on Avoid the Apple App Store
This is infuriating. I've also had my fair bit of trouble with App Store Review but your this really takes the freaking biscuit. C'mon y'all, let's get this post some visibility.
JanNash··on Traffic Simulator
I’ve wanted to play with something like this for ages. Really nice, thx :)
JanNash··on What impossible meant to Richard Feynman
This! Also, tone and general behaviour matters. I think many comments here mistake this beautiful article for advice to use words like this.

I’ve read both his biographic books multiple times, read into the Feynman Lectures and watched many an interview and other stuff with and about him.

If I’d ever gotten to meet him (he’s a top candidate on my “if you could have dinner with any person, living or dead” list) and he’d have called an idea of mine stupid, I’m pretty sure that my reaction wouldn’t have been to be hurt. I would have hoped for him to explain to me why it’s stupid or give me a hint on where to look to find out for myself. Context matters. Character matters.

Don’t call people stupid. Don’t call things (or ideas) stupid unless you can explain what’s stupid about the thing or idea and why.

If you’re passionate about something, try to appreciate when someone tells you, without euphemism, why it won’t work.

If anyone has an idea on how one could get to travel back and meet him, we can find out together why it’s stupid. Or “impossible” :)

JanNash··on Code quality: a concern for businesses, bottom lines, and empathetic programmers
Personally, when I’m writing for fun, I especially try writing quality code. There, I can reason about it, learn it and do it without management breathing down my neck due to business constraints like time and money.
JanNash··on SpaceCadetPinball – Decompilation of 3D Pinball for Windows
Yes, that would be amazing! I absolutely adored playing this game on our first family PC back in the day.
JanNash··on Show HN: Tape It – iOS recording app for musicians
Thanks :)
JanNash··on Show HN: Tape It – iOS recording app for musicians
Hey 82-111-98 (:D).

Thanks a lot for the feedback and for trying our App. We're happy you like it :)

JanNash··on Show HN: Tape It – iOS recording app for musicians
I don't think you missed the reply, it just took me a while :D

If, while recording, the button said "Trying Stereo HD", it should have recorded in Stereo. Thanks for double checking :)
