JamesCoyne··on The Names of All Manner of Hounds: Inventory in a Fifteenth-Century Manuscript
"Abstract: The Names of All Manner of Hounds is a unique list of 1065 names for hunting dogs (running hounds, terriers and greyhounds) found in a fifteenth-century manuscript that has recently been sold into a closed private collection. The present article offers a critical edition of this unusual text, which has never been published before, preceded by an introduction that contextualizes its contents in terms of the hunting culture and the milieu to which they belong. ..."

JamesCoyne··on I was part of a human subject research study without my consent
Going back to study homepage here https://privacystudy.cs.princeton.edu/ there is another update, now from the lead investigator, that includes the following paragraph:

"Second, our team is prioritizing a possible one-time follow-up email to recipients, identifying the academic study and recommending that they disregard the prior email. If that is feasible, and if experts in the email operator community agree with the proposal, we will send the follow-up emails as expeditiously as possible."

Did this study send automated emails in such volume that they can't work out how to send an apology without triggering spam protections? Or did they send email and not record it? What is he saying here?

I guess this counts as novel and non-obvious then:

> One embodiment of the present invention may be a system including a security scanning device through which objects may be passed, having a proximate end and a distal end, a plurality of trays, and a plurality of tray carts adapted to receive the trays, wherein the plurality of trays are provided in a first tray cart at the proximate end of the scanning device, and wherein the trays are adapted to be passed through the scanning device at the proximate end, and wherein the trays are received in a second tray cart after passing through the scanning device at the distal end of the scanning device, and wherein the second cart is adapted to be relocated to the proximate end of the scanning device.

I was curious too. The FBI provides nationwide numbers for 2019: ~268k robberies, of which 16% occurred at a residence, so ~43k. [1]

The National Institute for Mental Health says that ~24k suicides are inflicted with with firearms in 2018. [2]

Hard to figure out how many robberies might have been "resolved" by an armed homeowner, but I note the FBI says that there were only 334 "Justifiable Homicides" by civilians using firearms in 2019. [3]

JamesCoyne··on IBM Port-A-Punch: create punched card documents anywhere
re the brailers: Those are close, but the one I was shown was smaller; truly pocket sized. This was ~20 years ago.

I doubt they are really sold anymore, because a small handheld tape recorder is easier for "notes" if you are blind.

JamesCoyne··on IBM Port-A-Punch: create punched card documents anywhere
I can't seem to find a picture online, but a blind person once showed me a "pocket brailer" that was a sort of sliding stencil that could emboss crude braille on thick stock with a special stylus. It was his equivalent of a notepad.

Maybe stencils were made for the Port-A-Punch to suit different jobs.

JamesCoyne··on IBM Port-A-Punch: create punched card documents anywhere
Cool. I wonder if this was useful in forestry because the punch cards were quite sturdy, compared maybe to a clipboard full of forms, or field notebook.

A little more detail from the cited article: "The personnel of each crew includes a forester, a crew chief and a tallyman" Later: "All records are in code: Mastery of the code is a large part of the preliminary training..."

JamesCoyne··on Schools Should Exclusively Use Free Software (2014)
All the assembly workbenches are external, doesn't count in my mind.

You're right, FreeCAD can handle the basics nicely. I was coming at this with my experience from university, where I don't think FreeCAD is good enough yet.

I want FreeCAD to be better; I financially support the development in a small way.

JamesCoyne··on Schools Should Exclusively Use Free Software (2014)
Does FreeCAD handle constrained assemblies yet? You can't kneecap students while making the argument that their participation will make the tool better for someone else, maybe, in the future.
JamesCoyne··on Schools Should Exclusively Use Free Software (2014)
CAD is a bad place to make this argument. FreeCAD is the closest thing to commercial 3D parametric CAD, and it is still missing some key features. Further, teaching FreeCAD to engineering students would be a detrimental; the engineering profession that students graduate into has no appetite for open source CAD
