HFT allows the Market Makers to have total control over the price. They literally intercept all orders for most institutionally owned stocks in order to manage the allocation/inventory of shares to make sure shares are available to users of the different brokerage services, and in doing so track the value of all of their initial contracts so they can keep the most valuable contracts and only sell those in the money (you don't actually buy shares, you lease contracts that give you the same rights as those shares and if you want the actual shares you have to submit a special request, so the Market Makers are just managing and tracking contracts which they sell each f a certain number of times at a given price before moving on.)
Sounds like these are businesses with aging owners with no succession plans that can also be modernized. They are sustainable and healthy but will run out of steam at some point so they buy them, modernize them, and ultimately sell them back t the employees who will own 80% of the stock after 20 years. Not that uncommon of a business model except the stock ownership part. Typically you see business flippers do this and sell them after 3-5 years, but much like an incubator they leverage the businesses they buy so they also use each others services and lift them all up while keeping the employees employed.
Right there with you. Their focus is on smoke and mirrors, not putting content first. If the first thing I have to do to get to the content is move your interface or big pictures out of the way, you're doing it wrong.
I don't own an Xbox, but do they not have a mute button on the player level? On PlayStation if someone has no inner monologue, annoys me, or whatever, I just mute them or don't friend them so they can't hear me. Problem solved. I sure don't need an authoritarian telling me what I can or cannot say to MY peers, and resent anyone who gets between me and my friends' communication. Of course they have to worry about liability, but a better solution would simply be to age gate the kids so they can't chat and let the adults grow up or use the mute button. And for the record, in my experience it's been the children that do most of the smack talk and use racial or ethnic slurs as a natural part of growing up. I believe that's what the book Antifragile is all about.
Remember the 70s and the energy crisis which spawned the sub-compact car? Can't we just go back to that instead of giant vehicles with an auto loan that is bigger than the mortgages of the 70s? Better gas mileage, traffic moves faster, more parking spaces, AND they are light enough they can handle driving in the snow far better.
Just a side note/addendum, I worked with entertainment lawyers A LOT in the early days of the web on copyrighted images and while they start from a rigorous position what one simply has to do is find out what the guidelines are that alleviate any issues. For example, with an image or a video clip it often only requires explicit attribution (so every image at the bottom must carry the legal/copyright line, and likewise with a video clip) to satisfy the lawyers. They almost never tell you that, though. That's a tip for YouTubers who get copystruck for movie clips. Run the copyright/legal line at the bottom of every clip while they are on screen and you are covered 99% of the time. That's why when you watch the news and they show a clip you see the line at the bottom of the clip. They know what the legal requirements are.
They are indeed making copies in the strictest sense, but the real problem is if the copyright holders don't enforce their copyrights in the strictest sense they can forfeit their copyright. For example, if I let the public use an image copyrighted by me long enough without strict guidelines and I try to take someone to court, the court can say yes well you let the horse out of the barn and now you are trying to put it back in after it's everywhere. The solution is always licensing, and licenses can be free. So IA and the copyright holders instead of playing hard lawyer ball can cooperate; the copyright holder can grant them a free license for works that would otherwise not be getting exposure of make them money which they can revoke at any time should they decide to try and make money off of a work again. They can also provide strict usage guidelines in that license for IA as well as IA's users so it's clear this is meant for a narrow use and using it outside those guidelines can result in legal/financial penalties. To me this is a win-win because it could open the door for companies like Spotify to subsequently license works that gain popularity from exposure for a fee.
Whatever the problem this would appear to solve, it makes more sense to me that router company should simply build in a 256GB web server into every router so people can host their own site. Routers are expensive and what's another $20 on the price? Hell do a deal with WordPress to use their software like the router companies do with VPN software. They already add FTP capabilities for NAS drives.
Fireworks was the best. Not compared to the crazy stuff Photoshop can do these days with 3D models and all that AI wizardry, but unlike Photoshop Fireworks could be used to draw box with a border using it's shape tool like Visio. I would use it to create web layouts for what would become DIVs in web design. And then there's Director, which was pretty powerful at the time they retired it. I think I still have a copy of the final version. Nothing beats that stacked timeline with scriptable frames and how it ultimately made it into Flash (formerly FutureSplash). Those were the days. I think I still have all the digital books for those products.
I have the same issue and often just reconnecting using a different node/city resolves it Annoying as hell, but sometimes the problem is the nodes in the US show as being in EU for some reason.
It's not about KNOWING, it's about CONTROLLING. The concern is they can shut off your ability to make transactions if you don't cooperate with whatever their agenda is at any given moment, like what the truckers in Canada protesting vax mandates experienced.
On this point, forums are about fostering a community. Social media is about sniping comments. Metafilter has the best implementation I thought, which is you subscribe and can't comment for 30 days so it stops reactionary commenting at the outset and then tell people this is about community and when you have a community you watch how the community behaves and assimilate to that.
I still prefer good old fashioned plain HTML. If you want an app, write an app. Keep the web HTML and accessible to author by anyone rather than require one become a programmer of someone's proprietary scripting language.
The way it works is pretty cool, they literally have server based consoles sitting racks as local to the user as possible that load up the games. But Sony only uses it as a solution for supporting old titles on new consoles and to an extent for allowing people to play games on SmartTVs. Pretty cool, but to be honest it's a novelty that wears off fast. Just charge us extra and build the old chips into our consoles or an HDMI stick. In the meantime, the emulated titles work well enough that bootleggers do it better than the Sony engineers.
Children not working is a modern phenomenon in privileged nations. When times get tough and people need to pay bills just to keep food on the table and a roof over their heads, see how fast that changes. And they are about to get tough.
At this rate given the inventory of Fords sitting on lots from 2022 they can't sell because of prices, Ford will be lucky to exist in 2030, especially with the coming global depression.
I disagree. The problem started when people doing the flows and storyboards weren't informed or didn't understand the tech side. When waterfall was detailed plans written by people in the know, it was great, but only as long as the engineers (programmers) actually read the design doc. But they stopped doing that and insisted on making it up themselves as they went instead. Good product developers can establish proper blueprints, but a good product developer needs to understand both what the user does AND what the programmer does. Then they can articulate a vision and proper information architecture and functional specifications that make doing the work as simple as following a blueprint/design document. Meanwhile, Agile has become this bloated mess with dedicated roles for everything that a producer or project manager used to do, and the project manager has been reduced to someone just tracking progress instead of informed architects beholden to programmers who refuse to read the well thought out and planned design doc.
Such a process made sure all the appropriate questions were answered up front most important, what's the actual problem you're trying to solve, not what do you THINK the problem is you're trying to solve. In part I think programmers wanted to be more than just programmers. It's like a construction worker deciding the architect doesn't know what they're doing so they have to be the ones designing the house as they build it. Which may be true if the architect is an artist and not an engineer.
Because work is deadline driven by whoever is paying the teams' salaries. If you can't accurately estimate when you can get it done, you break it down until you can you get replaced by someone who can.
Love my gas stove, won't live without one, and it keeps my home warm in the winter even when the power goes out. Gas is much more cost effective than electric as well. Also lobe my gas water heater for the same reason. Hot baths during blackouts. This whole "gas is bad for the environment" is bunk when fossil fuels are required to generate al that electricity and that doesn't even get to the cost and efficiency of storing it.
