JacobiX··on What Happened to Old School NLP?
The beginning of the article reminds me of the quote : "Every time I fire a linguist, the performance of our speech recognition system goes up." But nowadays statistical NLP systems regularly use syntactic and semantic information as a features in the learning phase.
JacobiX··on Building a Recommendation Engine
Thank you for the post, I just want to add that there is some machine learning approaches that automatically estimate the mark objects. Shameless self-promotion: https://github.com/GHamrouni/Recommender it is a C library for product recommendations/suggestions using collaborative filtering (CF).
JacobiX··on Programming is not math
"Mathematics is a language plus reasoning; it is like a language plus logic. Mathematics is a tool for reasoning."

-- Richard P. Feynman, The Character of Physical Law

Programming and Mathematics are both language + reasoning. So we can't say programming is language thus Programming is not math.

JacobiX··on Where are the African programmers?
Africa is a large heterogeneous continent ... I'm a software developer from north Africa (Tunisia). You can find here some regular white-collar jobs. But the startups scene is nonexistent.
JacobiX··on Show HN: MeTA: A Modern C++ Data Sciences Toolkit
Very interesting. I have developed an NLP library in C++ in the past months. I will try to contribute with some features (A custom MaxEnt classifier and some text summarization algorithms).
JacobiX··on The True Size of Africa - Misleading Maps
This is a consequence of theorem discovered by Gauss: Theorema Egregium http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theorema_Egregium
JacobiX··on Russian Proton Rocket crashes Seconds after Launch
It's worth noting that the combination of Proton-M rocket and the DM-03 booster has previously failed in 2012. This is a relatively new technology compared to the mature Soyuz rocket for example.
JacobiX··on 3d running horse simulation using particles
Firefox had a problem and crashed ... version 24.0a1 (2013-06-10)
JacobiX··on The Linux kernel trumps the moonshot by a few orders of magnitude
Some background: "At its peak, the Apollo program employed 400,000 people and required the support of over 20,000 industrial firms and universities." Sure the Linux kernel is a valuable project but in terms of engineering effort IMHO the comparison isn't fair.
JacobiX··on C++11 breaking changes in const-correctness guarantees
Also if a function doesn't have _ANY_ side effect how can it be thread unsafe ?
JacobiX··on You are dangerously bad at cryptography
Cryptol is a DSL that simplifies the specification of a cryptographic algorithm http://corp.galois.com/cryptol/
JacobiX··on Every odd number greater than five is the sum of three primes
Some popular methods of proofs are non-constructive. For example you can take a look at the probabilistic method used by Paul Erdős and others.
JacobiX··on An open-source fully homomorphic encryption library
Holomorphic encryption is a very interesting concept especially in a cloud setting. One could perform some operations on encrypted client data. But I don't know if it's mature enough.
JacobiX··on Machine Learning Library for C++
Yes I think It is possible to use the library as a standalone process. It will introduce some little overhead. More importantly the code will be harder to debug and maintain.
JacobiX··on Machine Learning Library for C++
Thanks, it's not as complete as Shark. But it is nonetheless very interesting.
JacobiX··on Machine Learning Library for C++
The library supports some very useful algorithms. Both supervised and unsupervised ones. But I can't use it for our commercial non GPL projects.
JacobiX··on Machine Learning and Link Spam: My Brush With Insanity
Hmm, interesting ... but how you calculate the weights ? do you use the KL-divergence method.
JacobiX··on Machine Learning and Link Spam: My Brush With Insanity
Unfortunately the vast majority of scalable SVM implementations are only for non commercial use.
JacobiX··on Machine Learning and Link Spam: My Brush With Insanity
I have used maximum entropy classification for a quite similar task. It achieves better performances than Naive Bayes classifiers. But as the author remarked, the quality of the training set and the selection of features are very important aspects too.
JacobiX··on Chrome Extensions for Heavy Readers
I use mostly iReader, It removes the ads/clutters and displays the article in an easy to read view.
JacobiX··on Locating interesting parts of an image
Very interesting approach thanks, unfortunately we don't have the social features ...
JacobiX··on Locating interesting parts of an image
Yes I'm using a similar method in the first section of the article (information theoretic solution), but I think that reddit is using the entropy of an image instead of the self-information. The self-information yields to better results in our case (empirically). In the latter sections I use different methods.
JacobiX··on My Python Code for the Netflix Prize
Thanks for posting this. Your code combines two successful approachs : a latent factor model (SVD) and a neighborhood model :)

Here's my implementation of a recommender algorithm in C if someone is interested : https://github.com/GHamrouni/Recommender
