Jacob4u2··on Show HN: Worldwide battle of virtual missile attack and evasion
Why doesn't it work on my IPad 2? Don't I have geolocation API on here?
Jacob4u2··on Ask HN: who started something in 2012 that didn't or won't become profitable?
I disagree that the site design is awful. But agree that the spelling and grammar could use a little more attention.
Jacob4u2··on Ask HN: who started something in 2012 that didn't or won't become profitable?
Launched an HTML5 offline app analytics library - http://discolytics.com. Not profitable, but haven't really tried to market it. Was originally developed for another clients project and figured someone else out there had a similar need.

I regret nothing, great learning experience, the whole thing.

Jacob4u2··on My Recent Experience With Square
I don't believe the customer service was polite. They shouldn't scold the person right up front about multiple emails; maybe it's just me, but the customer pays you, they can send as many emails as they want. Also, it's confusing that he is told to respond to the first email (and that it's time sensitive) and yet they do not respond to his prompt reply.
Jacob4u2··on Mobile Web jQuery And HTML5 Frameworks for Web Developers
That's an interesting opinion. How do you feel about the fact that Sencha touch requires the purchase of a license for a commercial app whereas jQuery Mobile does not? IMO that makes jQuery a more attractive choice.

However, I will agree that the article was a bit jQuery heavy; several of the options presented were extensions of jQuery Mobile.

Jacob4u2··on Amber.js (formerly SproutCore 2.0) is now Ember.js (and released)
I can't speak for backbone.js, but this looks a little more verbose than my favorite MVC framework; Knockout.js (http://learn.knockoutjs.com/).
Jacob4u2··on “But The Client Wants IE 6 Support”
You are still creating another site even when using polyfills. The surface area for display bugs in a polyfill is > 0.
Jacob4u2··on Introducing GitHub Enterprise
I'm having a hard time finding comparable Team Foundation Licensing costs for a team of 20. Does anyone have an idea how this compares?
Jacob4u2··on Finally, a Markdown editor for Windows
Any plans on releasing the source? I'm sure there are others who'd love to help with the project.
Jacob4u2··on Facebook introducing HTML5 Resource Center
Their HTML5 showcase site doesn't display properly on IPhone; doesn't sound like someone I want to take advice from.
Jacob4u2··on Asynchronous Programming with Async and Await (C# and Visual Basic)
Even though I started this whole religious war thread, I don't really want to continue with it (but I'm too proud to delete my comment). Here is my rebuttal in a nutshell; VB is not succinct and therefore not a powerful language[1].

Jacob4u2··on Asynchronous Programming with Async and Await (C# and Visual Basic)
Why in the world would someone include the words Visual Basic in the title of a submission to Hacker News? And how in the world does that article get to the front page?
Jacob4u2··on Microsoft Garage releases Mouse Without Borders
I don't think the "Garage" is necessarily a separate unit.

> “The Garage is open to anyone, which means we have people from all over the company working together. The Garage provides support through Garage Weeks, Science Fairs, free hosting, and a worldwide community to help you build things you wouldn’t be able to accomplish on your own,” Hawkins said." - http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/Features/2011/aug11/08-19...

I'll leave the troll bait "'Innovation == not reading widely enough'" statement alone even though I'm severely tempted to waste my time on that.

Jacob4u2··on Erik Meijer: The World According to LINQ
Isn't the general consensus that regexes are hard to maintain and debug? I'm not sure that "structural regexes" are solving the right problem.

I think maybe we're not shooting at the same baskets though (basketball reference, apologies if you're not from US); I'm trying to write software applications, not shell scripts.

Jacob4u2··on Erik Meijer: The World According to LINQ
The example happens to use "munging" text, but I think the GP is trying to make the point that you can't use sed (effectively) to parse, for instance, a collection of database entries from an SQL server in the same way that LINQ would be able to do so.

The tl;dr I got from the article was LINQ is effective at working with sets of data; not just sets of text data from a text file.

Jacob4u2··on Erik Meijer: The World According to LINQ
Thats not exactly apples to apples. The powershell equivalent is probably more comparable.

Also, it all depends on what you value; cryptic one liners definitely will get you geek cred, but working with other people not as smart as you will not be fun when having to explain and maintain code like that.

Of course, you may never have to worry about that.

Jacob4u2··on Chicago Yoga Studio: "Why I won't do a Groupon"
I respect your trying to bring attention to incivility on HN, but in what way is the user anonymous? Their account seems old enough and has plenty karma to make me respect their opinion.

Also, in my case, the GP expressed the same opinion that I had after seeing those comments on the OP.

Jacob4u2··on Design for Software: Typography Part 1
More like over zealous fans of the original author. And, of course, the original author of the post. I believe new accounts don't have up votes though, so I don't think they can "game the system" if you're worried.
Jacob4u2··on Design for Software: Typography Part 1
There is an html5 / OSX widget available at: http://employees.claritycon.com/eklimczak/rhythmandscale/
Jacob4u2··on Bill Gates wants to reinvent the toilet for mankind
Reminds me of a Radiolab podcast about parasites and the improvement of productivity in the deep south as a result of the introduction of outhouses.

http://www.radiolab.org/2009/sep/07/

(it's the part about farmers, not sure about a specific seek to point, sorry it's been a while)

Jacob4u2··on IE10 Platform Preview 2 Released
There is a polyfill out that handles the lack of File API in IE and earlier versions of Safari; http://sandbox.knarly.com/js/dropfiles/.

Also, great list of polyfills available at the Modernizr github repo; https://github.com/Modernizr/Modernizr/wiki/HTML5-Cross-brow... .

Jacob4u2··on Poll: What database does your company use?
Have you tried to do the same thing with MySQL and had success? There's a lot of things in your example that could be causing you grief other than the type of SQL Server you are running; i.e. Network Security, Local Security Configuration (Both machines), User Error (is this something you setup all the time?)
Jacob4u2··on Apparently HN gives you great advice and then 1536 users in 4 hours.
Regarding costs and licensing, have you heard of AppHarbor (http://appharbor.com). It's like Heroku but for .Net, free (at least right now) for small web apps and has SQL Server and MySQL database options.

Also, I've heard mention of BizSpark which kind of defers your costs but I haven't got any hard evidence that it is still a good option for startups.

Jacob4u2··on Reddit: IAmAn Astronaut who has been to space twice
His response to a hopeful Aeronautical Engineer on becoming an Astronaut:

  "Be better than the competition."
Wisdom.
Jacob4u2··on Rands in Repose: A Hard Thing is Done by Figuring Out How to Start
I sometimes have a hard time justifying how much time I spend on HN, but this quote about creativity really put it in perspective for me:

"A current favorite is Hacker News. Look, someone is describing how they did the effects for Tron Legacy. They really did go out of their way to make those Unix screens authentic. You know, I have an article about the beauty of the command line. I should write…"
I definitely consider it less of a side-track considering the blog posts and side projects that have been inspired by HN.
Jacob4u2··on Michigan left
Flash animation showing examples of East to North and North to West turns - http://www.michigan.gov/documents/mdot/MDOT_Roads-Travel_mic...
Jacob4u2··on The iPad is the new IE6
I agree. This seems more like a "rage quit" post than a reasonable/rational response to the challenges of multi-platform development.
Jacob4u2··on Oops: No copied Java code or weapons of mass destruction found in Android
Florian continues to comment on the post, posts this link for confirmation of the source files still being in Android source
