Jabihjo··on Show HN: Repogen – a static site generator for package repositories
Really cool! Any chance this could support docker images? I'm thinking of this if it could be a sort of artifactory replacement.
Jabihjo··on If You're So Smart, Why Are You So Poor?
I was hoping this would end on a lighter note which gives some credit (praise?) to those who don't strive for wealth/ money. Alas, this is not the case. Or did I misinterpret what the author is trying to say? Edit: just read another comment which validates what I was thinking: > This wasn't worth reading. It is basically a giant wall of text, potentially AI generated, drawing comparisons that aren't important nor do they get to the call to action.
Jabihjo··on By default, Signal doesn't recall
> Don't say Thunderbird.

Thunderbird. Seriously though, why do people hate on it so much? I use it on all of my non-mobile devices and the latest version out of the box (at least for Linux desktops) is really sleek.

My only issue is Google Calendar integration, and that's only because auto-generated calendar entries suck and cannot be dismissed. When those events pop up, I just click on the link in the notification which takes me to the email and calendar view, and I delete the auto-gemerated event on the Gmail website.

Jabihjo··on Compiling Java into native binaries with Graal and Mill
What's your issue with Golang? (Not hating, just curious)
Jabihjo··on Meta's gamble on chatbots opens new wave of tech competition
I feel validated by your comment. When I first read about the Metaverse, I thought to myself that Zuckerberg saw that movie and wanted to build it in real life.
Jabihjo··on Health insurers can't rely on AI to decide Medicare coverage
> The agency defined AI as "a machine-based system that can, for a given set of human-defined objectives, make predictions, recommendations, or decisions influencing real or virtual environments," and warns insurers against using an "algorithm that determines coverage based on a larger data set, instead of the individual patient's medical history, the physician’s recommendations, or clinical notes."

this seems reasonable. my initial thought was that insurers already use statistical models to determine profitability, so this ban on "AI" (aka large statistical model) could potentially undermine the fundamental groundwork of an insurance company, but it sounds like we're just disallowing the use of a recommendation system. I feel that this is a reasonable thing to do across domains, at least for now, since I believe that most humans don't understand how "AI" works, and might forget to use their own (better) judgment for a decision.

Jabihjo··on Replacing Engineering Managers with AI Agents
Not OP, but I would say yes. And I would argue that humans behave similarly, except that we have an innate sense to question the status quo. For some of us, this trait is more prominent, whereas somebody who is more comfortable with the status quo will usually be stamped a conservative.
Jabihjo··on ASUS to manufacture and sell Intel’s NUC products
I'm looking forward to this! A couple of years ago, I had decided to upgrade my self hosted solutions after running two NUCs non-stop that are almost ten years old (and still running!). Unfortunately, I decided to go cheap with the upgrade and I bought two Minisforum computers, and one of them decided to crap out after just 6 months. No word from support yet. I want to believe that I would have gotten much better support from Intel, if anything would have happened. Also, in general, the NUCs have been more stable with seemingly mundane "features" like sleeping. I know these are just two data points, but I felt validated reading some of the other comments on the HN post from the other day where Intel announced discontinuing the NUC and where people were praising Intel for Linux support and whatnot.

I'm slowly starting to accept that I shouldn't skimp on things that I want to be robust.

Jabihjo··on Astronomers capture moment distant planet was swallowed by star
What happens when Uranus gets swallowed by a black hole?

It gets stretched, elongated, and eventually disappears into the black hole, leaving behind nothing but a trail of gas.

Jabihjo··on Chocolate: Open-Source Media Manager
looks like chocolate supports ROMs
Jabihjo··on How to tell if AI threatens YOUR job
Reading these is kind of a mind fuck for me, knowing that it's generated text. However, the texts are not incredibly insightful and remind me of high school prose, which consisted of a lot of BS and "diarrhea of the pen."
Jabihjo··on Ask HN: Running prod without cloud? What's your setup?
I hope I understood the question correctly:

Production is Argo+Helm+Kubernetes+public cloud provider

Development is bash+docker compose+local computer or remote docker host

Jabihjo··on Trains, trucks, and supply chains
It sounds like you're a libertarian until you're negatively affected by your environment. I'm sorry that I'm attacking you right now with words, but I know a few "libertarians" in real life, and they all appear to be opportunists (read: selfish).
Jabihjo··on New Mexico voted a child care guarantee into its constitution
I'm still appalled at how expensive it is to raise a child here. I was paying close to 3k/ month for toddler care, which is almost half of my net salary. I made 170k last year, which is well above the national average, yet I was living paycheck to paycheck, and I don't live a lavish life; no car, no student loan, no mortgage, I don't pay rent because I married into a home. I can't fathom how somebody making the national average survives.
Jabihjo··on Firefox private mode blocked by T-Mobile
Fuck T-mobile. I have stopped using plenty of sites that break under certain conditions, such as private mode or when blocking third party cookies. I guess it's a little more difficult to not use the T-mobile website if you're one of their customers though.
Jabihjo··on Volvo is using Rust for its in-vehicle software

Jabihjo··on A substantial stratospheric cooling event is now being observed
I wonder how much events like this volcanic eruption cover up the fact that we're so effed in terms of global warming. It's still mind-boggling how much more atmospheric CO2 there is now compared to the lowest points in the last million years (~2x).
Jabihjo··on Plop Boot Managers
I still go and repair computers for people who have older systems, and there are plenty of these still around. Many people either don't want changes (usually older people), or they can't afford newer systems.
Jabihjo··on DRY is an over-rated programming principle?
Unfortunately the issue of lacking a single point of truth is exacerbated the more people who work on a project. I believe the issue in spreading around logic comes from not knowing the original intention, and asking the original authors is, IMO, the best way to fix something or add new features. Obviously knowing the original authors is not always possible, so I try to follow existing patterns.

your page is being flagged as suspicious in my browser. I used a search engine and came across this instead: https://vancedapp.com/
Jabihjo··on Jailer: A tool for database subsetting, schema and data browsing
Yes, ES is a search engine, but under the hood it's really just a non-relational DB with Lucene on top of it. I guess what I would love to see is being able to see a visual representation of the relation between different fields. (Since ES is not relational, you obviously have to define these relations yourself). There are, for example, a aggregation functions at your disposal (https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/elasticsearch/reference/curr...) ES offers a tool called Kibana that lets you run these functions on top of your data (and even visualize it), but I never actually liked it because it's pretty cumbersome.
Jabihjo··on Jailer: A tool for database subsetting, schema and data browsing
I'm definitely trying this one out! Looks very intriguing from the screenshots.

It seems that you're targeting _R_DBMSs, but is there any chance that ElasticSearch is supported?

Jabihjo··on A Plant That Sterilizes Medical Equipment Spews Cancer-Causing Pollution
Ahh. A chemical plant. I was picturing a chlorophyll-filled organism.
Jabihjo··on IKEA customers and staff sleep in store after snowstorm
That actually sounds like fun. I'd much rather be forced to spend the night at IKEA than many other stores.
