JabavuAdams··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (December 2025)
Fantastic! I'll be sending in an application ASAP. I think I would have been a good fit for the AI role, but I no longer see it on the jobs page.

I'm actually quite excited about the Math and CS Producer roles, and I see that you'd like examples of existing online interactive teaching work. I can supply shots of static boards I've used for IRL teaching, but I don't currently have interactive work to showcase. I was thinking of applying immediately, but spending the next week making an interactive demo. Would this work, or should I wait to apply until I have everything in place? I don't want to miss out on this opportunity.

Hi Jared,

Are you guys able to work with Canadian developers in the NYC timezone, either as independent contractors, or as employees through an Employer of Record (EOR) like Deel? I'd love to get back into education, and I'd bring AI, gamedev, and teaching chops.

JabavuAdams··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (November 2025)
This looks interesting! Are you able to work with remote developers in Canada? Either as an independent contractor, or through a payroll company like Deel?

This is really great! Nice work, and thanks for sharing.
JabavuAdams··on Memary: Open-Source Longterm Memory for Autonomous Agents
Looks cool. This is similar to what I'm doing for long-term memory in AISH, but packaged up nicely. Others have pointed out that they're somewhat abusing the term KG. But ... you could imagine other processes poring over the "raw" text chunks and building up a true KG from that.
JabavuAdams··on I rewired my brain to become fluent in math (2014)
Possibly true, but "good enough" is within reach of many more people than realize it. Engineering level calculus is not particularly high-level math, but will get you a long way in terms of applications.
JabavuAdams··on I rewired my brain to become fluent in math (2014)
What did you think of this article?
JabavuAdams··on I rewired my brain to become fluent in math (2014)
Yeah, I had the same realization. Loved that course.
JabavuAdams··on Daniel Dennett has died
Wow, not that old.
JabavuAdams··on Are we at peak vector database?
Why would you need a vector database when your system response time is dominated by calls to off-prem LLMs? Linear search through flat-file of embeddings. Done.
JabavuAdams··on RAG to Riches
I mean, I applied to SourceGraph for a Machine Learning Engineer role on Thursday, and all they gave me was a rejection, on Friday. Where's mah boat? Also, I have this awesome (aspirational) assistant / agent / coding helper thing that's open source and even has some comments so ... can I have a job?
JabavuAdams··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (December 2023)
Are you not going to send it, if they say no? Go for it!
JabavuAdams··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (December 2023)
Hi, it's neat that you're using Lisp. Can you clarify the remote requirements a bit please? I'm not sure I understand this:

""" Work remotely but willing to travel to Seoul every two months for 6 ~ 8 weeks, or perhaps more often/a bit longer (once the COVID pandemic is under control) """

Location: Toronto/GTA, Ontario, Canada

Remote: YES (Canadian + German dual citizenship)

Willing to relocate: No

Technologies: LLM/FM, Machine Learning, Python, TypeScript, Unity/C#, C++, Objective-C, mobile, VR, video games, physics, biology, computer engineering.

Résumé/CV: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jabaadams/, PDF available on request.

Email: jaba.adams+hnhire@gmail.com

I've been deep into using and developing on top of LLMs for the past year. Learned Typescript / Node. Previous daily go-to was Python. Before that, Unity/C# and C++. Helped ship https://ollie.ai . Side-projects include AISH3 LLM / notes playground (https://github.com/jawa0/aish3), building a personal assistant robot (C++ video streaming). Have done research in an ML + neuroscience lab (http://www.jzlab.org/). Shipped multiple hit mobile games, in the past.

Looking for Machine Learning Engineer roles, Senior Developer roles, back-end developer roles, and data analysis roles. Would be super down to work on programming assistants, embodied assistants, spatial computing, etc. The game-development, tool programming, and teaching experience mean I have skills overlap with design and product management.

What about Canada?
JabavuAdams··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (December 2023)
Really, really only US citizens, or Canadians too? Is this an ITAR concern?
JabavuAdams··on Anduril announces Roadrunner, jet-powered VTOL drone
It's more about budget and eye, though. A skilled CG industry veteran with no time or $$$ budget and a deep immersion in in say r/combatfootage and physics could probably make something that would pass for real. It's just that all of those talents and circumstances don't really come together. Hmmm.
JabavuAdams··on Anduril announces Roadrunner, jet-powered VTOL drone
They have lawyers to vet releases, no doubt? I don't think this is Palmer live-tweeting from the toilet stall.
JabavuAdams··on Anduril announces Roadrunner, jet-powered VTOL drone
The war of the machines will look more like the Bhopal disaster, and less like a war.

Of course, maybe we're already post-singularity. My memory of the before-times is pretty hazy and confused. "Reality" seems more and more like a camp Paul Verhoeven satire of reality.

JabavuAdams··on Anduril announces Roadrunner, jet-powered VTOL drone
I mean, so far. Then one day, line go up.

Military-industrial complex boner, and deep shame at the ethical and moral "development" of our species. Another day on the Chimpan-spheroid.
JabavuAdams··on Llamafile lets you distribute and run LLMs with a single file
LLMs are known to be bad at counting. It would be interesting to see the answer to "List the planets in our solar system, starting with the closest to the sun, and proceeding to farther and farther ones."

Also, the knowledge can be kind of siloed. You often have to come at it in weird ways. Also, they are not fact-bases. They are next-token-predictors, with extra stuff on top. So if people on the internet often get the answer wrong, so will the model.

JabavuAdams··on Before OpenAI, Sam Altman was fired from Y Combinator by his mentor
The reason is that SV works on connections, and people are afraid that they won't get their next round or that sweet job if they rock the boat. Also, we're mostly all dudes, so therefore more vulnerable to false allegations on this topic. Also some overlap with culture-wars and pushback against the perceived excesses of the MeToo movement.

Hypothetically, if a little girl were molested by her older brothers, how should she proceed in order to satisfy your sensibilities?

JabavuAdams··on Before OpenAI, Sam Altman was fired from Y Combinator by his mentor
It's unpleasant, but it's not pointless. We've just had days of uninformed and uninvolved randos micro-analysing all things Altman, and pushing various wild speculations. This is seen as okay as long as it's confined to what is essentially office intrigue and gossip. But on the much more consequential topic of potential childhood sexual misdeeds -- nothing.

We don't know whether there's any means of verifying the story until people actually put some effort into verifying the story. Also, it's not unprovable. Perhaps in a mathematical sense, but that's not even required in a courtroom.

Consider all that's been written about Altman's character, using such weak signals as "this former co-worker said this about him". Meanwhile there's this disturbing piece of information that could be a strong signal that is completely ignored.

Have you spoken to anyone in your life who has been molested, or abused? It really cuts through the abstract arguments and illustrates that this dynamic is how abusers get away with it.

JabavuAdams··on Before OpenAI, Sam Altman was fired from Y Combinator by his mentor
I feel the same way about Annie Altman's allegations. Those were out there, but somehow I wasn't aware of them, and I see almost no one discussing them. I mean, I understand why, but it's still disheartening.

JabavuAdams··on Show HN: Ollie – AI powered gift recommendations
ShowHN: Ollie - AI powered gift recommendations

Hi HN!

I'm Jaba, employee #1 (or 2?) at Confabulation Corporation. We're building Ollie - an AI-powered shopping assistant who works for you. We've been at it for about 3 months, and today we're launching our v0: gift recommendations. Would love for you to try it out and give feedback, thanks!

The company was spun out of the Allen Institute's AI2 incubator. Bill Lennon, one of our founders was an Entrepreneur in Residence there. Our other co-founders are Matt Busigin, and Max Fergus.

Having gone back to school as a mature student to study Biophysics, I put out some low-key feelers for a summer job. Matt (who I'd worked with before) convinced me to drop out of school (again!) and "come do crazy things" with him. He reached out to me on a Thursday, I talked to Bill on Friday, and by Sunday I was all in. Then I met Max, on Monday. All in squared.

It's still early days, but we're finding that the ideation and gift suggestions are already useful. How does it work for you?

Thanks for having a look!

JabavuAdams··on SVB shows that there are few libertarians in a financial foxhole
It hasn't aged well in some other ways. I was a die-hard Tolkien fan from an early age -- I think I read LotR at around age 10 or so. But ... it's kind of hard to read to your beautiful brown daughter when you constantly have to stop and do teaching moments because Tolkien goes on and on about how fair and beautiful all the good guys are, and how swarthy etc. the nasty Southrons are.
