JTyQZSnP3cQGa8B··on When AI promises speed but delivers debugging hell
> AI is a tool like any other. Autocomplete on steroids

No, AI is a shitty tool that has yet to prove its utility. Autocomplete works by analyzing the official API and interface, it's completely different than AI which hallucinates meaning between words and also stuff that it was fed before it met you.

> variable names (a hard part of computer science)

Naming is for software engineering, not CS. One more confusion by people who want to sell us AI at all cost.

JTyQZSnP3cQGa8B··on AI slop, suspicion, and writing back
As a shitposter who generates web junk for finance and marketing, you should be more compassionate towards those NPCs as you may well be the worst of them all.
JTyQZSnP3cQGa8B··on AI slop, suspicion, and writing back
> what if the writer just isn’t a native speaker of your language [...] evaluate based on content

Evaluate as in "monetize" everything and that's how we ended up in this commercialized internet. The old web was about diversity and meeting new people all over the world. I don't care about grammar mistakes, it makes us human.

It's comforting to see that this text was not generated by ChatGPT ;)

JTyQZSnP3cQGa8B··on Ask HN: Anyone else find LLM related posts causing them to lose interest in HN
> The only difference LLMs have with the others is the learning curve

Half the post about AI are telling us how good prompts should make me a 10x engineer, or I made this app in 5 minutes and I don't know how to code. At least for JS and, god forbid, crypto, there was some effort required.

JTyQZSnP3cQGa8B··on Ask HN: Anyone else find LLM related posts causing them to lose interest in HN
> Here is a cool SaaS

I think it's the most annoying one. We are spammed by Bootstrap/Tailwind-styled closed-source wrappers around the API currently hyped (with Google login, and pricing page, all the time).

We would be legitimately angry if we were flooded with "Here is some random ClosedSource.exe application, run it on your computer" because that would not improve anything, but for some reason web sites are OK.

JTyQZSnP3cQGa8B··on Can't delete my ChatGPT account

That's unfortunate but so expected.

JTyQZSnP3cQGa8B··on Gongzilla: The collapsing cost of dumb ideas
I don't quite understand but it's the worst way to create anything. Actually there is no creation at all, and you can't change it unless by trying another prompt so that the AI will create it for you. There are literally a billion Flash games and abandonware that are better than this.

> I didn’t write a single line of code, and the entire process took less than an hour and about 20 iterations.

If you want to discover something, do the tiniest activity and learn how to display a sprite in TIC-80, it's the "atom" of writing a game. If you don't want to do this, admit that you don't want to do anything and buy a Switch or a PlayStation.

I would never say "I learned to play the violin by buying an audio-CD," or "I wrote the next Metroid game in less than one hour, all I had to do was ask for Nintendo to generate it for me and I gave them my credit card number."

JTyQZSnP3cQGa8B··on Gongzilla: The collapsing cost of dumb ideas
Why not learn something useful like Love2D or Tic-80?

Using AI feels like a waste of time here and you haven’t learned anything that you could reuse in the future. Might as well play a real video game.

I know but I'm still not happy about it. Also Hugo is not what I would call a WYSIWYG application like Wordpress, so...

JTyQZSnP3cQGa8B··on Show HN: I made a service to convert WordPress blogs to Hugo
Good. But I do wonder why we're flooded with "services" like that when a simple open-source Python script could do this. $150 FFS. I hope you have clients but the open-source dev inside me is dying a bit.

Edit: 413 Request Entity Too Large.

JTyQZSnP3cQGa8B··on Show HN: NotepadJs – A cross-platform love letter to Notepad
> does it match the “cross-platform” description

Yes, it's a plain-text editor too. The files are compatible with the Commodore 64 if you need.

> not yet supported in Firefox ... implies offline support ...

It implies a lot more stuff than all the other pre-installed plain-text editors on every other OS.

JTyQZSnP3cQGa8B··on PyVista
And the official Python API (https://docs.vtk.org/en/latest/api/python.html) which is closer to the C++ version, and may be better for learning if you have the desire to move to that C++ version later.

Anyway, don't forget to use uv (https://docs.astral.sh/uv/) because it's nice. Have fun.

JTyQZSnP3cQGa8B··on Show HN: NotepadJs – A cross-platform love letter to Notepad
What's wrong with TextEdit on macOS?

It's good that you made an alternative but it's not serious. I need to run Firefox, enable JS, reload the page, there is no "top menu" or install button, the open/save button does nothing, I can't choose my own fonts, and I guess it doesn't work if I don't have an internet connection.

Do they have models that try to downplay what happened on Tiananmen Square? That would be a sneaky way to shape our future in some way (and no whataboutism, we do it too).

JTyQZSnP3cQGa8B··on Canon wants us to pay for using our own camera as a webcam
In France it’s called the SACEM and I know a few bands that are affiliated to this association because it’s pretty much mandatory if you want to sell anything.

Those bands are not famous but despite making sales, they only get a few bucks every year, or it’s the SACEM saying "we forgot to send you the check lol, no biggies." It’s the biggest legal mafia I can think of right now.

Most of the money collected is sent to huge artists (like what Spotify is doing), there is nothing indie about it even if they pretend it’s for the glory of French music.

JTyQZSnP3cQGa8B··on Canon wants us to pay for using our own camera as a webcam
> This levy is not meant for piracy, but for legal access

Backups are already legal in France. It’s pure greed. Why should we pay twice? Also this levy goes to major labels, why should I fund the local Taylor Swift if I want to backup my computer?

> blank media

But we still pay that levy on blank media, phones, tablets, computers, hard drives, and USB keys. They even wanted to put that tax on refurbished items.

> the alternative is that you are not allowed

But it was already legal for the past 50 years. They added this tax, it’s not a gift for us, it’s yet another restriction on what was previously legal.

JTyQZSnP3cQGa8B··on Canon wants us to pay for using our own camera as a webcam
Same in France where the money goes to the local RIAA. Even if it’s a hard drive meant for Linux, or to store public domain stuff. It’s basically a mafia that gets our money despite copying for backup purposes being completely legal.

JTyQZSnP3cQGa8B··on Oh Shit, Git?
I agree, I have used git for more than 10 years and it's the only tool that I refuse to learn. The command-line interface is cryptic and infuriating. I'd rather write assembly language again than learn what is essentially a CLI to the internals of git. It's not high-level, it's not intuitive, and it can be destructive if you don't use the right option. I stick to GUIs and simple actions, and I never had any problems compared to all the horror stories of my CLI-loving coworkers.
