JSavageOne··on Omegle 2009-2023
Yes but coercion implies a threat.

If the guy was in another country, it's hard for me to imagine how she became a "digital sex slave" (how the article refers it) instead of just blocking the guy. Naturally I'd imagine there was some kind of blackmail for her to comply, but the article doesn't mention anything like that.

JSavageOne··on Omegle 2009-2023
Asking for an explanation as to which part made it "coercion" means I "need a playbook for the sexual exploitation of children?" Wtf kind of leap of logic is that? The article didn't provide any explanation as to how it was coercion, hence the question, which you never answered.

So if I'm reading an article about a crime case and the article lacks details, that means I'm "looking for a playbook to commit that crime?" Give me a break.

Maybe you're a pedophile trying to hide your playbook for sexual exploitation of children? See how easy it is to make insulting, baseless accusations?

JSavageOne··on Omegle 2009-2023
Punishing minors for "distributing child pornography" over content of themselves sent in private is completely outrageous. Had you not linked those sources there's no way I'd believe our justice system would be so absurdly inept.
JSavageOne··on Omegle 2009-2023
Well that's the question I'm asking, and you didn't answer the question

> coerce - persuade (an unwilling person) to do something by using force or threats.

What was the threat? Why did she oblige? Why didn't she just block him?

JSavageOne··on Omegle 2009-2023
It's horrible that this happened and obviously I'm glad the pedophile is in jail, but how exactly was she "coerced"? And how is any of this Omegle's fault?
JSavageOne··on Ask HN: Making a better world, how important is that to you?
It's important but at the end of the day our capitalist system requires me to find a way to convince somebody to give me their money in order to survive
JSavageOne··on The death of a public intellectual
Anybody can pick a few random quotes out of context and dispute them. Keep in mind I'm not actually defending Peterson's views (I agree with some, disagree with others), I'm defending his status as a public intellectual.

My experience and history shows that women definitely tend to be more attracted to men who are competent and powerful. There is nothing misogynist about that statement. That statement does not imply that all women are the same, it's a description of a pattern that has a semblance of truth.

JSavageOne··on The death of a public intellectual
You realize Peterson was famous well before that 18 month drug addiction, correct?
JSavageOne··on The death of a public intellectual
Amazing, you've managed to meaningfully discredit thousands of hours of content and a couple books in a couple flippant sentences /s
JSavageOne··on The death of a public intellectual
He was addicted for 18 months, but he was famous well before this. In any case none of this has any relevance to his status as a public intellectual.
JSavageOne··on The death of a public intellectual
Even if you disagree with him Jordan Peterson is absolutely a public intellectual. Anyone who has been so publicly outspoken with such an enormous following and made a dent in the universe is absolutely a public intellectual. Just because you disagree with his views (none of which you've disputed in your vague criticism) doesn't dispute that.
JSavageOne··on The death of a public intellectual
If you were publicly outspoken on all of your views across all facets of life (eg. controversial topics, personal topics like relationships) with thousands of hours of content online, there would be plenty of people who strongly disagree with you and to use your words "dislike" you. The other way that's not possible is if you're not actually taking a stance on anything.
JSavageOne··on The death of a public intellectual
Nothing you just said disputes any of what Peterson has said. The fact that you mention him being a "drug addict" (he was briefly addicted to anti-depressants after his wife got cancer) and then use words like "whining" to try to discredit him without actually addressing or disputing anything he's said shows you just have an axe to grind with no substance.

> Stack Overflow serves all the traffic with only 9 on-premise web servers, and it’s on monolith! It has its own servers and does not run on the cloud. This is contrary to all our popular beliefs these days.

Love this part. I wonder how much of the complexity of microservices and various cloud services are actually adding value on a net basis vs. resume-driven development of some bored backend engineer.

JSavageOne··on I think GCP is better than AWS (2020)
Yes Google Cloud Run is my go-to for all my side projects, and AWS doesn't have anything equivalent. Never saw any reason to use AWS for that reason as Google has everything else I'd need. And if I just want a cheap VPS, would prefer to use something cheaper like Linode or Digital Ocean.
JSavageOne··on The world is designed against the elderly, writes Don Norman
As I load this article on mobile a video pops up taking up half my screen with no obvious way to get rid of it, how ironic.
JSavageOne··on Ask HN: Show me your half baked project
https://mindgarden.app/

Offline WYSIWYG markdown editor + publishing tool with a Notion-like UI.

You can load a local folder from your computer by clicking the "open folder" button on the splash screen. There you can create and edit new files on your machine (all from your web browser, or install as a PWA)

The publishing feature enables you to publish a folder as an API (eg. all the data from https://codefire.dev/ is served by an API I created with mindgarden. I also use MindGarden for my blog on my personal site). Admittedly the UX to do this is not straightforward yet, I'll have to improve that and/or make a video demonstrating how to do it.

Ctrl+Shift+P opens up a go-to menu to easy navigate to any file, and Ctrl+Shift+L toggles dark mode.

Definitely half-baked and needs a lot of polish (eg. not designed for mobile yet). Let me know what you think though. May or may not motivate me to actually finish this damn project.

JSavageOne··on People are happier in a walkable neighborhood: the US community that banned cars
I'm a huge fan of walkable cities (generally the norm outside the U.S) but the article doesn't actually any good pictures of the neighborhood, and the few pictures look terrible.
JSavageOne··on Crypto Fooled Us Once. It Will Fool Us Again
People buy many things that aren't legal tender - money market funds, bonds, stocks, gold, etc.
JSavageOne··on Crypto Fooled Us Once. It Will Fool Us Again
Ethereum is decentralized and Vitalik has no direct authority over the protocol

It's funny because HN was initially supportive of Bitcoin when it first came out, but ever since it became popular has been vehemently against it.

It's like the reverse of that famous HN post when Dropbox was announced and the top comment was that this probably won't work: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=8863

JSavageOne··on Crypto Fooled Us Once. It Will Fool Us Again
> It's scam in that you're being enticed to mislead yourself.

That doesn't even make sense.

> Most children understand that "monopoly money" isn't real "legal tender" --- but you don't?

No one is claiming that cryptocurrencies are legal tender (outside of countries like El Salvador that made it so)

JSavageOne··on Crypto Fooled Us Once. It Will Fool Us Again
Someone not understanding what they're buying when the information is all publicly available doesn't make it a scam. Again, a scam implies someone being "misled". If you buy some ecstasy and its laced with fentanyl, you were scammed (to say the least). If you buy ecstasy and you get ecstasy, you were not scammed as you got exactly what you asked for.

> The system has demonstrated multiple times that all the "ownership is truly yours" rhetoric is thrown out the window

In ethereum that only happened once back in 2016 when the DAO was hacked. In any case you're free to use Ethereum Classic.

Anyways you listed some legitimate concerns of cryptocurrencies, but none of them imply that crypto is a scam. Nobody is forced to use crypto, and anyone purchasing crypto should obviously do their own research and evaluate whether it makes sense for them. Crypto has legitimate use cases (eg. for people in countries with oppressive currency regimes) and many find it work the risks.

JSavageOne··on Crypto Fooled Us Once. It Will Fool Us Again
The future is layer 2s.

Other blockchains that advertise smaller fees and faster transaction times all sacrifice on decentralization and/or security, and would not retain those advantages if their usage was at the same scale as ethereum.

JSavageOne··on Crypto Fooled Us Once. It Will Fool Us Again
Bitcoin uses about 100x more energy than ethereum, has 5x less throughput, and doesn't natively support smart contracts. There's definitely also room for ethereum.
JSavageOne··on Crypto Fooled Us Once. It Will Fool Us Again
Much much easier to ban a physical item like gold than crypto. Trying to ban crypto is like trying to ban p2p file sharing, except with much more serious implications as it would also kill a country's presence and innovation in the industry.
JSavageOne··on Crypto Fooled Us Once. It Will Fool Us Again
How is it a scam if the people buying it know exactly what they're buying, and the code is all open source? The word "scam" implies someone is being misled.

How is cryptocurrency any more of a scam than fiat currency, ie. digits in the computer of some private bank or central bank?

JSavageOne··on Dear Spotify, stop treating your users like testers
Yea was just listening to a song on the Android app today, paused it on my Airpods to talk to someone, then tried to resume and nothing would play. Played something on a separate podcast app to test if there was an issue with my phone audio or headphones or something and that played without issue. Had to restart Spotify for the audio to start working again. What a joke - I mean the company is worth $30b and the app literally has one job.
JSavageOne··on Generative AI could make search harder to trust
Google search to retrieve specific factual information is pretty good.

Google search to retrieve anything opinion related has been horrible and infested with blogspam for years (hence people searching Reddit to get that kind of info).
