JDEW··on Netherlands bracing for potentially devastating US sanctions against the ICC
The US has always been actively hostile to the ICC [0].

[0] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Service-Members'_Prot...?

JDEW··on I wanted to build vertical SaaS for pest control, so I took a technician job
> Like my Dyson…

Which is wild because a Dyson has a premium price tag.

JDEW··on Flighty Airports
CDG shows yellow (“minor issues”), 65% of planes arrive on time, 0% cancelled. FRA shows green (“normal operations”) 59% of planes arrive on time, 4% cancelled.

Surely that’s wrong?

JDEW··on Trump's global tariffs struck down by US Supreme Court
> by the other countries

That makes zero sense. You mean “by lowering the profit margin on the goods sold to the US by that specific company”.

Countries don’t pay tarrifs (bar state intervention), companies do.

But yes, it’s probably a mix of the two: raising prices and lowering profit margins.

JDEW··on Children and Helical Time
> The motivation for making school more rewarding and less stultifying should not primarily be its effect on outcomes later in life, but rather that childhood is itself part of life, a very important part.

Almost makes me tear up. 1000 times this.

JDEW··on Show HN: Books mentioned on Hacker News in 2025
Nice! The entry for Abundance [0] is listed as another book (An Abundance of Katherines [1])

JDEW··on Thousands of U.S. farmers have Parkinson's. They blame a deadly pesticide
> …undisputed evidence… do not cause problems…

This is unworkable in practice; nothing will ever be completely safe. Instead, we need a public regulatory body that makes reasonable risk/reward tradeoffs when approving necessary chemicals. However, this system breaks down completely when you allow for lobbying and a revolving door between the public and private sectors.

JDEW··on Size of Life
Beautiful site. Also very pleased to see the mitochondrion being referred to as the powerhouse of the cell, as is law.
JDEW··on OpenAI says over a million people talk to ChatGPT about suicide weekly
> 1/800 users mentioning suicide…

“conversations that include explicit indicators of potential suicidal planning or intent.”

Sounds like more than just mentioning suicide. Also it’s per week, which is a pretty short time interval.

JDEW··on Electricity can heal wounds three times as fast (2023)
> Therefore, grains are cheap and people eat too much of them.

People only overeat themselves into obesity once you process those carbs into high fructose corn syrup etc. Seems like a very different problem.

JDEW··on Electricity can heal wounds three times as fast (2023)
To blame abundant food for obesity and not the fact that we make everything ultra addictive [0] seems like inverse logic to me.

JDEW··on A recent chess controversy
“You know, the most amazing thing happened to me tonight. I was coming here, on the way to the lecture, and I came in through the parking lot. And you won’t believe what happened. I saw a car with the license plate ARW 357. Can you imagine? Of all the millions of license plates in the state, what was the chance that I would see that particular one tonight? Amazing!”

-Feynman, from Six Easy Pieces

JDEW··on Japan and the Birth of Modern Shipbuilding
> The laissez-faire approach gave people happy, low-stress, and materially rich lives.

The usual schtick conveniently ignoring the absolute marauding of resources from non-western countries and the effective slave labor extracted from Asia.

JDEW··on Three Hundred Years Later, a Tool from Isaac Newton Gets an Update
> “Our algorithm right now is provably faster, in theory,” Ahmadi said. He’s hopeful, he added, that in 10 to 20 years, it will also be so in practice.
JDEW··on “A calculator app? Anyone could make that”
Also the “highschool poem”-type writing style is quite jarring but forgiven when he acknowledged it at the end of the article.

> Also I decided to try writing this thread in the style of a linkedin influencer lol, sorry about that.

JDEW··on I Met Paul Graham Once
> Are “identity politics” just a status game that economically advantaged elites play?

Yes. But it's a disgrace that we're throwing the baby (genuine progress, like the slow acceptance of non-binary people) out with the bathwater.

JDEW··on An academic Great Gatsby Curve – How much academic success is inherited?
Maybe I’m misunderstanding the article, but I find it baffling that they don’t mention the simple fact that the “best” professors have access to the “best” students. Especially early in career students. Never mind the fact that great schools -> employ great researchers -> enroll great students, even within one cohort this is clear. The top 5% of a class can do their undergraduate research everywhere they please and are in fact often scouted out by top chairs.
JDEW··on Arctic uses a fan to cool another fan
Maybe that's how they came up with the idea.
JDEW··on How Honeycrisp Apples Went from Marvel to Mediocre
Agreed, the experience the author describes with a Honeycrisp at the beginning of the article is something I recently had with a Cosmic. Let’s hope it lasts.
JDEW··on "My Bike Is Everything to Me"
> I don't think it costs 15kcals to carry 1KG of mass 1km on a bicycle.

Not to be pedantic, but you’re off by a factor of 100 :)

JDEW··on Kolmogorov Complexity and Compression Distance (2023)
> It has been demonstrated that KC(x), can be reasonably estimated by the number of bits required to encode x using a compressor C (such as gzip)

Talk about a cliffhanger :)

Using [0] you get 32B for Alice and 40B for Bob.

[0] It has been demonstrated that KC(x), can be reasonably estimated by the number of bits required to encode x using a compressor C (such as gzip)

JDEW··on Colon Cancer Is Rising in Young People: What to Know About Causes and Symptoms
The “everything is a chemical” ‘argument’ is an isolated demand for rigor imo. Everybody can reasonably squint their eyes, assuming good faith, and see that a compound created in a lab that has no nutritional value or is engineered to be overtly addictive (like high fructose corn sirup and what not) or any of the other million things we engineer every day to industrialize the food chain is what is meant by most people when they say “chemical”. And yes, many of these are bad for you, despite the (corporate funded) studies that say otherwise.
JDEW··on Man behind viral fake currency shocked by its success
> I don't recognize anyone's right to devalue the product of my labor…

This bit I agree with, although I would add that salary (i.e. plain cash) alone as the fruit of labour is insufficient and unfair, and amounts to wage slavery.

> Society's well-being isn't my problem, my well-being is.

Those are interlinked, as living in a bunker is not good for your wellbeing.

JDEW··on Plant patents sow fear among small growers
Then they just shouldn’t?

There’s plenty of universities, cooperatives, and passionate growers who have developed crops and seeds in the past and will surely continue to do so in the future.

The patent system is useful to address very specific market failures in very specialized industries where the above systems fail, not to turn the whole world into a rental unit.

JDEW··on Exactly How Much Life Is on Earth?
> ...highlighting the deep, underrated link between geophysics and biology.

Wait... what is the "deep" link exactly? And how does that follow from comparing numbers at face value?

JDEW··on Schoenberg: Why He Matters
> If all are omitted it's just a single note not a harmony, so there are 2^11-1 = 2047 functionally distinct harmonies. Most of them are of little musical utility, but you could conceivably use and have opinions about them all.

Unrelated but it reminded me of this [0] article discussed on HN a few times.

JDEW··on Henry Kissinger Has Died

JDEW··on Things you're allowed to do (2020)
> And if you grew up in a thrifty family, like me: …

Hits home for me. Many of those things are also actually cheaper in the long run.

JDEW··on Is capitalism dead? Yanis Varoufakis thinks it is – and he knows who killed it
Indeed, and it’s one of the most powerful tools in propaganda: slather on additional context so that it become indiscussible (as there is no common language anymore).

Capitalism is a power system where capital and not creation dictates ownership. If you define it like this, people are often more inclined to see it as unethical. Which is exactly what the ruling class (aka the owners of capital) doesn’t want.

JDEW··on Halfsies
