JD557··on Quite OK Audio Format
Hijacking this comment in case you (or someone from HN) knows.

Is there any particular reason that AIFF uses an 80-bit extended float precision for the sample rate, instead of a 32-bit integer like WAVE?

I assume this was an oversight at the time, but I'm curious if there are actual applications where sub-Hz (or 2^32Hz) precision is needed.

JD557··on iOS 17 app sideloading might only be available in Europe
I'm quite happy to read this, because my experience was also awful - they didn't accept the IMEI of 3 phones I tried and their app is full of ads (not to mention that I kept receiving scam calls).

I really hope that it's because they are awful and this is not the typical American mobile phone experience.

JD557··on Indigo: A game engine for functional programmers, in Scala
Yup. I'm quite hopeful that Scala could become a very nice ecosystem for creative computing, not only due to libraries but also tools that enable a (near) live coding experience like Scala CLI, Polynote and SCRiBBLE.

It's not all sunshine and roses, but I think its heading in the right track.

JD557··on iOS 17 app sideloading might only be available in Europe
It was the most common, but not the only method. You could (at least on Nokia phones) go to any wap site and download a .jad/.jar straight to your phone. I did that a lot on my series 30 (3510i).

I think other manufacturers allowed that as well, but I could only use the "free wap browsing trick" on Nokia phones, so I never explored that.

JD557··on iOS 17 app sideloading might only be available in Europe
Unfortunately, I don't think this is always true for physical SIMs.

I recently bought a temporary SIM in the US during my holidays (StraightTalk) and was surprised that you can only use the physical SIM after you register online with you IMEI. I haven't checked, but I imagine that after that the card would only work with that IMEI.

Fortunately, I don't think this is a practice in Europe.

JD557··on Bivector.net: Geometric Algebra Resources
I'm not an expert, but my understanding is: matrix rotations in 3d can lead to gimbal lock. That's why most 3d engines use quaternions instead. Geometric algebra offers a simpler alternative to quaternions.
JD557··on Web fingerprinting is worse than I thought
I think you can still be fingerprinted without cookies or Javascript (e.g. with HSTS supercookies). It's obviously not as effective.
JD557··on Blogging is not dying anytime soon
I would say even earlier than 2008, at least if my memory is not betraying me.

I guess it depends of your definition of blog, but I remember Fotolog being incredibly popular circa 2006 even when compared to mainstream social networks. While Wikipedia says it's a social network, I recall it was used mostly for blogging (not so much for social interaction).

And IIRC, when Google acquired Blogger (2003) blogging was not exactly a obscure thing, although I don't think I knew anyone with a personal blog back then.

JD557··on Hello, PNG
I'm also a big fan of QOI as a simple imagine format.

Yes, it's not as good as PNG (as the sibling comments point out), but I view it more as an alternative to PPM (and maybe a BMP subset), as something that I can semi-quickly write an encoder/decoder if needed.

IMO, PNG is in a completely different level. Case in point, in the linked article the author mentions to not worry about the CRC implementation and "just use a lib"... If that's the case, why not just use a PNG lib?

JD557··on Beyond Functional Programming: The Verse Programming Language [pdf]
Looks like it just went online: https://youtu.be/832JF1o7Ck8
JD557··on YouTube currently testing 5 to 10 unskippable ads before video starts
While fortunately I never had to call 911, I'm pretty sure this should be the case. Whoever answers the phone should be ready to either give you immediate instructions (or transfer you to someone who can do that) until an ambulance/police arrives.
JD557··on Mastodon still can’t replace Twitter
There are a few issues for that, but they haven't seen any activity in a while:

https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/3796 https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/2668

JD557··on In Praise of Stacked PRs
One alternative that I sometimes do is to continue the work on a new branch (just as if I was doing stacked PRs), but not send any new PR until the first PR is merged (or at least approved).

Mostly because stacked PRs are usually not ready for review until the base PR is reviewed, and are probably going to get rebased and require some refactors. I've had cases where the base PR had so many changes that I just started over on a new branch.

I know that GitHub now has draft PRs, but I still think that (unless you really want someone to take a look at the draft while the base PR is not merged), it might be better to not make people waste time looking at code that might suffer heavy changes.

JD557··on Contributing to WebSockets – Cryptocurrency Users
I'm not sure if I would call it a trend, but I would say projects released under under "Ethical Licenses" (such as the Anti-Capitalist Software License (ACSL)[1] or the Do No Harm License[2]) might fit the "you may only use this product if you support/disavow $x" description.

JD557··on The dangerous playgrounds of 1900s through vintage photographs
Probably this one about German playgrounds: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/oct/24/why-germany-is...
JD557··on Files – Single-file photo gallery and file manager
I think it makes sense in this particular case. I was actually looking for something like this for a while.

I just want a glorified `autoindex on`. I don't want to manage an extra container just for that.

(I'm speaking in regards to the file viewer option, looks like there's also a file manager option on the pro version and I have a bit more mixed feeling regarding that)

JD557··on Ask HN: How do you explain the sloppiness of modern software?
I think you might have a bit too much nostalgia (or maybe we just had very different experiences), but I remember Mac OS 8/8.6 crashing a lot, with the dreaded bomb icon.

Everyone I knew with an iMac had a toothpick or paper clip in the top handle, due to how common they needed to press the reset hole.

At the time my father used to edit a local news paper in PageMaker and it was particularly bad.

JD557··on Reversing an integer hash function
I think the word you are looking for is "permutation".

However, if you can use a permutation as a hash function, you might be fine with just using the identity function.

JD557··on Humble subscription service is dumping Mac, Linux access in 18 days
Same. I've been thinking about cancelling my subscription since September, as the quality of games seem to have decreased (or at least my interest in them) and I haven't really played any of them.

I've kept the subscription mostly out of FOMO, since I'm still in the old price tier, but I don't really need another launcher for games I won't play.

Also, I have quite the game backlog now, so I guess I'll just let the subscription expire and look for alternatives.

JD557··on Almost Always Unsigned
> So, let's make an odd_int_less_than_20587 type and a billion of other types?

I see your point, but I think that (while not always), it can still be pretty helpful to add your custom types to make invalid states unrepresentable.

This can sound ridiculous on something like C, but if your language has refined types, it's not that bad.

For example, this doesn't look awful to me:

``` type WeirdId = Int Refined (Odd And Less[20587])
val myId: WeirdId = 5 // OK val myInt: Int = myId // Can be used as an Int val myRuntimeId: Either[String, WeirdId] = refineV[Odd And Less[20587]](myId + 2) // Runtime Check val myInvalidId: WeirdId = 6 // Compilation Error ```
JD557··on New EU data blockage as German court would ban many cookie management providers
Not really that "big", but I think Scaleway doesn't have an US presence.
Might be a viable option for smaller players.
JD557··on Piracy release group EVO ‘blames’ movie industry for its popularity
One aspect of region locking that makes me very confused is dubbing.
I just moved to Germany and a lot of movies in streaming services are only available in the German dub, not with the original voices... Why?
I mean, I assume that for some reason the platforms just buy the rights for the dubbed version, but don't the subbed original versions also have a ton of demand (maybe more than the dubbed version)?
JD557··on Ask HN: What is the most meaningful work you have done?
I think about that once in a while, and I still think my most meaningful work was a small tool that I built while in college (almost 10 years ago).
The university website was pretty bad and in some programs the class enrollment was on a "first come-first served basis", so picking classes was a shit show (you could accidentally enroll in two classes at the same time).
So, me and some friends got to work on a tool to help student pick classes without overlaps. It would scrap the university website and show a nice timetable visualization of all classes that you wanted to attend, along with possible times.
I know it's nothing world changing, but it was pretty nice to see the traffic spikes and the positive feedback.
The website is still up to this day (although I think the code has been rewritten), so I guess that it's still useful :)
JD557··on The EU Wants a Universal Mobile Charger, but Apple Doesn’t
I was also thinking about this. I remember the days of "Does anyone have a Nokia charger with the slim head?", and it was not fun at all.
Nevertheless, from that Wikipedia: > Although compliance is voluntary[...]
Which sounds weird, because the Wikipedia describes Apple phones comming with an adapter to be compliant.
JD557··on Compiling Rust is NP-hard
> How do you get anything done when the cost of testing an idea is several hours?!
I haven't used rust in production, but usually you can just use `cargo check` to only run the typecheck. Using `cargo build` is also usually much faster than `cargo build --release`.
Having said that, at least in my toy projects it was not uncommon to have to compile using `--release` to run the tests (since otherwise the tests would take forever).
JD557··on Neural networks emulate any guitar pedal for $120
They claim to be using a LSTM, and I believe that any RNN-like architecture should (in theory) be able to learn a loop pedal.
If you aren't familiar with RNNs, think about it like a NN that instead of learning a input -> output function, learns a (input, state) -> (output, newState) function
JD557··on Facebook still ‘secretly’ tracks your iPhone
That's weird... I have tried it (I use it a lot on PC) and it works just fine.
It even has some extra features, like LaTeX support.
I guess you mean it doesn't work on mobile browsers? (Never tried that)
JD557··on Twitter's subscription service might cost $3 per month
I think using the tweetdeck interface (https://tweetdeck.twitter.com/) also helps, since it doesn't show recommended tweets.
JD557··on Happy Hacking: Music Implementation in NieR:Automata (2017)
While I agree that it's not really 3 times, I still think that it's useful to use that description when talking about games that do this, to be explicit that the "New game plus" option is integral to finishing the game.
I think this is an actual problem in Nier: Automata since (at least IMO and everyone I asked), the first ending is pretty underwhelming and it appears that the second playthrough will not change the story that much.
JD557··on Gnome 40
It's funny, because as a MacOS user I pretty much never use multiple desktops, although I used it a lot in GNOME 2, because of how obvious it was that there was something in another desktop[1]. I think it really help multiple desktops feel more "grounded in space", like another monitor.
In MacOS, other desktops feel like a background thing that it's easy to forget (kind of like having a process running on another `screen` session).
