JCWasmx86··on Microsoft’s new Windows prompts try to stop people downloading Chrome
> “‘I hate saving money,’ said no one ever. Microsoft Edge is the best browser for online shopping.”

This is really cringe

JCWasmx86··on Making Websites Small
I'm really annoyed of websites that are just showing text+images and then load dozens of JS-scripts.

Sure, for some functionality you may need JS, but in like 90% of the cases JS is overused.

JCWasmx86··on Ask HN: What are the best-designed things you've ever used?
GNOME. Everything is really intuitive, it doesn't really feel, like you use a computer, but the computer is an extension of you
JCWasmx86··on I moderate /r/kafka; people mistake it as a subreddit about kafka the product
These names are too short. Think of all the collisions. Use a full UUID, e.g: {84347ab5-45e1-4801-98fc-685624039068}

Googling your product will always be quite nice

JCWasmx86··on Microsoft Edge’s new ‘Buy now, pay later’ feature is the definition of bloatware
I think Microsoft did a lot more morally and ethically questionable things than Mozilla
JCWasmx86··on Kristall – Visual cross-platform browser for gemini, http, https, gopher, finger
Ah well, I understand. Thanks for the explanation!
JCWasmx86··on Kristall – Visual cross-platform browser for gemini, http, https, gopher, finger
What's wrong with GTK4?
JCWasmx86··on Kristall – Visual cross-platform browser for gemini, http, https, gopher, finger
For gemini I use either castor[0] or dragonstone[1]. Both are quite good, dragonstone even has tabs.

Both are written for GTK, so they integrate quite good with GNOME.

Just some random thoughts with subjective opinions:

  - Too much whitespace in my opinion.

  - Rows instead of columns feel a bit alien and are uncomfortable to use.

  - Missing tooltips (E.g. the buttons with the arrows: Are this upvote/downvote buttons or buttons to change the order of the sections, this is not clear without clicking)

  - Doesn't have a automatic dark mode (Well, it's a beta product, so I wouldn't expect it)

  - Some images look wrong (Firefox 94, Fedora): https://imgur.com/a/bKdTYPj
The news selections is at least for events in germany not that good: A lot of at least for me unknown newspapers, no Spiegel, Zeit, Süddeutsche, ... (Searchterm: "3g bayern")
JCWasmx86··on Denuvo-Protected Games Rendered Unplayable After Domain Expires
> Following the failure to renew, the domain then went into a grace period but when that expired too, it appears to have been removed from DNS records.
JCWasmx86··on Denuvo-Protected Games Rendered Unplayable After Domain Expires
If I understand correctly: If I had been fast enough to buy this domain, I would be able to break Denuvo for a long time?
JCWasmx86··on IAB Europe cookie consent pop-ups to be found in breach of GDPR
Fantastic news!

Sadly the majority of cookie "consent" banners is still in breach of GDPR.

JCWasmx86··on Linux x86 program start up – How the heck do we get to main()? (2011)
1. If you add a "ret", you just jump to an invalid address.

2. If you add nothing, the CPU will continue to execute the bytes that follow.

In both cases it is quite certain you end with a segmentation fault.(Or in case 2., an illegal instruction)

JCWasmx86··on CNN goes first two weeks of October without any program reaching 1M viewers
Can you explain why? (I'm not from the USA) I thought it is one of the best source for news about the US/World (Together with the NYTimes)
JCWasmx86··on Facebook-owned sites were down
Thanks, didn't know that!
JCWasmx86··on Facebook-owned sites were down
But still a part would be down, if a server has an outage. How about a system, where every device that is used for chatting is a server at the same time? I wonder whether something like that already exists. Bundle it together with bigger servers to handle the load. If the bigger servers experience outages, the service can still continue, although a bit slower
JCWasmx86··on Samsung kills the cameras on the Galaxy Z Fold 3 if you unlock the bootloader
Thanks, rephrased it a bit to make it obvious
JCWasmx86··on Samsung kills the cameras on the Galaxy Z Fold 3 if you unlock the bootloader
There is in my opinion a difference between a car and a phone.

If a car fails, people can die. If a phone fails, it normally doesn't have a huge impact.

If a car disables itself, because the central electronics were messed with by laymans, not some repair shop, it is in my opinion totally okay, as it would otherwise endanger humans.

But for a phone/other non-critical electronics, there is in my opinion no reason why its functionality should be reduced, just because you did something harmless like unlocking the bootloader. (In this case, the camera could still make photos, just without the fancy patented/copyrighted algorithms)

JCWasmx86··on Samsung kills the cameras on the Galaxy Z Fold 3 if you unlock the bootloader
Sadly this seems to be the trend of the last few years, that hardware is locked down and you sometimes have to use exploits to have full control over your device
JCWasmx86··on Samsung kills the cameras on the Galaxy Z Fold 3 if you unlock the bootloader
It's probably somewhere deep in the EULA/ToS and furthermore it is shown, while unlocking the bootloader. Whether this is legal or not, is surely an open question.
JCWasmx86··on Google’s ‘Project Hug’ paid out huge sums to keep game devs in the Play Store
Ironically this is the only thing preventing a chromium monopoly with probably >90% of marketshare (Although this restriction is still not that great for the user)
JCWasmx86··on Climate change: IPCC report is 'code red for humanity'
I frankly don't think this would make sense. Imagine explaining the people of a country, that they aren't allowed to fly to e.g. Mallorca anymore. The acceptance would be somewhere between low and zero.

Maybe private air travel in one country, e.g. from Munich to Berlin could be reduced, but not international flights without any resistance

JCWasmx86··on The LaTeX Font Catalogue
I love this font. It looks nice, makes texts more readable (At least it feels like that) and is for my purposes perfect
JCWasmx86··on Pegasus spyware seller: Blame our customers not us for hacking
I agree with you. You would have to find some accurate definition for "What is a democracy?", e.g. look at the freedom of press, freedom of election (E.g. are there any inconsistencies in the last elections), conflicts in a country. Based on a lot of factors you could probably say "This is a democracy" or "This is somewhere between".

But still no good solution.

And criminal would be too far, as such spyware should only be used against extremely serious crimes, e.g. warcrimes or terrorism

JCWasmx86··on Pegasus spyware seller: Blame our customers not us for hacking
Well. If they sell spyware to others, they should at least ensure/check, that it is only used against criminals and by democratic states.
JCWasmx86··on Police destroy Bitcoin miners with steamroller in Malaysia
Maybe do some number crunching for science?
JCWasmx86··on Microsoft Edge Used More Than Firefox
To be fair: A lot of usage of edge is probably because MS pushed it so hard with so many dark patterns and often repeated resets of the preferred browser. "Did you try the new Edge", "Try Edge!", ...
JCWasmx86··on Corona Game
If you do nothing: 143,728 deaths, CZK 996B costs, 3.9 to 16 million infections
JCWasmx86··on Corona Game
Full lockdown, except for some weeks: 507 deaths, CZK 2.221B used, 849M school days lost, 25.615 to 102.460 infections
JCWasmx86··on Only Windows 11 Pro will let you install Windows 11 with a local account
Tracking/Telemetry should always be opt-in. Or at least like:

Do you want to send following data: <Data that will be collected,...> <legalese>:

Big font: NO Small font: Yes

This would be the fairest design for all. Users would be able to make informed consent, vendors get data on a moral good way.
