JBReefer··on Leaked document: EU Presidency calls for massive internet filtering
Yeah - there's a ton of them around the internet these days. Tankies are the sort of people who defend the Venezuelan and North Korean governments on r/socialism, for example.

I have no idea what chunk of the actual population they are, but I know a lot of people in Antifa self identify as tankies. I could be wrong though, usually am.

JBReefer··on Leaked document: EU Presidency calls for massive internet filtering
A huge chunk of millennials are non longer believe in free speech [0], and everyone seems to agree that Facebook et. al's censorship of objectionable content is great. Between the insanity of the current government/far right, and the rise of the far/tankie left, I'm not sure that liberalism is long for this world, even in the West.

JBReefer··on U.S. Employers Struggle to Match Workers with Open Jobs
I'm literally working one something that's exactly that, right now. Connected by HAProxy joining APIs from both sides. Weird.
JBReefer··on Yes, Google Uses Its Power to Quash Ideas It Doesn’t Like
No, but I believe you can trust those that are open about their biases. For example, The Economist is very, very open about being a pro-free trade, pro-free market, pro-individual rights organ, in the tradition of classical liberalism. When you read a piece on, say, immigration in The Economist, you can suss the truth out because of this. Like it or not, the same is probably true of Breitbart - for example, I'd take their coverage of Chicago gun violence with a grain of salt, but would probably pa attention to their coverage of the opioid crises, than the ivory tower view of the NY Times.

What scares me more is when organizations claim to be impartial, like Google, Facebook, or the Times. Claiming to be impartial is claiming to represent absolute truth.

JBReefer··on Where did wealthy inventor live in 1991? California’s taxman wants to know
I never understood that - why do people brag about cheating the tax man? I have to make up the difference, in either (very slightly) reduced services or higher taxes.

It always struck me as odd.

JBReefer··on It rains solid diamonds on Uranus and Neptune
Generally people that sell inputs like shovels, jeans, and land. Prospectors generally lose money.
JBReefer··on Is There Any Point to Protesting?
That poem means the exact opposite of what you seem to think it means (like most allegories, to be fair).
JBReefer··on Dreamwidth Banned by PayPal in 2008 for Refusing to Censor Users
Netflix certainly offers "digital adult content" in shows like Easy, movies like Below Her Mouth, but PayPal accepts their business. You can buy content on Amazon with PayPal, which sells a TON of out and out porn.

Is it maybe more fair to say that small sites that offer adult content are not allowed?

JBReefer··on Metformin Promises to Extend Life for a Nickel a Pill
I'm going to need some citations here, I find it hard to believe that low-dose aspirin in healthy adults would substantially impact mortality in major trauma events.
JBReefer··on Tesla's 'long-haul' electric truck aims for 200 to 300 miles on a charge
The limit on truck size isn't because of human driving capacity, it's because road damage scales as the fourth power of axle weight. Trucks already do the vast majority of damage to our infrastructure, increasing the weight more would literally take down some older bridges.
JBReefer··on Apple Scales Back Its Ambitions for a Self-Driving Car
You are obviously not the median person, and the median solution will therefore not work for you.
JBReefer··on Chrome Enterprise
Even inside a given service - you think Viacom suddenly stops paying top talent without notice? They at least buy you dinner first.
JBReefer··on Who should be shamed, and who not?
I think this is fascinating, but your case would be a lot stronger if you provided some sources.
JBReefer··on The Life of a South Central Statistic
Jesus Christ, what a story.
JBReefer··on Ask HN: Web Development Roadmap?
Pick a stack for back and frontend, stay with it, and get good instead of jumping around constantly. Doing otherwise will slowly put you behind, and you will have to work pointlessly hard.
JBReefer··on Google is paying Apple billions per year to remain on the iPhone
Do you use the bang system in DDG? I think that more than makes up the difference.
JBReefer··on Investigating a ten-year-old estimate that “most social programmes don’t work”
Insulin is covered by a few different social programs in the US
JBReefer··on Millennials returning to Puerto Rico, launching startups
You're thinking of DC. Puerto Ricans are actually pretty conservative, there's a chance that DC will finally become a state now that PR has voted to join.

JBReefer··on A library of React components to make SVG maps using d3-geo and topojson
These really don't work so well on Firefox Mobile, unfortunately. The work is beautiful and the project looks like something I'd love to use!
JBReefer··on Canadian cable companies interrogate, search Montréal software developer
It's downvoted because its precisely wrong - the court ruled the search was outside the bounds of the law, and threw out the case. People fuck up all the time, but here, the system worked exactly the way GP wants it to.

Certainly the ISPs are at fault here, but the Canadian court system seems to be working just fine. The existence of the Anton Piller concept is troubling, still.

JBReefer··on Decrypting Amber Rudd
I honestly don't think so, the UK isn't important enough globally for WhatsApp to risk losing everything - look at what happened with them in Brazil, which is a larger WhatsApp market by a good bit.

A lot of this stuff feels like a vindication of how Indians make fun of Brits: foot stamping, bureaucratic, and out of touch with a world that has largely passed them by.

JBReefer··on The Decline of the American Laundromat
These responses are peak HN, it's hilarious and disappointing. The actual answer to your question is that tons of cities had beautiful public baths (I live next to a locked one), and shut them down when they became ground zero for AIDS transmission. Men were having risky sex in the locker rooms, and the closing of the public baths is seen as the turning point for the US taking the AIDS crisis seriously. The below address mostly private baths, but the rules ended both.

JBReefer··on Hypnotized by Hyperloop
Look up Measure R. LA has mostly given up on roads and is very aggressively building new public transportation lines. The city has repeatedly voted for taxes to fund these endeavors.
JBReefer··on Tesla Model 3 First Drive Review
You want a Ford F-150 or a Tacoma. You can spray the inside of those down with a hose, and range is definitely not an issue.

This is a midsized sedan.

JBReefer··on P&G Cuts More Than $100M in ‘Largely Ineffective’ Digital Ads
DuckDuckGo has been fantastic lately, and the bang system keeps me from using anyone else.
JBReefer··on Ask HN: What language/framework do you plan to use in your next project?
React + WebAPI on dotnet core. Fast, portable, good documentation all around, and simple.

Simple is good.

JBReefer··on Why has regional income convergence in the U.S. declined? Housing costs
That's started to happen again in the US, but you have to remember that many US cities were fairly dangerous and neglected until about 20 years ago.
JBReefer··on Why has regional income convergence in the U.S. declined? Housing costs
Dramatic increases in lifespan have produced a home owning class that would normally have died years ago, locking up a large chunk of the housing stock. Also NIMBYs.
JBReefer··on The Rise and Fall of the property-owning democracy
The situation has become insane. Here is a 2 bedroom in Jackson Heights, Queens for $815k - where the median household income in the area (which is not really gentrifying) is $51k:

https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/3413-80th-St-APT-52-Jacks...

I want someone to explain to me how this is going to work. We cannot structure our society this way, it leads to and has always lead to a landed gentry that is at a minimum semi-feudal, much less the social stability implications. The situation sounds much more serious on the West Coast, unbelievably.

I have no idea what's going to happen, but it's going to be bad, however this turns out.
