Izkata··on A Necessary History of the Oddest Letter: W
It's the first part of its name, "double-u".

H doesn't contain its sound either, and G has only one of the two sounds it makes (and it's not the one unique to it).

Izkata··on English: A vs. An
I think you missed the joke: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danish_pastry

> A Danish pastry (sometimes shortened to Danish)

Izkata··on English: A vs. An
Yeah, definitely inflection-based. A more relaxed one would indicate "a small amount", which for the opposite could be directly swapped with "many".
Izkata··on AI chatbots are becoming experts at changing people's minds
I'm not quite sure I'd phrase it like this, but it's close to what I think: Even back in 2023 or so people outside of tech would regularly claim the singularity already happened and LLMs were sci-fi style advanced superintelligences, so whatever they said was obviously right.
Izkata··on Everybody's Lost Their Minds
I've seen this happen to multiple co-workers, in the span of months. Two were laid off so I don't know how it's going with them, and another has backed off but not fully abandoned AI code. I'm resisting it entirely because of these problems.
Izkata··on Anecdotally, programmers dislike "reduce"
That one is built in:

  sum([1, 2, 3]) == 6
Izkata··on Learning Programming in an Age of LLMs
If we're talking about what's in the name, then keep going: it's a language yes, but it's a markup language, not a programming language.
Izkata··on Learning Programming in an Age of LLMs
> but no comments about the software quality, which for a lot of SaaS has gone downhill. It’s why they emphasized LoC and number of PRs but hide the number of bug tickets.

And here's some numbers (gathered from telemetry over time) showing that: https://www.faros.ai/blog/ai-acceleration-whiplash-takeaways

Here's someone's breakdown (with some things from the full report that aren't in the Faros blog post), showing how it's even worse than first impressions: https://unessays.substack.com/p/talk-is-cheap

Izkata··on People who can't picture anything are rewriting the science of imagination
> If the gap were so wide it seems like there would be more obvious giveaways in human behavior.

There was a couple who streamed on youtube who reacted to meme compilations, and years ago one of the things they reacted to referenced a similar topic. During that stream everyone learned the woman has no inner voice (including herself, she'd never even thought about it before and had no idea an inner voice was a thing).

While he was asking her what it was like, he brought up the voiceovers in tv and movies that were supposed to represent a character's thoughts. She had no idea that's what it was supposed to be, and always just thought it was some nebulous narrator describing what was going on.

I think any such signals would be a similar "wrong mental model" situation where you can usually only tell by poking at it with very specific questions or actions.

Izkata··on I resigned from Anthropic today
The way the most recent season of the show ended it looks like humanity may have been misled about the war, so it may end up fitting that more closely once they're done (I haven't read any of the books, just going on your comment).
Izkata··on There's a new "Google Jail" for independent wikis
I have no idea what happened behind the scenes, but Memory Alpha used to have its own hosting and was migrated to the hosted wikia, I think between 2010 and 2015. The old domain still redirects: https://memory-alpha.org/
Izkata··on There's a new "Google Jail" for independent wikis
I remember backlash against the name change. It seemed like they were trying to usurp the whole concept of a fandom, a sort of evil SEO to trick people into visiting the site.

I still call it Wikia on reflex.

Izkata··on The far right's win in Germany is sending a chill through Europe's establishment
> Is it really that hard to allow only legal immigration and stop giving incentives to illegal immigrants?

Suggesting they abandon a core part of their platform is a non-starter. At least in the US, the left isn't silent or neutral on illegal immigration, they are enthusiastically pro illegal immigration. One of the biggest reasons centrists have drifted to supporting the right is realizing the left no longer supports their values.

Izkata··on Initial effects of AI technology on employment look positive
You may be interested in this report from earlier this year: https://www.faros.ai/blog/ai-acceleration-whiplash-takeaways

And a breakdown of it that gives a bit of an alternate explanation of their numbers (and more closely matches what we're seeing IMO): https://unessays.substack.com/p/talk-is-cheap

Short version is that what you, I, and other responses to you are seeing is backed up by the numbers: AI code generation leads to significant bottlenecks, burnout, increased bugs, insane code churn (rewrites), and decreased feature deployment (presumably due to dealing with the bugs and bottlenecks). And as of when this was done, increased AI did not improve the situation, it generally made it worse.

The code churn stat is what bothers me the most: People keep portraying the whole "quickly rewrite/re-generate code with AI" thing as a feature, but looking at it over time, it actually means you lose your battle-tested code and no longer have a stable foundation to build on top of. That's where I think the major problems will show up as code needs to be maintained - and, seemingly, already has been.

Izkata··on Please don't rearrange our shoes when we turn up, paramedics in Japan urge
Where I grew up (suburbs in the Midwest in the US) it was common and expected all around that you'd leave your shoes just inside the door and walk around in your socks, at least for family/friends/guests. Can't remember about service workers.
Izkata··on Please don't rearrange our shoes when we turn up, paramedics in Japan urge
The "support your feet" argument came from the belief that everyone is supposed to have a prominent arch and that shoes could force your feet into that shape, but as far as I knew had been thoroughly refuted over the past 15-20 years. Forcing your feet into having an arch when it's not your natural form can actually cause problems further down the line. Soles not being flexible also changes how you use your ankle and IIRC how you balance while walking, possibly contributing to back problems.

Keeping your feet clean and protecting them from surfaces are the primary purposes of shoes. Some people need them for support after having worn shoes too often (my parents are in this situation and have a separate set of "indoor shoes" just for this), or some sort of disability that needs those super-wide-sole shoes, but in general they are not for supporting your feet.

Izkata··on Nitter and XCancel resume service after legal advice
Well, considering that never actually happened...

He made the "my heart goes out to you" motion (thump your hand over your heart, then fling it out towards the audience), people took a static image of the last part of it, and left out the context to create outrage bait for clicks.

Izkata··on QBittorrent breaks out of sandbox to commit crimes
Yeah, just off the top of my head have to find words that fit the duration and reasonably fit the mouth animation, replace idioms and jokes that don't exist in both languages, and not lose the appropriate tone.
Izkata··on True Rate of Unemployment
Minimum wage was first established in the US in 1938, so I'm not so sure they're wrong. Almost sounds more like you're confirming what they said, since it's barely been adjusted with inflation.
Izkata··on Hang on to Your Firefox
Those tabs telling you to restart are because the OS upgraded Firefox in the background and Firefox detected that its files changed under it. It tells you to restart so you don't get buggy broken behavior if anything was incompatible between the two versions. Firefox's built-in update system waits for a natural browser restart so it doesn't do that.
Izkata··on Show HN: Weedout – Safari extension that hides YouTube AI-labeled videos
> It's so simple for them to label AI generated content so people can either look for it or avoid it but they won't do it.

There is a small "AI" tag that shows up below the title when viewing the video. Don't know if it's automatic or self-applied though.

Izkata··on Google Has Removed MV2 Extensions from the Chrome Web Store, Including UBO
Two vague memories here: I think most of the Firefox slowness was caused by addons (both loading them at startup and adding to page latency), and Chrome's fast startup that caught casual users' eye was from completing things in the background that Firefox did before presenting the user with a UI.
Izkata··on Google Has Removed MV2 Extensions from the Chrome Web Store, Including UBO
Those weren't advertisements. The browser was packaged with other software and automatically installed if you didn't catch it and prevent it. I'm pretty sure it also made itself the default browser during the installation without user interaction.

There are screenshots of the installers in those links.

Izkata··on AI Can Make You Suck Faster Too
What I saw in these cases, the result was a few levels removed from the root cause and they'd add the same workaround to like 5 different places (and miss one or two) instead of tracking it back to the origin where the fix was that simple.
Izkata··on DoltLite: A SQLite fork with Git-style version control, built with 2k agent PRs
That's probably why they gave a range in their original comment.
Izkata··on Since it was stripped of planetary status, Pluto’s defenders have been fighting
> Eris is bigger than Pluto, so if Pluto’s a planet then so is Eris. So you have 10 planets.

Which is exactly how I remember learning it at the end of highschool (discovered during my junior year): Hey, did you know we just discovered a tenth planet?

Izkata··on Early 2000s were peak of humanity
In the US, adjustable rate is extremely rare in general. I had never even heard of them until my 30s in threads like these.
Izkata··on We found a division by zero bug in FFmpeg with a vibecoded fuzzer
Usually but not always. The challenge is after clicking the checkbox, if it can't manage to verify automatically. So those users have learned not to bother.
Izkata··on It’s so hard to finish an idea that is not yours and is just suggested by AI
My personal suspicion is that a lot of preexisting codebases are running on inertia. The abstractions exist and are used well so the generated code also uses it most of the time, with only occasional breaks to the abstraction that look like an acceptable tradeoff in isolation. But those would keep piling up to where the existing abstraction is no longer so identifiable and that's where the major spaghetti code issues start happening.
Izkata··on It’s so hard to finish an idea that is not yours and is just suggested by AI
From what I understand for most people it isn't a conscious choice, it happens slowly over time. People naturally don't want to waste time, the code is there and if you don't look too closely it works, so they start skimming instead of going in-depth, expecting anything majorly wrong to pop out. But those things probably won't because generated code is very good at looking extremely high quality at a surface level no matter how bad it actually is. So eventually even the skimming starts feeling like a waste of time so it tapers off too.
