Istof··on Apple Could Make Money by Bailing Out Greece
Couldn't Apple require the European union to reimburse them?
Istof··on Did I ever mention that I fucking hate the fucking web
I Still love the Web but we need at the very least something like a distributed open search engine / cache engine...

Istof··on One of the Biggest Privacy Wins in Recent Memory Has Been Reversed
end-to-end encryption is nice, but since the government can force companies to secretly add backdoors, it is pretty much game over for privacy?
Istof··on One of the Biggest Privacy Wins in Recent Memory Has Been Reversed

Istof··on Aaron’s Law Reintroduced: Computer Fraud and Abuse Act Didn’t Fix Itself
Because you vote for somebody who says he will fix something doesn't mean he will... they need to be held accountable somehow... Obama is an example of this.

Istof··on How long since Google said a Google Drive Linux client is coming?
Google dropped the "don't be evil" motto in 2009 and the Google "+" search operator in 2011... I think that is when Google stopped improving (on average) and even started to degrade services for business purposes (when viewed from a user's perspective). Since the user is the product, I guess it can make sense... but I don't like it.
Istof··on Deleting the Family Tree – Ancestry.com erased 10 years of correspondence
I like to backup my data to storage that I own too and I try to keep a copy of it on all my devices but while storage is getting cheaper everyday, hardware makers try to limit local storage on mobile devices every way they can to increase cloud business (even remove microSD card support), Google being a good example...

You would think that by now a $650 phone would have a lot more then 32gb of storage.... But even if you have a phone that supports an external microSD card, Google makes it difficult to write to it using a 3rd party Android app (stating security as a reason).

There should be a law that prevent companies from keeping root to themselves on devices that you own.

Istof··on Apple now rejecting apps with Pebble Smartwatch support
Apple always closely controlled what hardware can be used with their software, even in the 90s... which is why I never purchased it. Always been the opposite of Microsoft in that regard.
Istof··on Google purges bad extensions from Chrome
somewhat unrelated but if you email a private URL to a Microsoft email address, they will also crawl it, about once a month (I get an email anytime someone access it and MS bot is the only one accessing it). Not sure if Google also does that...

Istof··on DHS to Launch Nationwide License Plate Reader Program
I wonder if you would be able to do a FOIA request to get your data?
Istof··on My life with Comcast
Every month or so, my Comcast service goes down for at least 1/2 day at a time, but Comcast is currently my cheapest option. Many local businesses also rely on Comcast and when that happens, you can't pay by card. ATT used to be priced similarly but since they only let you subscribe for U-verse (DSL is no longer available for new customers), the price increased twofold for the same services (6mbps DSL VS 6mbps u-verse)

Istof··on Best Linux server backup system?
I backup using rsync some important files to a local and remote server(s) daily in a TGZ archive and keep the last 14 days, last 10 weeks (1/week), last 11 months (1/month), and 1 yearly forever.. Very much based off of this: https://nicaw.wordpress.com/2013/04/18/bash-backup-rotation-... ... appears to work pretty good for a small amount of data.
Istof··on Reasons not to use Facebook
I agree with you but I think that you used the wrong term... "use" should probably be replaced with "be cataloged by"... for example they do face recognition on all pictures, they harvest contact information from other people installing the FB app, they collect non-facebook browsing information using the "share to facebook" code that might get linked to your real identity somehow (third party sharing of information between companies?) even if you aren't "using" Facebook.

Istof··on Yahoo Starts Prompting Chrome Users to “Upgrade” to Firefox
I love Firefox but it is unusable on my Android phone because it uses close to 100% CPU (I tried the latest version less then 2 weeks ago) ...

edit: downvote me, but Firefox is still way too CPU intensive on Android
