IslandRebel··on PS5 Linux lead quits: "a bunch of noobs using LLMs" that "they don't understand"
Sure, but that wasn't what I was getting at. The guy is complaining about the exploit being disclosed to Sony, but anyone who used the same tools could have found it. It's kind of like complaining that someone has spoilt the ending to a film when it been out for over a year.
IslandRebel··on Most people prefer traditional architecture
The article is about the schism between the experts and what people generally prefer and recommends that said experts should try to take that into account. People almost always prefer traditional architecture. Is it really subjective when a vast majority of people agree? I suppose technically it is, but at the same time not really. There is obviously something that people prefer about it other than it being old.
IslandRebel··on PS5 Linux lead quits: "a bunch of noobs using LLMs" that "they don't understand"
> “Slop kiddies found the only hypervisor bug left, which I had also found a while ago, and decided to report to Sony,” the modder said on social media. “I asked them to at least wait for GTA 6 to come out so that people would have the opportunity to legally purchase the game and also enjoy linux. They agreed to wait, but not a day passed and they decided to waste it instead.”

If one user could have found this using AI. Then I would imagine anyone else could have found it.

I don't care for this argument at all. There are functional buildings where I live from the Industrial Revolution that look quite nice. I want things to look nice where I live. I don't want them to be ugly and demoralising.

As for the building you showed me. I think it looks awful. It actually looks worse than the architecture in movie Equilibrium.

IslandRebel··on Vibe Coding is the new Internet Dating?
> The lack of respect software developers have for their craft confounds me every day, to the point that I wonder if anyone in software actually writes code because they enjoy it, instead of making money.

I used to enjoy it, and after many years of being asked to do nothing other than boring web applications or my work literally being thrown away (which worked perfectly) because management decided that it had to be implemented in <new language>. I worked hard to write something simple and well documented and worked as well as I could, and it was thrown away. I've had other so-called "lead developers" take credit for my ideas and then implement them so poorly; it was clear they misunderstood it entirely. I've had people straight up lie about what I would be doing in a position. I am currently trapped in a job where I was straight up lied to about what I was doing.

These sorts of experiences have left me completely jaded as a result. I know I am not alone.

I seldom have time to work on my own projects. Software is much more complicated than it used to be, and simply getting things working in a framework or scaffolding a project can take a lot of time. With the AI I can prototype software very quickly, while using my existing skills to stop it from going off the rails.

What I find strange is that you said specifically that he couldn't have been deceived and then described Tommy Robinson as a crook. Your internal logic isn't consistent.

What I am trying to explain to you is that this may not be because he is some sort of unrepentant racist. It happens because it is partly a reaction to people like you who are preachy and moralistic and due to him listening to the wrong people after his worldview is rocked.

DHH probably sees the information you are referring to as being manipulated because he has been deceived. He literally doesn't believe that, so arguing from that starting point is completely pointless.

I've fallen down the political/conspiracy rabbit hole myself. I've seen it happen to other people. So I can empathise with someone else doing the same. Just because he has money doesn't mean he is immune to this.

The fact that you are unwilling to even bother entertaining any explanations is a moral failing on your part.

> You can call me names all you like but I think it’s kind of weird that you would go to bat for him like this.

You were unwilling to bother doing some basic investigation. This is quite frankly unacceptable tbh, especially after you expressed such strong views. That is being wilfully ignorant.

Also, there is nothing weird about what I am saying at all. I suspect, like others have done to me, you just want to call me a secret fascist simply because I don't want to condemn someone because they have expressed an unpopular viewpoint.

I am also fed up of this being brought up every time the project is mentioned. I am not the only one that is fed up of this sort of stuff. Recently I had two friends fall out recently over the Russo-Ukraine war. One of them simply said, "Look, dude, I don't care, I am bored of hearing it." The other lost the plot. I've also said this to some people I know someone on the right when they start going on about woke shite and leave our convo group after we said "I don't care about this stuff".

IslandRebel··on CSS-Tricks in Limbo
All you are telling me is that you are going to be wilfully ignorant. That is intellectually dishonest.

Constantly reiterating that he can't have been deceived when I've told you how it happens to people and there are similar examples elsewhere is being an ignoramus.

IslandRebel··on CSS-Tricks in Limbo
> There are things in that article that are really a long way beyond having been deceived

I don't believe so. Can you explain exactly how it is impossible he is deceived?

> They cannot and must not be minimised in that way.

Why not? To me what I described is what fits 100%. You just asserting that is the case hasn't explained why I might be incorrect.

You clearly haven't taken what I've explained to you on board at all. I suggest you bother checking out any of how this occurs in any other conspiracy circles, e.g., UFOs or just watching something that promotes conspiracy theories, such as Hunting Hitler (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5248878/). It's the same mechanism, just a different form.

> And nobody who criticises them should feel any blame if he doubles down; he is a wealthy privileged white man who is solely responsible for the things he says.

I am not saying people should feel blame for criticising him. I am saying that should be blamed for brow-beating him.

Are you telling me he cannot be deceived because he is wealthy? Plenty of wealthy and privileged people are/have been deceived.

IslandRebel··on CSS-Tricks in Limbo
It was a turn of phrase. I am just pointing out that it is extremely unlikely.

I don't think any of this is politically motivated (the Linux stuff). I don't see anything on the site that even mentions anything remotely political.

IslandRebel··on CSS-Tricks in Limbo
Pretending that support for a Linux distro is going to translate directly (or at all) into political lobbying that is going to eclipse large donor groups that will sink hundreds of millions behind a candidate is delusional.
IslandRebel··on Linux from Scratch
I did it in a VM took me 20 hours. Most of that time was waiting for things to compile and fixing mistakes I made because I didn't read the instructions properly.
IslandRebel··on CSS-Tricks in Limbo
I am quite aware how it works. What you are describing is nationalism which isn't what is happening online these days. Nationalism is an older form of propaganda / State control. I am not a Libertarian/Ancap but this is a concise description of the mechanism.

> Since most men tend to love their homeland, the identification of that land and its people with the State was a means of making natural patriotism work to the State’s advantage. If “Ruritania” was being attacked by “Walldavia,” the first task of the State and its intellectuals was to convince the people of Ruritania that the attack was really upon them and not simply upon the ruling caste. In this way, a war between rulers was converted into a war between peoples, with each people coming to the defense of its rulers in the erroneous belief that the rulers were defending them. This device of “nationalism” has only been successful, in Western civilization, in recent centuries; it was not too long ago that the mass of subjects regarded wars as irrelevant battles between various sets of nobles.

I find these sorts of conversations tiresome. Almost nobody who isn't interested in particular parts of the tech remotely knows who DHH is. He managed to secure some funding for his Linux distro. None of this directly translates to the broader political landscape.

I think you and others that pretending that this is the case, is borderline delusional.

IslandRebel··on CSS-Tricks in Limbo
I am sorry but you severely misunderstand how politics work if you believe the amount of money and some notoriety online will translate into votes / enacting legislation.
IslandRebel··on CSS-Tricks in Limbo
> Let's call it what it is, someone crying because their project isn't getting the love it wants while someone new did. Welcome to life. This happens all the time in business. CSS-Tricks is old, it had it's time and now it's time to move on. DO can do whatever they want. If they want to focus on getting Omarchy popular, then so be it.

CSS Tricks was a massively useful resource. However tailwind and/or other frontend frameworks have abstracted a lot of this away and tbh I've haven't even bothered looking at the site in several years.

> And dude, what is with all the DHH hate??? The dude isn't a Nazi, fascist or racist. The dude sees the country he loves turning into a cesspool and wrote about it. We're seeing the same thing here in the US with all these immigrants taking over Michigan.

Unfortunately political polarisation is affecting everyone and everything.

The topic is an almost obligatory mention any time Omarchy gets mentioned. I've seen stuff like this webpage https://stopomarchy.neocities.org/ where they are claiming Jeff Geerling to be a fascist, which is obviously ridiculous.

I don't believe DHH to be a fascist or whatever (yes I read the blog post, it is standard reactionary politics that been around for about a decade now). I am not sure why feel the need to constantly mention it, I understand he may have some views that people disagree with, but he cannot realistically affect any change. The obligatory mention feels performative IMO.

Moreover, I deeply disagree with the politics of many prominent people (of all political persuasions) that are often front and centre in tech, you won't hear me mentioning it unless it is relevant to their work or they are in a position to actually affect change.

IslandRebel··on Let's make quality the norm again
Existing regulations should cover software in their respective industries. Outside of that what you are asking for is simply onerous and isn't something that can be regulated in a meaningful manner.

We've already had opensource projects threatened by the age-check legality nonsense (which cannot be enforced). If you regulate what features can/can't be in an OS you will end up negatively affecting opensource and/or hobbyists which will give the consumer less choice.

The only reason we have an actual alternative to Windows is because people create their own Linux distros and software around it.

IslandRebel··on Most people prefer traditional architecture
I've seen plenty of examples of Brutalism in architecture (in the UK) first hand and to most people it looks like ugly concrete blocks with hole in it.
IslandRebel··on Linux from Scratch
LFS is worth doing if you are interested in learning how Linux distro is put together. There is a fair bit of reading involved. I did the entire thing in a Debian VM.
IslandRebel··on Linux from Scratch
You need to actually read the book and not just copy and paste commands. Many of the questions you have are answered in the book.
IslandRebel··on Data collected by cars and sold to third parties
> Talking as an eastern european: unless you live in a sunshine place (~Mediterranean) most of the 90s car already eaten by the rust + the salt used for defrosting on roads in the winter.

You can still find good examples in the UK where we have salted roads. I've paid for mine to be dinitroled. Pot holes etc are a problem here and they will affect newer vehicles too and used to go through a tyre a winter.

IslandRebel··on Data collected by cars and sold to third parties
I am driving a vehicle from the 90s. Works very well. Old British Vehicle so it leaks out oil everywhere but any vehicle that is more the 20 years old will be leaking oil. Have significantly less problems than the car I sold (which was 20 years newer).
IslandRebel··on Fuck it, make it anyway
> Idk folks, maybe it's because I actually don't like writing software as much as I thought I did. I'm realizing I actually like making products and creatively solving problems, and software is a mildly enjoyable means to and end for that. I also like many aspects of the job of programming (money, sitting on my ass, dictating much of my workday, feeling like a boss, also money, etc). I was lucky to be alive in a time when that role was in demand but I can now see that is coming to an end for at least 80% of us. Yes, probably you, and probably me.

Yep, this is what I realised. I like solving a problem/fixing something. I am not really interested in hooking up a Go/Python/C# web service to a database for the umpteenth time.

I've been partially vibe-coding a new desktop environment for Linux and creating my own UI framework. I know how UI frameworks generally work, and I know how desktop environments generally work. What I want to do is build a DE that works well and fits my vision of how it should work functionally.

I am reasonable at C++ (I don't do it professionally). Do I want to spend 20 hours doing a load of UI boilerplate code in C++? No, I don't. I am sure I can do it, I've written UI frameworks before in other languages. But I get the machine to do all the boring stuff, and I develop the product. If the code it starts churning out is crap, I have the ability to fix it.

There seems to be a lot of crap about not being able to code after using AI for a few months. This is rubbish. I used to code when I was a kid in BBC BASIC and didn't for years, I then started coding again in my early 20s and all of the stuff I learned came back to me, and I was programming in Java. Same recently, I didn't program for about 4 months and had to program without the AI as the AI couldn't solve what I was doing, and I was fine.

IslandRebel··on Shopify is moving from React Native back to Swift and Kotlin
I've had it work well on both (iOS and Graphene OS) using Brave browser on both. It is simply much better when you are on a unstable connection than any of the other sites.
IslandRebel··on Shopify is moving from React Native back to Swift and Kotlin
It is both tbh. Anyone can build a poor clone of an application. However there are many things that you don't realise is happening beneath the scene.

It is all the small things e.g.

YouTube Mobile website works really well when you have a inconsistent connection compared to the alternatives such as Odysee, Rumble, Kick and Twitch.

I can listen to a live stream or a video style podcast in the car and YouTube will resume the connection properly as long as the browser tab on my phone hasn't gone to sleep. Kick will just stop, if it is a replay it will resume from the start of the stream after rewinding the stream a few seconds while attempting playback.

While the code to do this isn't that difficult. YouTube has bothered to deal with the edge case of someone like me driving through an area with inconsistent connection while running their mobile site (not even their app).

Whenever people try to use alternatives, they often complain about poor reliability of the app. A lot of the clones are losing users and I doubt they really even know they are doing it.

IslandRebel··on Claude is only available to people over 18 years
Equivocating children bypassing social media age gates to child rape is disingenuous and asinine.

The point being made is that these age gates are often easily defeated and is impossible to enforce at scale.

Moreover it allows companies to collect a huge amount of bio-metric data which is difficult for users to remove once it is collected. This data has can be and has been exposed.

IslandRebel··on Growing proof that autonomous cars save lives
Pretending that owning a car is like an addiction because you saw an overweight woman and her children and then made a bunch of supposition afterwards isn't something anyone should take seriously. I've seen fat people use trains and buses, I am sure she can make it to the nearest bus station on foot.

I used to be an avid cyclist and used a lot of public transport in the past.

I no longer cycle nearly as much because I was fed up of having to carry a bunch of kit on my back (lock, repair kits, allen keys, water proofs), having to deal with the wind, wet and cold and often you will have minor accidents if you commute enough, you just have to have someone's dog runs out in front of your in the cycle path, someone steps out between two vehicles without looking and you end up hitting the deck.

Public transport IMO sucks unless you live near an urban area. Cycling more than say 15 miles is untenable for commuting. I saw this as someone that spent an entire summer riding centuries (100 mile routes).

After I got my license it given me a lot of freedom. Now I cycle when I want to, not because I have to an enjoy it much more as a result. I enjoy being able to have the choice to either drive, cycle or walk. I also use by vehicle for offroad driving, day trips, camping etc. It gives me a lot of freedom to explore places.

Having a motorised form of transport that you own and lets you get where you want quickly, comfortably and safely is a major improvement to many and thus why many people are willing to forego the expense.
