Irongirl1··on Ask HN: My competitors have flawed products but I can't get traction
May I interject?

It has always seemed odd to me that instead of using the "ant trails", as it were, things are set to cause people to do something completely different from what they normally do. It seems harder, somehow...and not as effective.

You want to attract the attention of those who already go out and do things:

bikers, rock climbers, eaters of gourmet meals etc. So wouldn't partnership with these places and apps be the most effective? When you get someone on board...and if your project is properly made, then it should be easier to figure out what isn't correct. You are making assumptions without evidence...any at all, which seems premature. So you need data points to create a direction.....

I hope I'm being clear, as I am a hermit....and go nowhere. But if I were looking to find groups, then I would try a directory like Organized Obsessions ( print only) and pair that with an online effort to advertise in their newsletters etc. Jim Novo's Drilling Down for data collection and Lob.com to know whom to mail. A hybrid approach...which may yield good results. But definitely targeting first.

Irongirl1··on Ask HN: What could I build to make your life a little easier?
Revive Lazarus Form Recovery.

Refactor Better Open With.

Oh, the list is long, really long. So many left for dead programs that were just ahead of their time.

A universal installer/package manager for Github.

I have two folders on my computer filled with BIFM (build it for me) projects that are now several years old because I don't code and cant vibe code. Not everyone who sees a gap should necessarily be the one who codes a solution.

Irongirl1··on News publishers take paywall-blocker 12ft.io offline
Frustrating. Someday, I'd like to see headlines that focus on news publishers working on reasonable payment systems for article access. Like bulk buys ( X articles for $) via giftcard or whatever. Instead, every single time this comes up, it always ends with less access, more siloing...less connections made, more cruft to shift. Innovation requires access to info, but if you never see it...it's hard to make connections that count or that could be helpful. Same problem that appears in Science research...if only on a smaller scale.

Irongirl1··on US Court nullifies FTC requirement for click-to-cancel
I think it was 30 years ago now, but I could be off by a few. My mother "insisted" on me signing up for an infomercial product for her...I offered to buy it outright (it was in stores for less than the deal they were offering and deliver it personally) she declined and kept insisting. I did so and signed up for 1 shipment. They charged me for months afterwards and put my checking account, to which the card was tied into overdraft and refused to refund. I was lucky because I was at a small bank which still had personal bankers and she was kind and reasonable. She reversed the charges for me and got me my money back. That company stole my grocery money and didn't blink an eye.

Again: this was at least 30 years ago. Nothing was changed. The companies that take advantage are still taking advantage and the government is facilitating theft, fraud and tons of stress on those who can ill afford it. It is a major issue also for seniors who constantly get trapped in this crap. They tie people up with confusing forms and jargon and make it impossible. They have no shame. Check Rip-off Reports, if they are still allowed to exist, or webarchive...the stories are awful. It's past time for people to be able to stop this thru their cards or tactical action. The cost to pay a lawyer to fight this kind of crap also falls on the person who files-think travel if they are out of state...most of these companies are based miles away and know that people can't afford to fight them.

Irongirl1··on Postcard is now open source
Ok, I want to do this..it's past time for me to have a web home, but I am leery because I'm so non-techie. I've made note of most of the stuff I want to use, but I am hoping you can answer a really stupid question about size. How big does the mini pc have to be to simply run a static site and newsletter?

I know I'm going to get all-sorts of comments and recently had a terrible experience with a tech bro, so please go easy on me...

And if you answer, thanks in advance..

Irongirl1··on US Court nullifies FTC requirement for click-to-cancel
FYI: Everyone just use privacy.com

It allows you to make virtual cards that are single use.

So if a merchant keeps trying to charge you, it will automatically decline.

Until the powers that be gets its act together and stops allowing businesses to run all over us...this is the way.

Irongirl1··on Ask HN: What old or outdated software have you never found a replacement for?
FYI: found this while searching for dtp programs that maybe didn't suck...and it seems wonderful. I'm still searching for a book topic, but I thought I would share it here if it helps anyone

http://pollenpub.com

Irongirl1··on Ask HN: What is something you deeply care about?
Censorship.

All kinds including tech. People not wanting to allow someone to read a book because the person is "in trouble with the law." What does their breaking the law have to do with their explanations of how a technology works? Nothing...and the removal of a book says more about the vendors than it does about the supposed criminal. Generally censorship as practiced in this country is more about politics (ie: someone not liking someone else) than it is about accuracy.

Irongirl1··on I made a universal credit system as an alternative to subscriptions
Snort

Not do well in future....hahahahah.

They don't officially have a future. And this is from a wannabe reporter..who once won a placement in a special edition of The Boston Globe. They gave up everything they are supposed to stand for and shot their supposed integrity in the face. The Buzzfeed/Gawker years finished them off. They should have paid for a mercenary team to rescue Daniel Pearl...instead the World watched his execution and expressed their sadness and shock PFFt!!!

Instead of investing in Timberland and ink factories-did you know ink sells for over $1k an ounce?-and whatever was growing laterally, they dug their heels in and now they are dead in all but name. Most of the "stories" they print are nothing more than ads and even the WSJ gutted itself after Murdoch bought them. The Personal finance section was one of the best with the best copywritten sales letter ever. They cut that too. But occasionally, I need a story and having to pile them up for several months to make the buy worthwhile is exceedingly annoying.

Irongirl1··on I made a universal credit system as an alternative to subscriptions
Ok, now go do this for newspapers...and then convince everybody else that this. is. the. way. Please? I am so sick of having to sign up for a monthly charge when I only need one article...and then forgetting to cancel and getting another ding in the next billing cycle. It sucks. If newspapers would just sell credits or a package of articles that never expire, it would be great. I've had to hold onto research I've been working on so I can do them all at once and it is always some ridiculous number like #127 articles that I had bookmarked from BI over the course of a few years. So then you are left with the Herculean task of trying to print #127 articles in a 30 day period.

The one time a company did this here it was beautiful. Loopnet was set up this way in the beginning. So if you only needed one report, you could just buy that one and not have to worry about recurring charges or unused time. The alternative is to never sign up for anything and watch as promising, potentially useful stuff dies on the vine. That's been my approach lately as the other way is too much hassle for a small scale, single-user. If all of SaaS is only meant for corps with 50 seats or more...it's going to get nasty out there because people aren't forming companies like they used to..and lean teams are the future.

Irongirl1··on The Logic of Stupid Poor People (2013)
Think of mad libs for the rest of my comment and we might actually reach some form of understanding.

I used to spend <hours> every month getting ready to go work. A half hour before every shift just to make sure that what I was wearing wasn't "too ghetto" in someone's mind before I walked out my front door. Why? So I wouldn't attract unwanted attention. Not from police officers, store clerks, or random Karens intent on trouble. If I could get that time back, oooh boy!

I used to speak overly properly to certain people so that they knew my education wasn't the "poor, public school variety" and therefore wouldn't give me extra grief my asking unanswerable questions or putting blockades in my way "just because". It doesn't mean they didn't, it just means it felt easier to me. Maybe it worked, but probably not. They probably just thought I was showing off...

I worked on giving up swearing for years. I did it solely to appear more like the people I was interacting with on a daily basis. Ultimately, we all make minor, but impactful, changes to ourselves for the sole purpose of improving outcomes. How many times have you adjusted your resume to accommodate changes in hiring policies or procedures?

This is no different;the modus operandi is simply more analogue. Buy a handbag, get an interview. Adjust your brochure, (get a sale or) a job in this case.

Irongirl1··on Ask HN: What to do when you're out of money and can't find a job?
I've been researching Rust and it seems to be mainly used in embedded systems.

Have you made the funding rounds? A Rust based system which runs on Sidewalk and manages power use in households seems really needed. A few years ago a product which more accurately manages dryer time (and therefore saves homeowners money and energy) was shut down to the general gnashing of teeth. TBH, I wanted to revive it myself almost immediately, but I don't have any bonafides and I had a ton of other things on my plate to try and fix.

As far as I know, it hasn't been revived yet. I'm sure that other use cases will appear. The energy one is foremost because we are facing a huge energy deficit over the next few years (5-10). Homeowners will have to start producing some, if not all, of their own power as private companies take over the grid. They are making deals already and getting sued for them. The estimates are that we need ~$2t to do upgrades;but I believe it is more like 2.5x times that and it doesn't seem to have trickled down yet.

Soon enough Amazon Power Systems, Meta Power and GPower will be controlling whether or not you can have ac during peak hours or if you can keep the lights on....and certain businesses will be prioritized over the masses for sure. If you are as well known for Rust as I suspect...you should have minimal problems raising a few million to take this on. Looking for a regular person job..is pointless at your stage in life because most places won't hire you. You are too well known and they would consider you vastly overqualified. So instead of heading downstream, head up.

Purdue has invented new charging cables which will speed up ev charging time, but I am curious as to whether or not the same tech will work over longer distances and could then be used for residential systems. If so, then a monitoring system which is more stable and accurate, while being easy to maintain sounds like a perfect fit.

Good Luck

If you want the info about the company that closed, my email addy is in the box

Irongirl1··on Ask HN: Is there a list available of startups that will be shut down?
I get that, but surely someone can point me in a direction other than networking. I'm an introvert...I don't do networking. How can sunsetting all these companies be good for the Valley? The closure rate is 80+% and we need tech jobs, surely a win, even if it's not 10x is better than another loss.
Irongirl1··on How do you determine the best price for your self-published book?
Edit: I didn't notice for a few days, but I mistyped my comment. It would say "I own the program". Instead it implies that I own the company. Sorry, finger syndrome.
Irongirl1··on How do you determine the best price for your self-published book?
Well, not having a book is my first problem, but I think I'd look at

https://www.kdspy.com/.

Fair notice, I own, because I had thoughts about writing some day and I wanted a decent research tool. But my writer's block was worst than I thought. It is an excellent product though and I have no qualms about suggesting it.

Good luck

Irongirl1··on Ask HN: Are you aware of a sane path to selfhosted email server?
I own domain names, but I'm not smart or techie enough to do it myself.

I found Modoboa: https://modoboa.org/en/ and when I finally do it and if they are still around, I'll probably go with them.

Irongirl1··on OtterTune Is Shutting Down
DBs are everywhere and it seems like we are always seeing stories about things going wonky. A DB specialist would seem like a "know"-brainer. I looked for why you are shutting down and didn't find much...was this a VC thing?

I admit my ignorance about such things but the middle layer would seem to be a great place to be..a pick and shovels story in a tech world too filled with unicorns and not enough actual workers. The glamour shots get all the glory, but the breeches seem to happen because the middle layer wasn't setup properly.

Was there an option to sell instead? I mean, I hate that companies with actual paying customers and PMF will close for no reason...at least, no good reason.

Look at Sendy. I'm not affiliated and if it is what you are looking for I'm delighted. www.sendy.com
Irongirl1··on Ask HN: How to find problem worth solving today?
May I inquire where you are (as in what country)?

Because all of the G7 are in debt and drowning fast.

So the balance sheet is the place to look. If in the USA, McKinsey has a excellent report called The Digitization Report, which looks at the tech enablement on an Industry level. The usual suspects are trailing: healthcare, education and government.

On a related note, small government offices (think water boards and fire fighters etc) in the US suffer from frequent fraud. They don't use credit cards or they use them inappropriately. A tool to stop such misuse would be very helpful...but can you get them to use it?

On the impact side, are you trying to be Bezos or Musk? Both Billionaires, both exceedingly valuable impact, different fields of endeavor.

Bezos gave the World upto 2+ hours back per week and Musk forced a conversation that car crazy America was loathe to have...both high-impact (which is all this answer is about ..not their politics or what-have-you).

Cities and towns have huge problems bringing business back. VCs are shutting down valuable startups because they didn't go vertical. Airplane was shutdown because they believed the new narrative that AI would soon make them obsolete. I think that was a mistake. The average SMB isn't bothering with AI...and who can blame them? It's an error filled mess. But they all (some 500K) need help automating because hiring is harder than ever and employees are expensive.

Instead of shutting down, it could have been the next Basecamp or RedHat. A slow consistent grower which provides steady tech-related employment which the US desperately needs in states other than CA. Most of which have better cost of living and metrics in every other measurement as well.

A tool which calculates which state has the best incentives and the best packages for employees moving? A Teleport x MainStreet combo??

Which I haven't done yet due to various setbacks last year and just general foolishness.

Irongirl1··on Ask HN: Is It Worth Building the Next Headless CMS?
Not sure I count as having an opinion that matters, but the answer is yes, always.

Yes there is always room (there are ten BILLION people on Earth and most of them aren't even fully online yet)(America isn't the only country in the World, we just act like it), yes, it is always worth it..if only for the learning experience and yes, you should take all the previous responses with a grain of salt.

Yes, even mine. There will always be someone to turn you down, discourage you (actively or sneakily) there will always be an Edison, and you will always find folks in your way simply for the sheer h*k of it.

But if you really think there is something necessary in what you are attempting, then only opinion that truly matters is yours.

Don't let them stop you.
