Irene··on Ask HN: What is your startup?
http://Aurametrix.com

Aurametrix is an analytics engine driven by knowledgebase of everything related to health. It makes connections between your specific symptoms or measurements and your weather, air quality, food, exercise, and any kind of activities.

Irene··on Google Chrome blocks access to PLOS-ONE.
It's not only Chrome, Firefox blocks it too: "This web page at www.plosone.org has been reported as an attack page and has been blocked based on your security preferences." Still works on Safari and IE.
Irene··on Origin of intelligence, mental illness linked to ancient genetic accident
Here's the link to the original publication: http://www.nature.com/neuro/journal/vaop/ncurrent/full/nn.32... You can ask Seth Grant (sg3@sanger.ac.uk) or Tim Bussey (tjb1000@cam.ac.uk) for a preprint

“If we listened to our intellect, we'd never have a love affair. We'd never have a friendship. We'd never go into business, because we'd be cynical. Well, that's nonsense. You've got to jump off cliffs all the time and build your wings on the way down.”
Irene··on Why I quit medicine
Kyro, your Hackermed was a nice attempt to bring together those interested in health-related innovation.

As to the OP, there's still a room to improve existing software technologies. And there is still a lack of consensus about best ways for improving handoff processes: http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/jcaho/jcjqs/2010/00000...

Irene··on Ask HN: Validate my startup idea, Kickstarter for Academic research
Social networking tools for scientists have not been really successful so far.

There are charities collecting money for research. And there are rich donors giving money to specific groups in academic institutions. Charities would probably appreciate more traffic and exposure but there are google adword grants for non-profits and other channels they can use.

Regarding fundamental, curiosity-driven science - it might be too expensive to be crowdfunded. The use of citizen-science networks might be more realistic.

Irene··on Ask HN: Validate my startup idea, Kickstarter for Academic research
Researchers are already using kickstarter, kiva and other sites to fund their projects. Why a new site?

Irene··on Ask HN: Has anyone worked through Maven.co (not .com)
No. If I need to find an expert, there are better ways than using this site.
Irene··on Betty Weissman (mother of edw519) 1930-2011
So sorry to hear of your loss. What a beautiful and touching tribute. May all mothers live long, very long
Irene··on Bing Beats Google On Search Effectiveness
Bing and Yahoo yield higher "percentage of search queries that result in a visit to a website". I often use google's built-in calculator, flight status and definition queries. This means I am "finding relevant information" without finding a website. Does it make google less efficient? I do not think so.

Irene··on Ask HN: Is Music Bad For Concentration?
According to several studies in cognitive psychology, introverts and heavy multitaskers perform less well in the presence of music (especially ‘pop music’) than extraverts. Music seems to be especially distracting for introverts involved in reading comprehension activities. Coding tasks are slightly less affected.
