Ir0nMan··on Is college worth it? A return-on-investment analysis
You missed the point.

The studying is not the problem anyone is talking about. People should study anything and everything they desire. The problem being addressed is spending a lot of money and taking out massive loans in order to study.

If you want to study Art, by all means definitely study Art. Just do not borrow $100,000 to do it.

Ir0nMan··on Is college worth it? A return-on-investment analysis
"At Harvard University, students who major in ethnic and gender studies can expect an ROI of negative $47,000. The film and photographic arts program at the University of Pennsylvania has an ROI of negative $140,000. Seventeen different programs at New York University have negative ROI, with the worst among them (music) leaving students over $500,000 in the hole."

The degree program you choose is what matters. You could go to the best school on the planet but if you are studying Gender Studies you are likely better off watching YouTube and buying lottery tickets.

Ir0nMan··on Ask HN: How to Reach a Human at Instagram
A friend of mine last week had their Instagram "hacked" and the "hacker" was able to modify their email and phone number so now they have no way to even attempt recovery. There of course is no way to contact any human at Instagram. The account is now spamming crypto related spam to all followers. It would be immediately obvious to any human that this account was compromised.

Most interesting is that the Instagram help docs are not even accurate when followed. One specific example is that they mention in part "If you don’t receive a security code, tap I can’t access this email or phone number below Send Security Code, then follow the on-screen instructions." It turns out there is no text or mention of "I can't access this email or phone number" at all that shows up. The docs are just plain wrong.

Ir0nMan··on Ask HN: Best way to host a website for 500 years?
This is the actual answer.
Ir0nMan··on YouTube: filmmakers presumed guilty until maybe proven innocent
>Is there any competing service that has a model similar to YouTube?

No.

Ir0nMan··on Wall Street Could Get Four Bitcoin Futures ETFs by Month-End
It's unfortunate that these ETF's track the price of Bitcoin Futures and not the actual spot price of Bitcoin. It will be interesting to see how they trade in the first few months and how well they do at actually tracking the price movement of Bitcoin.
Ir0nMan··on U.S. Government already projects $1T deficit every year for the next 10 years [pdf]
Because gov spending is not limited to only that which has a positive economic return. If it was we wouldn't have this problem.
Ir0nMan··on Google keyword warrants give U.S. government data on search users
This only applies to "Web Activity" and "Location History" which you can also just turn off completely instead of the "auto delete every x months" option.
Ir0nMan··on Big Tech are supposed to be the plumbers, not patricians of internet discourse
Until recently I thought we already settled this:

-People you believe are saying true things get to speak.

-People you believe are saying false things get to speak.

-People you believe are saying nice things get to speak.

-People you believe are saying mean things get to speak.

Everyone gets to speak. Individuals get to decide.

Ir0nMan··on Ask HN: What is your favourite stocks/options trading platform?
Desktop Trading: TDAmeritrade.

Mobile Trading: E-Trade.

Ir0nMan··on We’re no longer naming suspects in minor crime stories
Are you sure? I looked into this claim last year and it didn't seem to hold up. As far as I can tell, looking at both FBI and wider media stats, each year white individuals (and white males) seem to be the minority of mass shooters. My theory is that people making this claim are confusing the terms "mass shooter" with "school shooter" and the first category is more than 10 times larger than the second category.
Ir0nMan··on The Fed's Digital Dollar Would Be 'Nightmareville' for Privacy
I always feel like I'm missing something when the term "unbanked" is used. As far as I can tell, there are people that have opened a bank account and there are people that have not opened a bank account. It seems odd to call the second category of people "the unbanked" as it implies they are being prevented from getting a bank account when in fact they can get a bank account at any time.
Ir0nMan··on Day One, the Journaling App, Joins Automattic
>I think they also own or owned Tumblr

Automattic currently owns Tumblr.

Ir0nMan··on Moving my home media library from iTunes to Jellyfin and Infuse
>But do you _really_ own all of your media

Yes, 100%. The media is stored locally on your own hard drive. Plex is just the player.

Ir0nMan··on Apple shut down my iCloud account for five days, no warning, no explanation
+1 for UNRAID.
Ir0nMan··on A New Future for Icanhazip
To be fair, I think OP's suggestion was more like blocking "incoming" traffic from China.
Ir0nMan··on Home ownership is the West’s biggest economic-policy mistake
Imagine a system where renters could put up a small fee, say 3-5% of the homes value, then just continue paying their monthly "rent" payment as usual. However, each time they pay that monthly rent a portion of that payment goes directly to them as equity. That way years later they could move and benefit from that equity position or after a certain period of time, say 30 years, own the entire home outright.

Oh wait...

Ir0nMan··on Latest Mozilla VPN features
4.99 USD vs 5 Euro (5.87 USD) would make Mozilla VPN 15% cheaper than Mullvad.

Ir0nMan··on Texas lawyer trapped by cat filter on Zoom call, informs judge he is not a cat
"I don’t know how to remove it … I’m here live. I’m not a cat."
Ir0nMan··on Jeff Bezos would owe $2B a year in state taxes if Washington passes wealth tax
It sounds like you don't know how wealth works. This is a tax on assets. Bezos wealth is from the fact that he owns a large amount of Amazon stock. It's paper wealth. He would have to sell his Amazon stock to get the money. It's not cash sitting in a bank account.
Ir0nMan··on How do I safely store my files?
I'm well aware of ZFS and have used it many times. To noobs the world can be separated into "RAID" and "non-RAID" type setups. UNRAID (non-RAID) offers much more drive flexibility which makes it cheaper to start and add to over time compared to ZFS.

Ir0nMan··on Robinhood in a tough position as it faces a wave of lawsuits over GameStop saga
They should have just been honest about the situation from the start: "We were caught without enough capital to settle all your trades, we are sorry and will do better next time".

Instead they made it seem like they were protecting traders and doing them a favor. They didn't have enough cash on hand to settle trades and meet the capital requirements. They messed up on that front and are in the process of fixing that with additional investment from their wealthy shareholders.

It may be too late however as everyone I know that did trade on RH is now in the process of migrating to another more established brokerage.

Ir0nMan··on How do I safely store my files?
Yes, because of the drive flexibility. FreeNAS uses traditional RAID.
Ir0nMan··on How do I safely store my files?
I will take this opportunity to highly recommend UNRAID. You can use an old computer, add in some internal hard drives, and boot it off a USB stick.

Drives can be added or subtracted at any time so the system grows as your data grows and unlike traditional RAID you can mix and match drives of different types and sizes. Because it is not a real RAID implementation you can pull out any data drive in your array and read the files residing on that drive in another system. Data is protected against drive failure by single or dual parity drives and using SSD's for caching is even supported.

For anyone that is mildly technically inclined and enjoys DIY solutions, I would recommend at least checking out UNRAID before purchasing a Synology NAS (or similar).

Ir0nMan··on Linux distributors frustrated by Google's new Chromium web browser restrictions
Chromium is used over Chrome because the Google integration of Chrome is not desirable. If you are going to then sign into a Google account in Chromium you might as well just use Chrome. This entire story seems like a non issue.

Chromium without any Google integrations seems like the exact point of Chromium in the first place.

Ir0nMan··on Firefox Relay
Owning your own domain name for email and running your own email server are two completely different discussions. The first is recommended while the second is not.
Ir0nMan··on Offbase: Static site generator in a browser
