InafuSabi··on I stopped to watch kids playing at recess – security was called
I am sad to read how you have had to experience these horrific scenes of extreme paranoia.

Please, keep spreading the good energy

THe cops are wise enough to have entries in their journals to know its again a false report against a good man, playing with his legal own children

InafuSabi··on 1Password for Linux
I had to reduce #Lastpass importance here, when they crippled the multiple plaform usability so my natural choice was #Bitwarden. THe fact that they are open source and will not pull such a stunt as lastpass did was vital for me.

Lastpass is now reduced to usage on linux machines, while bitwarden superceeds it on all platforms, even when new ones come in the future

InafuSabi··on My NAS exposes itself over the internet without permission
There are ISP's out there which disallow the use of gateways other than theirs to enter their WAN. That means you are stuck with whatever config it allows.

I have root access to mine, so I can configure it to my liking, but the device is _not_ blinking out in quality, needing to be reset at least once every 14 days, otherwise it starts chocking when I need to transmit my radio stations over the NET

These type of ISP's make a lot of cash, selling bulk purchased cheap hardware, esp mine, which still sells services over copper using VDSL & ADSL2. Their FTTH speeds are also inconveniently capped on VDSL speeds

InafuSabi··on It took two days to develop Moderna’s vaccine
Also taking into account that often the balance between spreading the disease and letting people work to feed themselves and loved ones is a massive challenge.

In my country we have destroyed economiy due to 10 years of incompetent greedy politics which had killed it already. People are out of work because of that.

Now the pandemic has made sure no one will recover at an acceptable rate, because new politicians also struggle to find the balance.

At this side of the planet we are screwed at such a hard rate, its amazing I can still feed myself, pay utilities and internet and be medically insured

InafuSabi··on How io_uring and eBPF Will Revolutionize Programming in Linux
A friend of mine was amazed by this capability of the Amiga when I showed him that on one screen I could play mod.DasBoot in NoiseTracker, pull the screen down partly then go on the BBS in the terminal by manually dialing atdt454074 and entering, without my A500 even skipping one beat...

All I had was the 512kB expander, he had a 386 with 387 and could only run a single tasking OS

InafuSabi··on αcτµαlly pδrταblε εxεcµταblε
Great memories you brought back. Minicom times were so simple, the BBS sysop dialed upr2.clu.net for us so we had a nice UUCP connection and got our mails pushed out.

I had to undergo the same chicken egg situation with uudecode

InafuSabi··on Don't close your MacBook with a cover over the camera
Only hard switches can guarantee blocks to equipment. Any soft switch can be overridden.

I use electrical isolation tape on all cams pointed at me, always on androids & even on linux notebooks.

I always physically disconnect mics I dont use, if in notebooks I put a blob on removable glue on them

InafuSabi··on Curl Wttr.in
Thank you very much for sharing this info. Now I can use wttr.in in a varied manner
InafuSabi··on Radio Garden – Explore live radio by rotating the globe
Thank you very much for this great interface to online terrestrial radio!
InafuSabi··on Tell HN: Call Mom
phone calls (POTS voice) are better than text, thats not only my opinion, but also for those on the receiving end of the call
InafuSabi··on Tell HN: Call Mom
Over here having contact with mom, evern briefly, every day is quite normal
InafuSabi··on Tell HN: Call Mom
Regrets are hard. No one knows how yours feel and getting over them is almost impossible. Sending you some Universal Love
InafuSabi··on Show HN: Twitch Roulette – Find and chat with streamers who are streaming alone
Proper attitude. I run radio based streams. That means I always have to work with 100% concentration on _mixer_ / twitch. Even though I leave the metrics on, the work is always done for a (fictional) audience, otherwise the quality of my recording suffers (I record all my live session with audacity)

I stream for artistic expression, BTW so an audience or not matters little

InafuSabi··on An Illustrated Guide to Useful Command Line Tools
I don't think its old fashioned at all, the arguments are solid. It's just like `uname -a` works under freeBSD, linux, darwin et all. The standard tools rule supreme IMHO.
InafuSabi··on How the Dat Protocol Works
Beaker browser misses some simple stuff like dark themes which makes it look weird in my dark themed desktop manager. If anyone can point me to that, I will play more with it.
InafuSabi··on Is this Paypal experience customary?
I will just keep using them for micro transactions, What you write there is just horrific. People could get a beatdown for less aggrevation.

I never got actual confirmation that paypal is really as bad as some people casually mentioned

InafuSabi··on The Cost of JavaScript in 2019
https://old.reddit.com is the only way to look at that site.

Reddit new style also eats way more cpu cycles than needed, which is very important when you visit the site on potato hardware

InafuSabi··on Brave Improves Its Ad-Blocker Performance with New Engine in Rust
Can you give Brave your own dir of install in win64? Thats the only thing from stopping me to use it on my streaming #DAW since it has a small SSD, which I refuse to install non-critical software on.

Over here brave just dumps itself on c: in win64

InafuSabi··on Microsoft Flight Simulator
I know flight simulator with the Piper Cherokee Archer from the C64, coded by SubLogic laggy as hell with 3 secs input delays
InafuSabi··on I’m not really a good web developer, I'm just good at Googling things
Love this article. THe programmer is honest and teaches us, some handy things. The ability to work well with a good search-engine is vital, esp when you need to spew out good code.

Re-inventing the wheel is out.

Standing on the shoulders of giants is in, just like Isaac Newton did it centuries ago

InafuSabi··on The new Dropbox
I would do selfhosting:

big with https://www.freenas.org/

small with https://freedombox.org/

scaling with https://nextcloud.com/

If you cant do any self hosting https://nextcloud.com/ can be paid for. THere is a demo here https://demo.nextcloud.com/

InafuSabi··on I didn't get paid, so I open-sourced my client’s project
Correct move. Only you know your bankpass, even the machine generating it `forgets` after the printout
InafuSabi··on Google Just Gave 2B Chrome Users a Reason to Switch to Firefox
I've downloaded firefox ESR and am migrating my important addons to firefox equivalents. Up to now all of them, apart from _authy_ (a crucial one) have native versions.

For me extentions like _uBlock Origin BitWarden_ & _LastPass_ are vital

Now I have to look if the latest incarnations are not as CPU hungry as the ones that forced me to stop in 2013.

If it is good on this ageing #DAW, I have my response to google's FU to us, their users

Update: Firefox still uses much more CPU on my machine, that will create a problem when google pushes their crap through our throats

InafuSabi··on A Rocket Built by Students Reaches Space
A wonderfull achievement, these students made.

The fact that it has taken the university _years_ to reach the goal combined with the solid fuel systems, which is less complex (but _not_ simple), shows the determination to have another group of non-pro's to reach that coveted altitude.

InafuSabi··on Ask HN: How did you adapt to a rapidly-growing startup?
Getting more colleagues means getting direct accessable peers within your field. THat can only be a boon.

If you were not needed, you would have been let go already. Just do your work as you are used to from the beginning, keep learning new things and be as flexible as a gymnast when it comes to learning. THat will make you more valuable.

InafuSabi··on Why MIT uses Python instead of Scheme for its undergraduate CS program (2009)
I had not coded in a long time. Not written any type of helloworld.c in years (more than a decade) I've recently updated and wedged in a programming ENV: on the machine I spent most time on these days.

I say wedged because IMHO programming env's are the easiest to setup and maintain in POSIX OS's. This closed source OS I'm most in (because I stream simulations & games on this DAW) is not really suited for it.

One of the 1st languages I installed was python. For me the reason is a nice Raspberry PI I got from a friend of mine, but most of all the accessability of the language on literally all OS's you can throw a stick at.

Another reason is

  python -v -m SimpleHTTPServer 8088
amazing, when you run it in verbose mode
InafuSabi··on 911 emergency services go down across the US after CenturyLink outage
> After a couple emergencies where communication was identified as a big issue, they proposed moving back to the old radio system, but they had already sold off the frequencies

This is one of those cases where, if it isn't broke dont fix it was a rule to be followed.

Now its hard for the company to fallback to the old system, since they need to buy another set of frequencies, before they can even plan to rebuild the radio tower network.

Since they had stopped with the good running radio network to cut costs (unwise since it ran fantastic) the chance that they will invest in restarting such a network is not really big, unless they get heavy lossses due to their unreliable current system of modern (but worthless) gadgetry
