IYasha··on How and Why I Stopped Buying New Laptops (2020)
Lol! Finding a bunch of good 18650s is WAY easier than a freaking proprietary black bar. Replacing them requires some skill, though, but most repair shops can or know who can do it properly.
IYasha··on How and Why I Stopped Buying New Laptops (2020)
> New laptops may be more energy-efficient per computational power, but these gains are offset by more computational power.

Should I rephrase: computers are getting ridiculously powerful, but JavaScript cancels out everything? Or just low-quality software in general.

PS: I'm using 2014 laptop and only wish WWW wasn't such heavy garbage.

IYasha··on FBI: Largest homemade explosives cache in agency history found in Virginia
What a freaking snitch! That rat of a neighbor.
IYasha··on Passkey technology is elegant, but it's most definitely not usable security
How about every site and service let me use my username+password combination and stop bothering me with 2-3-4-5FA bullshit? I can manage my own passwords, thank you!
IYasha··on From Pegasus to Predator – The evolution of commercial spyware on iOS [video]
Fortunately, they are aware of the problem and made an announcement:

>> We are aware of audio issues, especially during talks of day 1 (2024-12-27). Some talks have been released in a preview-version, but are still being worked on behind the scenes.

IYasha··on From Pegasus to Predator – The evolution of commercial spyware on iOS [video]
Yeah, it's not the first time they have sound problems. Really frustrating, especially for non-native speakers.

I was going to blame wireless mics, but they seem to be fixed?..

IYasha··on Lua is so underrated
Scripting language with the worst syntax I've seen so far.
IYasha··on Cable-cutting tanker seized by Finland 'was loaded with spying equipment'
Reading comments on this article makes me want to wash my eyes.
IYasha··on C++ is an absolute blast
I can't believe I can agree this much with a C++ article. My thoughts precisely. But whenever _I_ brought up the crazy angle-brackets::madness period in language's history, most devs tended to disagree. I rarely follow fads anyway.

But there's a downside to C++ as I still see it now: steep learning curve in tooling. I am used to work on legacy projects with long lifespan (mostly infinite, not that I look at it :) ) and kinda got lost when tried to contribute to a modern project (I'd call it a hipster project): the amount of abstractions in build/management tools was terrifying.

CMake, for example, is and abstraction over an abstraction above another abstraction. And they used an abstraction over CMake! It also required Python. And not the one available in my OS.

I admit, I'm more used to cursed MSVC projects and simple Makefiles. But when CMake starts its dirty work, it's like a black hole of weird scripting and endless pulling of hopefully compatible dependencies you can hardly control (yeah, where does MSVS store that pulled and precompiled garbage? Oh, shi- it's in %userappdata%??? what about other users? What if I want it on a different drive, like MY project?). CMakeLists.txt has a syntax of it's own, and a really obscure one: is it declarative? Are those commands? When does the order of lines matter? Why are CMakes so incompatible? What are those vars? How is any of that online documentation useful? How do I make things work as I want?? And it still doesn't because some required repos have moved, are offline or became incompatible.

The infrastructure surrounding my helloworld.cpp was getting SO immense, but it never built as... in the end I was required to upgrade to Windows 10 or 11, which I'd never do, so... This is the sad non-C++ part of C++ programming that I utterly hate.

IYasha··on Why we use our own hardware
Very, very reasonable! And the HDD vs. SSD part is just reading my thoughts. :)
IYasha··on Sci-fi inspired antenna adjusts to signal needs
Not very practical, imo:

1. antennas must withstand major changes of ambient temperatures, direct sunlight, humidity and many other factors. How would one maintain nitinol in desired shape? Which prompts the next question:

2. how does it maintain efficiency? the heating needs energy, so antenna won't be passive - okay. But motorized lifting mechanism that only draws power when change of shape is happening might be a better idea.

I once recorded and made a GIF out of it :D :_D :_(

IYasha··on Tell HN: Need help, locked out of Google account with 10 years of personal data
Provided you're in the same coutry as the registrar and using your passport for registration. And you don't miss your pay date (they usually don't allow to pre-pay for many years in advance). And payment remains available (I once had to resort to paying with cash(!) because of banking troubles). And registrar doesn't get bought, go bankrupt, etc. After losing an important domain I can't say it's THE way to go. Also, self-hosting e-mail is a nightmare. Not only because of ridiculously complex software, but also need to be trusted, which, in e-mail world, is hard as...
IYasha··on Tell HN: Need help, locked out of Google account with 10 years of personal data
Hey there, mate! Can't really do a thing, but I'm here for emotional support. You won't believe how many of us are here. :(

In my case Google refused working secondary e-mail link, secret word, current password - all of those. Probably just because my IP address changed. And my gmail and YouTube channel are now lost forever with no explanation. (I had no mobile number attached to it)

IYasha··on OpenWRT One Released: First Router Designed Specifically for OpenWrt
In my case, 410G + 241G switch fulfills needs of a home LAN in a typical house/apartment. To have it running some FOSS OS would be a dream.
IYasha··on Chinese companies poach staff from ASML and Zeiss with three times higher pay
Not really news to me: at least one certain well-known telecom company was scouting specialists from all over the world (from US to EU and Russia) and bombarding them with astronomical salaries. I'm not saying no one used this tactic before China. It's centuries old. But in this case those engineers or scientists are super-rare (unique), extremely valuable and desired. So, in multi-billion strategic industry it's worth paying triple for them.

But, I guess, it takes unbelievable amount of loyalty/patriotism to stay when you're offered so much..

IYasha··on Truly portable C applications
I assume this technique will work on read-only media like CDs or ROMs (patches itself in RAM)?
IYasha··on TIL: Some surprising code execution sources in bash
I'd be happy with AngelScript or smth. Hard-typed, but interpretable. But not Python[-like]. I'd kill it with SIGFIRE.
IYasha··on TIL: Some surprising code execution sources in bash
I have a related question: is integer/"((math))" logic really safer (in bash) than "[normal]"? I usually try hard to use declare -i iMyVar; as many applicable variables as possible. But evaluation of strings is still usually a hellhole... I mean hole hell.
IYasha··on The Leningrad botanists who saved the first seed bank
Almost cried while reading this. I knew the story vaguely, but those details...
IYasha··on Half-Life 2: 20th Anniversary Update
HL1 is also good for a hobby, if not better. There are open-source alternatives to the engine and better editors, and the off-steam community still delivers!
IYasha··on Half-Life 2: 20th Anniversary Update
For those living under rock (me): did they finally update the HL1 SDK to catch up with HL1 Anniversary edition? I was really anticipating lots of positive changes, but kind of lost track in the chaos of life.
IYasha··on Visual Basic 6 IDE recreated in C#
I wish someone recreated the fast and reliable VS/VC 6.0. It was so blazingly fast and.. just good. I was SO disappointed with slow and bloated MS .NET BS that I ditched VS entirely.
IYasha··on Intel's Day of Reckoning Arrives: 15,000 Jobs Will Be Eliminated
Flashy things production, obviously. (In industry we call them "presentations")
IYasha··on China is slowly joining the economic war against Russia?
I rarely comment, but I'm really tired of political articles on HN.
IYasha··on Back dating Git commits based on file modification dates
Misread the title thinking someone invented nerdy dating service on github. But it's not that. Disappointed.
IYasha··on CISA publishes 447 page draft of cyber incident reporting rule
And I'm struggling to get users to read the freaking 4 pages of README.txt... (of which only one is really critical for installation) facepalm
IYasha··on Command injection and backdoor account in D-Link NAS devices
Most likely - ANY (even business-class) device, not limited to storage, is prone to this, unfortunately. Most terrifying of which are routers, mobile phones and home security cams/doorbells/etc.

IYasha··on Command injection and backdoor account in D-Link NAS devices
Yeah it's not even surprising - does ANYONE in their right mind go through all their gadgets/home appliances to check their EOL status?? The whole reason for buying a completely set up and ready to go device that you don't configure yourself is to "put it and forget it". And that is the part when manufacturers screw you. (I myself am running 10+yo hardware and pretty happy about it.)
