INGSOCIALITE··on An update on salary transparency in job posts
That’s what I’ve seen as well, it’s always a range with a huuuuuge gap. No one is posting the actual expected salary. It’s almost a scam, I could post a job listing with a salary of “$0 to $1,000,000,000.00”. It’s the same as not posting a salary number at all
INGSOCIALITE··on Nuclear Conversion for Starship
why aren't they just researching the creation of dilithium crystals?

With modern tech I should never have any identifier that doesn’t change whatsoever. Mac,ip,etc should randomize every nth second lol
INGSOCIALITE··on United Airlines plans to board passengers with window seats first
lol the inevitable guy with the huge hockey bag that fills the entire bin is on every single flight
INGSOCIALITE··on United Airlines plans to board passengers with window seats first
At this point in time, “pre boarding” (military, babies, elderly, “10k and platinum members” , global elite, etc) is about 50% of the airplane

And that’s not even group 1

INGSOCIALITE··on Think in Analog, Capture in Digital
if you're an iPhone user I made a shortcut to call org-capture and integrate with your regular emacs/org-mode installations: https://blog.samhain.io/posts/org-capture-shortcut/

the caveat is that you need to keep your org folder in iCloud. I have a symlink on my MacBook from ~/org to ~/Library/Mobile Documents/com~apple~CloudDocs ... then I can access my org folder from my iPhone as well.

INGSOCIALITE··on Ask HN: Best tools for self-authoring books in 2023?
I use emacs + org-mode + ox-latex (with custom formatting) - then I use bookbaby to print the actual physical books - this is for a textbook I publish
INGSOCIALITE··on Show HN: Use your familiar Markdown editor to create and publish web pages
emacs + org-mode + ox-hugo Works perfectly for me!

Mullvad lets you pay with monero- or cash in an envelope.
INGSOCIALITE··on Burning money on paid ads for a dev tool – what we've learned
People are going to hate it just because it’s an ad that they don’t want to see while scrolling their feeds. You could have the greatest product on earth and simply because it’s an advertisement it will receive negative feedback, and snarky replies.

Advertising on social media platforms is horrendous - no one wants to see an ad, ever, for any product or service. You’re already at a disadvantage by being the source of the end user’s ire, so winning them over is extra hard.

INGSOCIALITE··on ProtonMail Complied with 5,957 Data Requests in 2022 – Still Secure and Private?
Why is the recovery email forced? Cant this be an option if the user wants to have one saved when signing up?
INGSOCIALITE··on ProtonMail Complied with 5,957 Data Requests in 2022 – Still Secure and Private?
Well they double pinky promise, of course
INGSOCIALITE··on $HOME, not so sweet $HOME
Everyone should do what emacs does (and a lot of software does): first look for .emacs for a config … not there? Check .emacs.d … still not there? .config/emacs …
INGSOCIALITE··on I would rather see my books get pirated than this
Sweet water is great - they even have a dedicated rep call you a little after your order arrives to make sure you’re happy with the product and that it’s just what you wanted.

Plus they send you candy

INGSOCIALITE··on A list of recent hostile moves by Google's Chrome team
> What difference do you see between a browser and an OS? A browser is an OS. They perform the same role. A context to run whatever 3rd party software.

This is where everything has gone screwy. A browser should only be rendering and displaying html files. Browsers should be minuscule in size, and /definitely/ not run any 3rd party software.

INGSOCIALITE··on FCC allows blocking traffic from robocall-friendly provider One Owl

INGSOCIALITE··on Run Llama 2 uncensored locally
I would rather an actual response to the question as opposed to some horrible gatekeeping…

“When did Lisa Simpson get her first saxophone”

“In season X episode X of the simpsons television show”

Why is an answer like this so hard? We know Daffy Duck and Lisa Simpson obviously are not real people and nothing that happens in a book or cartoon or movie is real, but come on already…

INGSOCIALITE··on Congress Looks for Answers on UFO Sightings
It’s just misdirection, the old magicians trick they always do. News about ufo or aliens is going to grab everyone’s attention. Make it seem credible with congressional involvement. Take all eyes off the real news and onto the charade.
INGSOCIALITE··on Kids Online Safety Act is still a danger to our rights online
It’s infuriating that when they make these bills that they KNOW will rile people up and cause protest, they give them a “won’t you think of the children” name “kids online safety act”… now when you say it’s no good and needs to be modified or fought, you look like an absolute monster who doesn’t care about kids or their online safety.

These acts should be given a number as a title. The intent of the act or bill should be clearly stated in line 1, and the act or bill itself should be required to ONLY facilitate that intent.

INGSOCIALITE··on People in 1920s Berlin nightclubs flirted via pneumatic tubes (2017)
I can’t reply to the post below yours for some reason so I’ll hijack here…

INGSOCIALITE··on All foster kids in California can now attend any state college for free
This is exactly correct. Fairness and equality.
INGSOCIALITE··on Ask HN: Alternatives to Stripe?
Because here it’s public and they want to save face. When it’s private they dgaf because it doesn’t affect other potential or current clients who might be swayed away from them
INGSOCIALITE··on Stable Diffusion WebGPU demo
People don’t code for performance. Every application is built on top of “framework” bloat.

Remember when people would boast about how little lines of code their program had or how little memory their programs used?

INGSOCIALITE··on Stable Diffusion WebGPU demo
I agree with the poster 100%. Im convinced any Google applications immediately suck every iota of data they possibly can at install time / first launch. It’s not worth it to me either.
INGSOCIALITE··on The businessmen broke Hollywood
They can have as many gay characters as they want in any movie and it wouldn’t matter. Hell it probably wouldn’t even come up. But once it becomes the characters ENTIRE identity and only character trait, it does seem a bit preachy.

INGSOCIALITE··on Thunderbird 115 “Supernova”
Ah! I misinterpreted. Yes all of the accounts have to be “added” prior to this functionality in Apple mail. I stand corrected
INGSOCIALITE··on Thunderbird 115 “Supernova”
I can do this from Apple mail, I have multiple accounts on the same domain, and other domains. I even have an exchange account added, any email I send I can just click the “from” field and pick any of my emails or domains from the dropdown
