IGotThroughIt··on Saudi sovereign-wealth fund backs Travis Kalanick’s new startup
> especially the Uber from a few years back

Would you say you liked it better then compared to now?

Okay. That's so serendipitous and hilarious.
IGotThroughIt··on Microsoft’s web-based version of Visual Studio
No I haven't due to time constraints. I was just disappointed and uninstalled to free up space. I will be getting some time off soon so I will reinstall and log the issues.

Was not aware of this. Very good to know.

Noticed it almost instantly and edited. You probably didn't see the edit due to hn's caching.

I'll admit this, I was wrong about Satya. I didn't think Microsoft was salvageable but he's been doing a stellar job. He's a great CEO and embracing open source was a really good move.

I shifted to VSCode from atom (before they purchased github) due to atom's memory hogging issues a while back. Haven't regretted the choice. For my private repos, I used to only use the free version of bitbucket but Microsoft introduced free private repos to github so I've been trying that out lately. If I like it, I'll stick with it.

Also, all my code is hosted on Azure now from AWS since late last year.

I tried WSL but didn't like it to due problems with paths but at this rate with which they're moving, it too might improve and I might find myself using only Microsoft for my work. Would not have predicted that if you asked me a few years back when I couldn't run away from Ms/Windows environment fast enough.

Top APIs I've enjoyed working with:

1. Stripe (Best)

2. Twilio

3. Twitter (Does what it needs to do quickly)

4. Puppeteer (Amazing. Was super helpful.)

5. Google (mostly ok but could be better)

APIs I've hated working with:

1. Paypal (the worst - docs are horrible and UI is not consistent with most of the help material out there because it changes all the time. Have you tried their support? That's a beauty)

2. Facebook (same story but manageable compared to paypal)

IGotThroughIt··on Is Anyone Going to Get Rich Off of Email Newsletters?
I am only subscribed to 2 newsletters one of which is by Trevor McKendrick - VP at Lambda school(YC). It's probably one of the few newsletters I'd actually pay for. It's sent out every Monday morning so that's something I look forward to when starting my week. It contains nice information about entrepreneurship, myths of founder stories and other related things.

> I proceeded to click the "unsubscribe" link in one of them, but to my surprise the spam kept coming.

I despise it when this happens. The only solution is to create a gmail filter to catch the entire domain and archive it or mark it as spam. It's surprising how many companies willfully ignore the unsubscribe option.

Would you say the socialist policies of the government have had a negative effect or a positive effect on the country's economy? In your opinion as a resident, does this play at all into why things are the way they are economically?

IGotThroughIt··on France and Germany Agree to Block Facebook's Libra
A lot of wealthy people do that. It isn't as straight forward though. It would be nice to be able to do so on the internet and for smaller amounts.
IGotThroughIt··on France and Germany Agree to Block Facebook's Libra
Indeedy. My country has 7% inflation. And that calculation is done by the very state that is responsible for inflation so their word on this only means so much. Any other currency or store of value that solves this is more than welcome.
IGotThroughIt··on France and Germany Agree to Block Facebook's Libra
That's because they have a clear way on how to stop facebook while they don't really know how to stop decentralized crypto (whose whole point is to resist state interference).
IGotThroughIt··on I Lost My $50k Twitter Username (2014)
Funny, I never thought of a longer TTL as one solution to this kind of security problem. Interesting.

How safe are all these plugins we install to escape tracking? Are we trying to escape big tech tracking only to hand our information over to extension developers? Looking at network traffic often shows a ton of extensions sending data to some aws server almost perpetually.

Asking because I'm not sure of the answer to this question and lately I've become even warier so I decided to uninstall everything except things I absolutely must have like colorzilla, grammarly and full-page screen capture. For adblocking I use brave and never ever touch firefox, opera or chrome.

There's an extension that appends a share=1 parameter to all quora links to prevent them from forcing you to sign in in order to view a post. I like it but I'm trying to minimize my extensions footprint and I'd rather write my own script to perform the same script.

The question is, how do you get to be sure that an extension is safe?

> Food delivery is ubiquitous in my country (its cheaper than cooking for me, if you account time wasted).

Any chance you use dabbawalas? I saw that on BBC and it was such an amazing informal logistics network.

> Where I live there is no difference between taxi and Uber.

That's one of the problems that ride apps solve - ubiquity of service. No matter where you go in the world - and I come from a very remote place so I should know this - uber is there and it sometimes even delivers food for less than a dollar and in about 1 hour!!!

Taxis on the other hand don't always have apps and can't bring you goods like food.

IGotThroughIt··on Uber and Lyft Investors Are Looking for Signs of a Détente
> same rates

No problem. Cabs still suck compared to ride apps. It's not even a comparison that's fair to make under your stated conditions. That I can summon a ride at any time, any place and have a near accurate estimate of the cost so I can plan ahead and not have to negotiate with the driver (happens sometimes) is way better anyway.

IGotThroughIt··on Uber and Lyft Investors Are Looking for Signs of a Détente
True but not everyone does it well. Almost everyone sucks at it - long waits, poor selection in terms of product range and sometimes even apps that simply don't work as intended. It's going to take a large player with a wide network to get it done well. There are so many players in the space who've closed shop and will continue to do so. Only a few (2 or 3) will stay put and actually get the job done.

Uber eats is their golden egg. I think it was Stripe's Collison who said that their cohort of businesses - stripe, lift, uber et al - need to first build out their ecosystems then once done, a plethora of other business opportunities will emerge and that's where the profits will emerge from. For instance what uber eats is to uber, atlas and radar are to stripe.
