ID1452319··on Why smartwatch-measured blood pressure still isn’t ‘ready for primetime’ (2021)
I never knew that, thanks. So when the machine ramps up the pressure, then ramps up some more, then some more, you know you're in trouble?
ID1452319··on Ask HN: What do you pay for your internet connection, and where do you live?
UK (not London) £35.50 per month for 75/25Mbps Sky "fibre"
ID1452319··on BBC apologises after 'Manchester United are rubbish' appears on screen
I thought it was a direct quote from Erik ten Hag after observing his first training session
ID1452319··on Bolt Built $11B Payment Business on Inflated Metrics and Eager Investors
I've read that whole article and I'm still no clearer as to what they actually do. I understand Amazon's "one-click" technology, as Amazon already has all my address and payment details saved.

Am I therefore expected to create an account with Bolt so they can store my details and offer a "one-click" experience on downstream e-comm sites? How is this different to what PayPal offer, especially given PayPal is ubiquitous?

ID1452319··on Long-Chain Omega-3 Fatty Acids Improve Brain Function, Structure in Older Adults (2014)
The article mentions a dose of 2.2g/day LC-n3-FA, whereas a mackerel fillet contents 4g in one piece - therefore, it seems not.
ID1452319··on New York Times drops ‘fetus’ as an answer to Wordle – but not for all players
If I was cynical, I'd say this was an attempt to generate publicity for a game which is slowly falling out of fashion.
ID1452319··on Ask HN: Do managers make purchasing decisions based off Gartner’s Magic Quadrant
This times 1,000. The old adage "No one got fired for buying IBM" is alive and well in most companies.
ID1452319··on Netflix’s Big Wake-Up Call: The Power Clash Behind the Crash
An I reading that chart correctly? Netflix added 8.3M subscribers in Q4 2021, almost as many as the rest of 2021 combined (9.9M).

Yet a 200K fall in subscribers in Q1 2022 is somehow the death-knell for the company?

ID1452319··on OneWeb will resume satellite launches with SpaceX as the launch provider
Because the UK Govt and certain members of the British press talk this project up as 2) some kind of success for Brexit Britain and b) a potential replacement for Galileo, which Britain is no longer part of after leaving the EU.

There is A LOT of politics around OneWeb.

ID1452319··on OneWeb will resume satellite launches with SpaceX as the launch provider
The satellites are made in the USA, by, ironically, Airbus Space and Defence (who's largest shareholders are the French and German governments). OneWeb have said they will move manufacturing to the UK, but this was stated in a Select Committee meeting, so could well be simply blowing smoke up the collective 'arrises of their investors.
ID1452319··on Muscle strengthening lowers risk of death from all causes, study shows
This is what I always wonder about these studies. How do you differential people who do regular exercise with those who eat healthy? Clearly there is correlation between those.
ID1452319··on Ask HN: GDPR pop-ups are getting so annying, what should we do about it?
My understanding was that you need consent before storing or accessing information on user's devices.

ID1452319··on Ask HN: GDPR pop-ups are getting so annying, what should we do about it?
My understanding is that you must tell people if you set cookies for any purpose, regardless of whether they are collecting personal data. Therefore, pretty much any content management solution, Wordpress site etc. will need to display a cookie consent banner.
ID1452319··on Ask HN: Who's getting pulled back into the office?
My company (UK FMCG manufacturer) has been back in the office, five days a week, since last summer
ID1452319··on BBC cryptocurrency documentary pulled from air at last minute
This isn't even a story of success though. What due diligence did the BBC do to ensure he actually made that money and that he was using the methods claimed?

There are lots of people in social media who pose in front of expensive cars and with designer bag in order to sell their crypto or forex trading training courses. Most of course don't make their money from trading, but from commissions paid by platforms for winding in suckers.

ID1452319··on BBC cryptocurrency documentary pulled from air at last minute
People talk about misinformation on Facebook, but the British media are guilty of promoting criminals and fraudsters via news stories about their "success".

For example, my local newspaper published a number of articles about a "successful" trader who was offering training programmes. Last month he was sentenced to three years in prison for fraud.

There are numerous examples of this and even "reality" TV shows promoting these people as successful or rich, it is about time the media are held to account.

ID1452319··on Show HN: An AI that predicts how long a car will last
My own car only has one year left!

My wife keeps nagging me to buy a new car, maybe she's right.

ID1452319··on Web3 is not going to change the world
Can I ask how this has been solved? I see a number of companies in the HR domain offering "blockchain-based" solutions. However, it seems to be that the immutable nature of blockchain is incompatible with data protection regulation's right to be forgotten.
ID1452319··on Bored Ape NFT holders in limbo after steep OpenSea losses
Precisely. I thought blockchain was explicitly supposed to prevent this?
ID1452319··on Kia’s new EV6 electric crossover goes straight to the head of the pack
It is interesting how often a new EV "goes straight to the head of the pack". Even the article suggests the Hyundai Ioniq 5 "went straight to the top of the class" when it was tested late last year.

This for me is why I'm currently cool about EVs. The technology is moving forward so quickly that even in the space of a year you could be driving around in "old tech".

It feels to me as if EVs are currently at the Motorola Flip phone stage of their evolution, with a new car offering significant performance enhancements released every few months and a gamechanger, such as solid state batteries, just around the corner.

ID1452319··on Ask HN: What to do when you have your employer over a barrel?
So, did you deliver the update?
ID1452319··on Why isn't there a universal data format for résumés?
I agree that the tools provide that capability, but I have never seen them implemented anywhere, hence asking if anyone has first hand experience.
ID1452319··on Why isn't there a universal data format for résumés?
An Applicant Tracking System is just the industry term for recruitment software. Therefore, you'd expect every company to have one.

I can't see anything in that link that suggests those companies are doing automated CV parsing.

ID1452319··on Hackers disrupt payroll for thousands of employers, including hospitals
It was a merger between two companies called Ultimate and Kronos. Not great, but not really a scam.
ID1452319··on Why isn't there a universal data format for résumés?
Slightly off topic, but I have seen a number of comments mentioning "CV parsing". I implement HR technology for a living, which obviously includes recruitment solutions. I have never seen a company implement automated CV parsing, as in rejecting CVs which don't contain certain keywords.

Does anyone have first hand experience of working for a company which does implement automated CV parsing?

ID1452319··on Take-Two is acquiring mobile game giant Zynga for $12.7B

ID1452319··on Reddit service is disrupted as all clients face elevated errors
Two hours? Try ten years.
ID1452319··on Ask HN: How do you stay active while working from home?
Exactly. Going back to the office has killed all my progress. Not just my old exercise time being taken up with commuting, but all the temptation to eat junk food which I never even had in the house when I was WFH.
ID1452319··on Ask HN: How do you stay active while working from home?
I actually lost three stone during lockdown (between about this time last year and May 2021) and put it all back on again when I returned to the office (think nice cafe, crisps, chocolate, vending machines etc.)

Basically, when I was at home I planned everything I ate. Porridge for breakfast, homemade soup (a batch lasts four days) and bread for lunch and a proper dinner, such as a big batch of curry, chilli, stew (each lasts a few days ) plus veg.

I also exercised. I dusted down the old exercise bike and did 20 minutes most days followed by some basic calisthenics plank, pushups, airbike and crunches. I started with low numbers, so 60-seconds plank, 10 pushups, 15 airbikes, 20 crunches and then every added a few seconds/reps each day. Excel is your friend.

You'll be amazed at how much improvement you can achieve when it is structured over the space of a couple of weeks.
