IAmBroom··on How Singapore's government-run dating service works
The fault is in the assumption that "That 5% is static". There's zero proof behind that assertion.

If every man groomed himself and presented just "good" portraits and captures in his dating profile pics, that 5% would probably improve.

I'm a hetero man, but I've formed a fake female profile just to investigate. Wow... my competition is 95% disappointing. My non-existent labia recoiled in dismay. "May or may not be an axe murderer." "Thinks sports fanwear is dressing to impress." "I just killed this animal! Date me!" "Dude, do you realize you are grimacing?"

I've literally never met a person who didn't consider themselves economically knowledgeable.

It's like an analog to the fact that almost all people consider themselves funny.

We can't know.

As an extreme example, antisemitism was so commonly palatable that an open admirer of Hitler, Charles Lindbergh, was a very serious candidate for the presidency.

Today, open antisemitism can get one's career derailed in much of the world. Would that be true without the eye-opening shock that the news of the concentration camps produced?

IN NOW WAY was the Holocaust forgivable, but we simply cannot say if the world today would be "more moral on average" or "less moral on average". Maybe Jews would feel and be far less safe today in predominantly Christian countries. Maybe not.

All we can say for certain is that the horrors enacted upon the Holocaust victims were evil. As we can surely say that murdering many millions of people living in the USSR would be.

My minor required me to take Electricity & Magnetism from the physics department the same semester I had to take Fields & Waves from the electrical engineering department.

Yes, they were identical.

My crib note that I took into the later final exam was simply a conversion between terms in the two departments. Nothing else; I'd already crammed and aced the first exam.

I'm afraid it can't do that. I'm sorry, Marcosdumay. /s
IAmBroom··on Shimano Bicycle Museum Review
There's a fun, two-story Bicycle Museum in Pittsburgh as well. Huge collection, though not much narration.
IAmBroom··on Why the Bronze Age Collapsed
> You can't "just regulate the smiths" like some 21st century despot because those smiths also make the iron tools those people need to farm to pay your taxes.

There is a superstition in the Middle Ages that blacksmiths should not be killed, in the context of battles. Blacksmiths were an absolutely essential part of the support of an army, but his skills and tools were just as useful to the winning side. Minus his skills, his tools were just surplus, heavy items.

Other army support crew like washerwomen, stable boys, and even prostitutes were of course much easier to replace.

IAmBroom··on Why the Bronze Age Collapsed
THAT is your reason for inaccurately summarizing the article?
IAmBroom··on Why the Bronze Age Collapsed
If only someone had written a whole article about this very angle, and posted it atop this thread...
IAmBroom··on Why the Bronze Age Collapsed
You are equating a writing system with a societal collapse?

Whatever it is you are actually alluding to, you've omitted several steps in communicating your anger.

IAmBroom··on Why the Bronze Age Collapsed
I've never heard that the Sea People were a cohesive force, attacking all of Bronze civilization in anything like a coordinated attack.

Waves of invaders can take many generations to wear down the native forces. They don't need to be allied in any formal sense, either. See for example: Saxons turning Britain Anglo-Saxon.

IAmBroom··on Why the Bronze Age Collapsed
... where gold is "gold and cochineal". The red dye brought back to Spain was much higher in value than the gold!

Ironically, Europe already had cochineal, but they foraged the source (parasitic beetles), while the bronze-age Aztecs had the brilliant idea to farm them on planted oak forests.

My car display has NO WAY to cancel navigation guidance from the GPS screen. You can pause guidance, but when you turn the car on again, it tries to resume.

You have to go back from the guidance screen to cancel. So, I never use it.

IAmBroom··on Returning from vacation? The government can search your phone without a warrant
You would do well to learn from Cardinal Richelieu's quote:

"Give me six lines written by the hand of the most honest man, and I will find something in them which will hang him."

IAmBroom··on Returning from vacation? The government can search your phone without a warrant
Your math doesn't line up. 0.0013% is ten times less than 0.014%.

If there is a spurious zero, .013% is a 7% change from 0.014%, not 0.001%.

IAmBroom··on Coding is not solved
Yes, but MFABT has been mocked for the entire time by many.
IAmBroom··on Pirating the Pirates
Buying art does not give you any rights to force the owner to do anything, either.

This is where IP law gets so confusing in the modern world. You can "buy" access to IP, and it feels like you are buying the thing, but you are not. Netflix is under no obligation to provide s04e01 of CSI:Indianapolis, even if that's the sole reason you subscribed.

I'm not sure what you are arguing for. Should an artist be able to remove a viewing of a film that's already occurred if they dislike the final product? Or should George be able to forbid me to watch a released version of SW where Han shoots first?

IAmBroom··on Coding is not solved
I stand corrected.

Your claim is that you can be successfully sued without breaking a law. Cite.

Civil law is still based upon law.

IAmBroom··on Everybody’s home. No one’s coming over
> > My parents were always busy and exhausted.

> So are modern parents, and all indications are they are more exhausted.

"Exhausted", meaning drained of mental energy, might be true.

Parents of today are (on average) absolutely not more exhausted in the physical sense, because of the ongoing reduction in frictional effort that technology provides.

I believe it could be used for good things, bad things, or a bit of both. I passionately believe this!

Like some of his competitors in the race to develop electrical lighting? Many suffered fires that destroyed their workspaces.

> If they broke laws then they would be investigated.

Not a fact but a hope. Most lawbreaking is never investigated. It has to be discovered, the authorities have to be alerted, and then they have to choose to investigate. See the recent Cornell University gangrapes for proof that authorities can choose to simply not investigate.

> They could get sued, mind you.

If they didn't break laws, as you imply, the lawsuit should be tossed out as frivolous. (Spoiler: they did break laws.)

IAmBroom··on You are no longer invited to dinner
Absolutely true about the two divisions in people.

I had an introverted girlfriend who enjoyed my tradition of inviting couples over for small dinner parties, but if said couple didn't reciprocate the invitation within some arbitrary period, she would claim they were impolite and we shouldn't invite them anymore.

My view was and is: the number of people happy to be invited to a party is lower than the number of people who are happy to host. It's not rudeness, nor even selfishness; it's sometimes just a flavor of introvert behavior.

If this weren't true, you'd be too busy with invites to think of some friends as "they always throw great parties".

> The counterpoint is that the US is producing more crude domestically than ever with more efficient drilling technology:

Your link doesn't back up your claim that it's more efficient. And believing that fracking is "more efficient" than simply drilling into a pressurized gusher pocket is a boggling conclusion.
