Hortinstein··on Hey, GitHub – Waiting list signup
Hahahah thank you for posting this, I was about to go look for this because I remember being in tears laughing when I saw it this first time and immediately thinonof this whenever I see voice controlled things
Hortinstein··on Show HN: My Permanent Cure for Boredom
I'm in this spot to. My backlog for programming projects I want to do alone is reaching steam backlog proportions. I also struggle to even keep a to-do list since new things are added daily for leisure activities.
Hortinstein··on The Comprehensive List of Window Managers for Unix
I have dreamed of trying a window manager where instead of work spaces it has can be scrolled side to side like a big white board where you can pan and scroll and even zoom out to see the whole work space . The closest thing I have found are some VR work spaces, does anyone have any 2d reccomendations. Would love to see if this would work for my work flow
Hortinstein··on The smallest and worst HDMI display
Wow this triggered some memories I cannot place but I love it!
Hortinstein··on Dungeon Magazine
man, i would love this if they had it for Magic the Gathering Duelist Magazine. I would pay money for a PDF copy of all of those
Hortinstein··on Ask HN: What are the best advanced computer science courses online?
I graduated from GA Tech's online masters in Computer Science and I felt like it was worth the time and money. Some courses were better than others, but it's constantly improving. I know a ton of people in the program too who are enjoying it. Think the entire program cost me a little over $8k USD. https://omscs.gatech.edu/
Hortinstein··on AWS Lambda pricing now per ms
Wow amazing project! Another reason to start looking at terraform for my next project
Hortinstein··on Htop 3.0
Ctop is great for docker as well!
Hortinstein··on Wirelessly charging electric cars as they drive
One step closer to F-Zero. On a more serious note, This is really exciting. I would be interested to see how they would bill for this type of charging.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F-Zero

Hortinstein··on What: A terminal tool to check what is taking up your bandwidth
would this work with WSL...dont think it would with wsl2 since it runs in a virtual kernel. It could work with WSL though, very curious if anyone can get it to work
Hortinstein··on Thoughts on Rust bloat
I would likely use this depending on how transparent it was and the pricing and if it supported RLS etc. I was writing a rust project on a terrible old laptop that took 2-5 minutes for compilation time. I ended up standing up a Digital Ocean instance and used VScode (via Coder https://github.com/cdr/code-server ). And this ended up being the most workable solution. Cut down my compilation times significantly and also helped w/ VScode RAM usage.

Not sure how the buisness model for a cloud compiler would work, but I would be interested.

Hortinstein··on Ask HN: Best free compute and other resources for startups?
I have been running a small scoreboard on Zeit's free tier for almost 3 years now...I set it and forget it, only use it once per year and for a while i couldn't even figure out why it was still working or where it was hosted. Love Zeit!
Hortinstein··on Show HN: Slim – Build and run tiny VMs from Dockerfiles
this is great! This might have saved me some time I was planning on spending to learn packer. I have a docker based project and I wanted to add VM generation to the CI pipeline.

Really excited to play with this tonight

Hortinstein··on Why Not Rewrite It in Rust? (2016)
steve, think I sent you an email before and you responded, but just wanted to say again the Rust Book is a work of art. Since I read it and emailed you, I completed a fairly non-trivial Grad School project entirely in rust. I took a lot of the shortcuts, but the rust book was an excellent primer.

Best intro documentation of any language I have tried to learn recently.

EDIT for those who havent seen it: https://doc.rust-lang.org/book/

Hortinstein··on Actix-web 1.0 – A small, pragmatic, and fast web framework for Rust
thanks for the great rundown, is there a good complete example you could reccomend that shows off 1.0 features that includes web sockets. I Would like to try and Actix up and this seems like a good time (since last time I tried I found the Actor model a little confusing).

It appears this example I found is a little dated (using .8 and actors).

Thanks!

Hortinstein··on Remote Development with Visual Studio Code (SSH/Docker)
yeah, this is incredible and has the potential to make a change in the onboarding process.

Well done to the team, constantly impressed with VS Code. Wish it wasn't such a resource hog but other that that amazing product!

Hortinstein··on Show HN: RealtimeApp – Deploy a realtime app using serverless components
I was wondering this too a few years back when serverless started to gain traction. I remember thinking it sounded like a lot of mock infrastructure. Just did a search and found the following links interesting:

https://medium.freecodecamp.org/the-best-ways-to-test-your-s... https://github.com/lambci/docker-lambda

It seems non-trivial to set up at this point

EDIT: Still reading into it... https://serverless.com/framework/docs/providers/aws/guide/te...

Would love to here a best practice case study from someone who has deployed something like this

Hortinstein··on Coder (Visual Studio Code in browser) goes open source
Has anyone tried this and compared it to https://www.theia-ide.org/?

First thing off the bat I notice is that Coder looks harder to deploy or try out, Theia was super easy, on the landing page they had a docker one liner:

docker run -it -p 3000:3000 -v "$(pwd):/home/project:cached" theiaide/theia:next

Hortinstein··on The New 30-Something
out of curiosity...guessing Boston?

[edit] more likely referring to Chicago

Hortinstein··on Amazon stops selling Dash buttons
author here of node-dash-button...i have let support lapse a little bit, but it still should work. Might be time to go in for a maintenance release.

Glad people are still finding a use for it!

Hortinstein··on Learning Rust via Advent of Code
documentation is much better, here are a few links that should answer your question

https://doc.rust-lang.org/book/ch04-02-references-and-borrow... https://doc.rust-lang.org/book/ch10-03-lifetime-syntax.html

Hortinstein··on Rust 1.32 released
I think it has come along really well. I started trying to learn it a few years ago, but going through the official documentation that was recently revised has been a breath of fresh air. Went from one of the most confusing experiences to one of my favorite. Highly recommend starting here

Hortinstein··on Ask HN: What are some hacks of real founders who did things that don't scale?
I am sure hardware startups are littered with these kinda stories, but Oculus seems to be a good example. I remember reading somewhere initial prototypes were basically duct-tape'd together

Hortinstein··on Show HN: Paladin Cyber (YC S17)- Free browser security and protection for Chrome
Very cool, some other good information on the website:

https://www.meetpaladin.com/paladin-browser-protection-for-c...

Hope to see some deep dives on the extension features on your blog!

Hortinstein··on Serverless Raspberry Pi Cluster with Docker
great article, been a huge fan of your stuff in the past. Helped me get some good ideas of things to use my Pi and Clusterhat with. https://clusterhat.com
Hortinstein··on Ask HN: Is Georgia Tech's Online Master in CS Worth It?
I only provided people in my professional life.
Hortinstein··on Tinychain: a pocket-sized implementation of Bitcoin
nice work, this is really cool. Source is very readable, great resource for those looking to understand bitcoin. Can't wait to play around with it and deploy it on my little raspberry pi swarm!
Hortinstein··on Is Basho dead?
Very interested
Hortinstein··on A critique of trends in tech
I can't wait until I hear about a Young Adult novel with this as a primary plot device. I will know where the idea came from.
Hortinstein··on Pi and the Golden Ratio
Example of his books (unfortunately the only one I have read...so far)

Permutation City: People can run simulations of themselves or entirely migrate their consciousness into computer programs, but existence is often limited to the amount of computation that you can afford, leading to slow existences that stretch time into fractions of realtime. That premise had me hooked, but the book has fantastic thought provoking plot points throughout. Highly recommended.
