Was the part about a developer turning it down because of the NDA part of the marketing too? Most likely this story came out because the press will print anything about magic leap if it fits the narrative of ML being in trouble. Highly unlikely this was a marketing stunt.

The Rolling Stone writer who tried it in December was impressed (of course that’s not to say he thought it was perfect either) and people at GDC who demoed it were also impressed. It’s looking less and less like this is the next theranos as everyone loves to say.

They’ve been very upfront about this. The problem is all the noise that’s been generated by armchair critics who have spammed every article about them calling them a scam/vaporware/the next Theranos, etc.

While I somewhat agree, I also think that there is something to the argument that “investors have been giving them money for years”. At a certain point it becomes clear that those investors are probably wiser than the armchair critics who have no insight. I’m sure those investors have heard the criticism a million times before plunking down more cash. If there were a problem the investing would have stopped years ago.

People have been comparing magic leap to theranos for years but neglecting the major differences between the two. Magic leap will at least have a product out that does not need to meet stringent FDA guidelines. Magic leap is not being sued by its own investors (they’ve had separate legal issues but not that). And magic leap is not shuttering it’s offices. They’ve revealed their product two months ago and are doing multiple public presentations in 2 weeks. It’s looking more and more likely that a product is actually coming to market and that investors gave them that sum simply because it’s a real product they see a future in.

That's why long term Magic Leap's hip-worn battery/processor and Apple's likely to be iPhone connected to glasses solution will trump the all-in-one Hololens style design.

Their strategy is to get devs on board first with their creator edition launching this year. SDK in two weeks at GDC.

Er, I didn't say that. But the three presentations are to teach devs how to use their platform. I'm sure you were just being snarky with the assumption that it will just be another celebrity appearance, but I'm pointing out that there is about to be a windfall of info about their device, it's capabilities and real world demos.

I think you'll be surprised if that's really what you expect. Developers don't pay money to see something like that. They're there to learn and the three presentations are aimed at using the platform. Expect an SDK release as well.

Only a couple weeks to find out. They have multiple presentations slated for GDC, the largest gaming developer conference.

You said you’ve never seen anyone call them the next Theranos or vaporware. You then proceed to link me to a bunch of neutral stories in which invariably someone does call them that and even after I gave you links supporting that notion. And here’s the thing, the skeptics have been forced to change their tune for the most part ever since the product was revealed in December. Of course no one will ever acknowledge that. No no, they always thought it was real... smh.

Even in your link there are multiple people calling it the next theranos or vaporware. Just because there happen to be some level-headed people here doesn't exclude that the majority of news pumped out is dubious about Magic Leap's ability to accomplish anything. The "public at large" are definitely betting that Magic Leap are another Theranos and will self-implode shortly, or just be vaporware forever.

4 years. It matters.

They only got funding in 2014. Before that it was just a guy in his garage tinkering with concepts. People often think they’ve been making t for 8 years because that’s when the company was founded. But actually at that time they were working on an iPhone app, not a headset.

There currently is no AR consumer device. If they launch within the next 6 months, as rumored, they are in a very good position. That being said, I didn't say there isn't reason to be skeptical. Just that most people are oblivious to the leaks because it's easier to talk smack about them getting funding without a public product yet.

There have been several articles over the past months about an upcoming launch and descriptions of the product. It's just that people here only like to discuss the funding articles because it's easier to cast doubt.
