HollywoodZero··on A suspiciously criminal portfolio website
It's laggy on Safari on Mac too. It's moving at like 15 FPS, so it's pretty choppy.
HollywoodZero··on My husband was right about DVDs
they do a great job at compressing and encoding.

I'll buy the bluray/dvd, then download the torrent for the movie to put into Plex. Like a backup, but MUCH better and easier on the size than I would be able to do myself.

HollywoodZero··on My husband was right about DVDs
Anyone else rip their DVDs, import them into Plex, then share your Plex library with others?
HollywoodZero··on What’s in a PR statement: LastPass breach explained
+1. The URL is a huge red flag since it's exactly how scammers create fake links online.
HollywoodZero··on Americans duped into losing $10B by illegal Indian call centres in 2022: report
It's not just India.

The rise in the random texts (which end up pushing investment scams) also originates in off shore call centers in Southeast Asia.

Often times they get migrant workers with promises of jobs, but then take their passport and force them into years of repaying for their relocation fees.

HollywoodZero··on The Preppers Were Right All Along
> I'd imagine that creative engineers who can ensure clean water supply and working electricity (or other smaller services) would be more valuable

In the World War Z novel, there's a section where the head of rebuilding in the US is speaking and talking about the new power structure in post-Z society as they look to rebuild.

He talks about how it's the blue collar workers: carpenters, farmers, plumbers, electricians, and their skillset that end up becoming the new key individuals in society because of their ability to build up from a collapse. It's not just hoarding guns and ammo. Those can be dealt with and they are dealt with by the military. Even a smaller military still has enough resources to take care of the local militias (preppers with guns and food).

But if you REALLY want to survive and thrive post collapse, it'll take practical skills to re-build.

HollywoodZero··on The Instagram capital of the world is a terrible place to be
I am 100% supportive and in agreement of this.

Case in point was going to Athens for a work event. I felt like the Parthenon was disappointing experience. The crowds were terrible. You can't get anywhere near the actual building. And it's often under some type of renovation/construction, so there's scaffolding everywhere. There are no trees, so it's basically it's a bit of a hike, waiting in lines, and then without shade you're out in the blazing sun (if in Summer time).

Afterwards I went to another site in Athens, the Ancient Agora of Athens. Wow, what a completely different experience. It was mostly empty. But there were several big buildings to actually walk up to and into. There were remnants of statues and other historical items that made it super interesting. There were also trees, for shade and the grounds were really well kept.

https://goo.gl/maps/pGRysme3D91Kt8Q7A if anyone is interested in seeing some of the photos of the location. I had never heard of it, but had a few hours to explore and this location saved my Athens experience.

HollywoodZero··on Stadia died because no one trusts Google
You could also just use an Xbox controller, right? I mean, I'd rather use that than the Stadia controller.
HollywoodZero··on The Elves Leave Middle Earth – Sodas Are No Longer Free (2009)
The interesting thing is that in MANY of these situations, you can guarantee that executives are getting free drinks, lunches, etc. as part of the perks.

I've seen it happen. No soda, no food. But the executive assistant will do a lunch run every day for executives. And will pick up drinks too. Or there's usually a stocked fridge for executives near their wings of the building.

HollywoodZero··on The Elves Leave Middle Earth – Sodas Are No Longer Free (2009)
You do bring up a valid point.

One of the tricky issues is when you have other office locations based outside of the US.

There's TONS of hoops you have to follow to offer comparable benefits for employees in other locations around the world.

HollywoodZero··on The Elves Leave Middle Earth – Sodas Are No Longer Free (2009)
I used to be in a management role a number of years back and faced this same issue.

Thankfully I was able to convince executive management that for our several hundred employee company, running a Coke soda machine was basically the cost of 1 Tech Support headcount.

That's it.

One of the most popular in-office perks, the Coke freestyle machine was 1 tech support headcount.

That was years ago. And we still have that machine.

HollywoodZero··on What is this Facebook post with 1.1M comments?
I've noticed now several random pages on Facebook that have been offering some BIG PRIZE to a random person who comments.

All of the comments get followed up with a request to "sign up" at the top of the page.

It looks like all of these end up referencing a form on the submitentrys.com domain.

Giving a way a car or a trip to some exotic location has to have some catch.

For the truck page, it looks like the admins are in China and the US. One admin did not have a location to report (concerning).

Is this a new variation of how international data mining organizations get people in the US to give up their personal social data by signing up with these pages?

We know the fallout from the Russian orgs getting data from social media on US adults, but is this a new version post-Facebook's crack down on data access?

HollywoodZero··on CDC warns of a steep decline in teen mental health
+1. My oldest is in high school now and even in her honors classes there's the ability to turn on some things late and even some re-takes are allowed.

I don't know where these ZERO mistakes-type of mentality is coming from.

HollywoodZero··on The Windows Shutdown crapfest (2006)
I'm not a developer, but a PM. I wonder if in the age of GitHub, if this node to root process still exists the same fragmented state.

Any devs with insight?

Doesn't, the modern git approach make it MUCH easier for developers to get more immediate changes to the codebase?

HollywoodZero··on Bridge collapse in Pittsburgh’s Frick Park
> The fact that keeping infrastructure safe is "political suicide"

Is this a good reason why politics should always include term limits? It would prevent anyone from NOT doing something that is in the good for the constituents, but is seen as "political suicide". Since no one can be in politics long term, you might as well make the tough decisions.

HollywoodZero··on Don't you lecture me with your thirty dollar website

HollywoodZero··on IBM’s Watson Health is sold off in parts
I love these commercials that at the end everyone is sitting at their desks with their suit jackets still on. Who does this?
HollywoodZero··on IBM’s Watson Health is sold off in parts
Just like Oracle.

No one talks about Oracle. But they're still around. We did a major tech project to migrate off of Oracle after an acquisition of a large org that was running it.

It was a year-long effort to migrate. But it was worth it since Oracle renewal costs were going to be nearly 50% of our IT budget.

HollywoodZero··on IBM’s Watson Health is sold off in parts
Isn't this the typical corporate acquisition process?

* Bring in Deloitte, McKenzie, or other consulting group.

* Gut the acquired company to reduce costs.

* Fold newly acquired divisions into existing mediocre division.

* Service gets run into the ground without the original people who made it great.

* Eventually the service degrades and customers leave, business line stops generating profits

* Company goes through the process again.

HollywoodZero··on How to Be Useless
As soon as many of us went to remote work, suddenly there's this rise of making the "perfect" home office.

Why? why do I need to buy more stuff, take on the extra work of making my home office LOOK like a pristine zen room? Do I need all the LED lights that streamers use?

I thought the whole point of working from home was the flexibility to do work when and where was best for me. Sometimes I find myself after hours in my basement thinking, why don't I just go sit outside and enjoy the sun? I have entires days when I basically go from the upstairs to the downstairs and then back up at the end of the day. No different from going to the office, only the office was my basement.

HollywoodZero··on How to Be Useless
Another, maybe even more simple approach is: the art of saying no.

Corporate life today has this idea that we should always be doing more. Side hassles, taking on more. Putting in extra hours, etc.

There's beauty in knowing when enough is enough and stepping back and making time for yourself.
