Hobotron1··on I am thinking of returning my Apple Watch
> At $500, even for someone on minimum wage it's not even 1 month wage after taxes.

If you ignore rent, utilities, food, that unexpected medical emergency, this months car repairs because you can't get to work without it, and you can't afford to save up to get a nicer car that doesn't always break down because of these constant repairs...

Hobotron1··on Why Ken Jennings’s ‘Jeopardy’ Streak Is Nearly Impossible to Break
I'm not certain about 538s target demographic these days.

I'm gonna guess that they did solve it analytically, but for the sake of exposition and readers that might not know what a binomial distribution, they bring up the coin-flip as an illustrative example.

Hobotron1··on What Two Programmers Have Revealed About Seattle Police Officers
It seems indicative of hostility and disdain- an unsubstantiated dismissal.

And regardless of how you see it, plenty of people associate it with being mercilessly bullied.

Hobotron1··on IBM's Watson will be used to make decisions about cancer care in 14 hospitals
I imagine the same as CT/X-Ray manufacturers. It's going to be used as a tool, not a replacement for an oncologist.
Hobotron1··on Project: A Simple Operating System
I can't access the assignments or lectures.
Hobotron1··on An analysis of Internet trolling and why they do it
It's something to do when my IBS flares up.
Hobotron1··on Entrepreneurial Tendencies Among People with ADHD
I feel likes there's a middle ground between acting like a 'pussy' and barreling headfirst into something.

I mean, the guy who takes the time to make a spear and plan an attack is probably gonna live a better life than the dude that charges right into a slap-fight with a lion and the other dude cowering inside the cave.

Hobotron1··on What happens after you’re arrested at a protest in New York
> We can find other people to be police officers.

Can we though? I sure as shit don't want to be one.

Hobotron1··on How the language you speak changes your view of the world
23 auf Deutsch is dreiundzwanzig or "three and twenty-many"

Fun stuff.

Hobotron1··on Dropbox moves to Ireland for all customers outside of North America
Wouldn't the NSA be able to capture the data on the way out anyways?
Hobotron1··on Show HN: The Loft Club – Monthly access to top restaurants in your city
This might seem weird- but to me, it has the same appeal as television: the selection is already made.

Choosing a restaurant to eat at is such a small barrier, but it feels huge (kinda like picking an episode on NetFlix).

I definitely see the appeal in getting an e-mail saying: "Hobotron, a table for 2 is reserved at Lait de Tétine this Thursday at 7PM." and when you show up your preferred cocktail is already on the table.

Could partner up with Uber/Limo/Whatever to provide rides to/from in the event you wish to indulge to excess.

Hobotron1··on Why Mental Health Disorders Emerge in Your Early 20s
Agreed- there's no monopoly on suffering.
Hobotron1··on Why Mental Health Disorders Emerge in Your Early 20s
My first semester, sophomore year of college. Depression, Alcohol/assorted drugs combined with stress lead to auditory hallucinations. This affected my studies leading to more stress and depression and on and on... I ended up drinking a bunch of anti-freeze that following summer. Fun times.

I lost most/all my friends because of my antics, and (barely) graduated (6 years for a BS, god I'm an idiot).

Things have settled down now though- I'm in my mid-20s and work a lame job. I keep to myself and shitpost on the internet.

Hobotron1··on Project: A Simple Operating System
I never got a chance to take the Systems Programming or OS Dev courses while in school- does anyone know of any online courses (or textbooks) that, by the end of it, will have you with a working toy OS through the exercises?
Hobotron1··on Contrast Rebellion
> because they ostensibly deserve less attention.

They end up standing out to me, and I always end up reading them.

Hobotron1··on PepsiCo to Drop Aspartame from Diet Pepsi
I gave up soda/beer and have become a La Croix junkie as of the last couple months.

Hobotron1··on Foundations of Data Science by John Hopcroft [pdf]
Same- in the event I do get stuck in a textbook, it's usually on one of the "challenge" problems that tend to require a clever insight that you can be led to if you have access to a professor with office hours. I don't, so following a solution up until the clever insight (and no further) is the best I can really do.
Hobotron1··on How Photography Was Optimized for White Skin Color
That doesn't support the narrative the author constructed before fact-finding, so it's left out.
Hobotron1··on Visual C++ Cross-Platform Mobile
Doesn't the latest C++ standard more or less include C99?
Hobotron1··on Show HN: A random startup generator

Reminds me of my dial-up days- go to /., click every link and open all the comments, then go take a shower, make dinner, and by the time I sat down to eat all the links had loaded!
Hobotron1··on Recycling in America
I'm a homeless vagabot, and included the caveat that I'm not well versed in economics, so the glut of options wasn't apparent to me.
Hobotron1··on Recycling in America
Perhaps someone better versed in economics can help me here:

isn't this the type of thing where a tax might be useful- for example, a tax on products that use 'new' plastic/glass as opposed to recycled? basically, convert the 'cost' of garbage everywhere into an actual cost?

Hobotron1··on 3,000 floppy disk archive (1982–1994)
I fished out my USB 3 1/2" floppy drive... it still works. I've also got a box of old floppies. Guess I know what I'm doing this weekend!

For anyone else that didn't know: a bridge-and-tunnel (B&T) person is one who lives in the suburbs and is perceived as unsophisticated.

I'm perpetually amazed at what people can be condescending about.

Hobotron1··on SF plans 120-day annual short term rental caps
Current tenants- paying insane prices for rent

And yes, those that would like to live in the city but can't because of the ridiculous rent or simply lack of rent-able places.

Hobotron1··on SF plans 120-day annual short term rental caps
> Most property owners don't have the capital to destroy their current structures just to replace them with taller buildings.

There are those that do who would gladly fork over a good chunk of change for their lots.

> It would also require displacing current residents, who won't have anywhere else to live while the new building is constructed.

Yeah, lets inconvenience 99% of people just so those few won't be.
