HiroshiSan··on Almost anything you give sustained attention to will begin to loop on itself
The part about good art not being about communication is just plain wrong. Good artists (and yes you can argue that art is subjective) spend thousands of hours studying the fundamentals—perspective, light, colour, value, proportion, anatomy, not to mention the dexterity to making a line—so that they can communicate to the viewer in the best way that suits the piece of art.

Sustaining the attention on an art piece unlocks things that you missed the first time due to having an untrained eye, much like reading a good book.

HiroshiSan··on Waymo granted permit to begin testing in New York City
Yeah the mindset is essentially drive to spec in the test and then skirting the law from then on.
HiroshiSan··on Home Depot sued for 'secretly' using facial recognition at self-checkouts
At my Walmart there is roughly 10-15 self checkouts vs 3 cashiers where people with full carts are waiting in line. Self checkout is great if you have a few items. Also cashiers aren’t that fast considering they have to scan, bag (in some places) and then take your payment.

Some self checkouts are better than others the worst ones are the ones that don’t let you take your items off the scale after scanning and then they throw an error for you to put them back.

I’ve also never felt treated like cattle but I’d figure a checkout with a cashier is more cattle like since you are being funneled through a tight space one after the other vs an open space like self checkouts.

HiroshiSan··on AI cameras change driver behavior at intersections
Worse than that is in my city they decided to add a forced stop to pedestrians crossing a round a bout so if you’re in the roundabout and a pedestrian wants to cross you have to stop before exiting the round about which defeats the purpose of a roundabout…
HiroshiSan··on What methylene blue can (and can’t) do for the brain
The studies referenced are highlighted and spread throughout the video for each point he talks about.

I’m not sure what penis pumps have to do with the quality of his research, they’re a legitimate medical device used in patients with erectile dysfunction. [1]

Here’s a much better treatment of methylene blue than this article:

HiroshiSan··on The curse of knowing how, or; fixing everything
At least the failures were in software and not hardware. Nothing worse than having to take everything a part again after spending hours on an engine job because you forgot to plug something in or a seal wasn’t installed properly. Or you wonder why the engineers decided to put that oil filter right beside the cat so you could burn the back of your hand.
HiroshiSan··on GM blocks dealers from using Apple CarPlay, Android Auto aftermarket kits
Considering they got a government bailout once already I don’t think the US would ever let that happen.
HiroshiSan··on Changes in schizophrenia diagnoses associated with cannabis use disorder
A lot of people like to pretend that smoking weed is harmless.

I support legalization but from my personal experience, I’ve suffered psychosis twice after smoking weed, and that’s enough for me.

HiroshiSan··on The motor turns too much
Very cool, I'm in automotive and in school we've got a few of these builds with some older engines to play around with.
HiroshiSan··on Galois Theory
Ah yes I know that exact problem. AoPS intro to algebra. That question was great for getting an intuitive sense of proportion, though I do remember one of the sub problems gave me some trouble.
HiroshiSan··on A supermarket trip may soon look different, thanks to electronic shelf labels
Sure make it costly for the company that already pays the employee peanuts when some dickhead leaves a cart full of groceries to spite upper management. Sounds like a fantastic strategy…
HiroshiSan··on Ask HN: What was your most humbling learning moment?
I recently got into the trades and every single day is a humbling experience, seeing what my coworkers can do first hand is astounding I feel like a baby in terms of ability and using tools is awkward, diagnosing vehicles properly is very difficult, the whole experience is such a grinding humbling mess.
HiroshiSan··on AI doppelgänger experiment – Part 1: The training
Goodluck replicating and replacing a leyendecker or a Gibson or a Rockwell. Getting to that level of technical proficiency is more than just settling into a style.
HiroshiSan··on Outdoor time is good for kids' eyesight
I’d still venture to guess it was genetics, I played outside all the time, granted I used the computer a lot growing up too and I still needed glasses around 13 - 14 years of age.
HiroshiSan··on Ask HN: Has anyone successfully started their career over in their 30s?
Yes,

I went from focusing on programming, to then switching to Math, dropping out to focus on art, and now I have a career in coffee and I couldn’t be happier as all the interests and skills I’ve acquired over the years of flip flopping have only been a plus when growing a business.

HiroshiSan··on My best techniques for evaluating character
The only technique I’ve ever relied on without fail is to trust my gut.
HiroshiSan··on Distributor cancelled an order and we need to move 30k bags of coffee [updated]
> Still good but hardly fresh for a specialty.

Was going to say this, I work at a specialty coffee shop and anything over 2-3 weeks is unusable.

HiroshiSan··on I plan to leave tech to pursue art
I did something similar though I never made it into tech, I dropped out of a bachelor's in math to pursue art, this was roughly 5 years ago and it's been a tough journey, I wish you the best of luck.

Some resources that will help you a long the way:

youtube: proko steve huston steven zapata ahmed aldoori sinix

nma.art watts atelier schoolism

Try to find a local life drawing class and go every single week.

Animation specific check out Toniko Pantoja, ModerndayJames.

I'm currently trying to change my relationship to art from something I pursue to make money, to something I enjoy doing to fuel my soul. I haven't drawn in a couple months, but I've come to terms that it's something I'll always be pursuing, in what capacity I'm not sure, but art, is the coolest thing that's ever come into my life.

HiroshiSan··on Ask HN: How did you find joy in life?
Exercise and Diet.

The worst part about it is not the deactivation itself but the fact that you can’t get support until you give them what they want otherwise they refuse to help.

How that’s an okay business practice is beyond me.

He does have a course called “watercolor in the wild” though I can’t vouch for it as I only draw in charcoal.

HiroshiSan··on Books I loved reading this year
I’m surprised to see Klara and The Sun on the list. Though I enjoyed the character of Klara, the book itself felt like a huge letdown and don’t see how it makes it on anyones top 5 list.

Would love to hear others thoughts on it?

HiroshiSan··on Pictures reveal the isolated lives of Japan’s social recluses (2018)
Yes I was able to get it to successfully work, you just have to keep zapping elements until the page displays properly. This also works on instagram if you're viewing without an account, though they seem to shadowban ip's now as I can't view accounts until after a few days.

you can also use uBlock Origin to zap the elements.
HiroshiSan··on Hit songwriters ask pop stars to stop taking credit for songs they didn't write
^ this.

I find the idea of being fed a story fascinating because a successful story feels more real than life itself and I'm not sure you can separate the two (life and the stories we tell ourselves). Once you can see it for what it is, that it's just a story, it breaks the illusion. But a really powerful story sucks you back in time and time again, and sometimes, you forget that you were being told a story in the first place.

And now after typing the above paragraph I sit wondering how many stories I currently believe are real, are just stories after all. Money being one of the most powerful.

HiroshiSan··on Hit songwriters ask pop stars to stop taking credit for songs they didn't write
As a huge fan of blackpink I highly recommend you check out the documentary they have on Netflix. It became obvious after watching it that the genius behind blackpink is Teddy Park, who was also behind another massively successful girl group 2NE1.

I've thought about it slightly and without Teddy Park there is no blackpink, but without the individual members each bringing their own flavour to the group, there is no blackpink either.

If you're familiar with the concept art industry, this is essentially just character design but with living people.

We are being fed a story, Katy Perry and Ariana Grande are good examples of this.
