HexDecOctBin··on Nvidia announces native GPU programming in Rust
That's a shame
HexDecOctBin··on Nvidia announces native GPU programming in Rust
Anyone know when Rust's std::autodiff will become stable? Assuming this Rust support expands to other GPU vendors, autograd will probably be the only reason to use Slang instead of Rust anymore.
HexDecOctBin··on I can't stop thinking about Papua New Guinea
No, I am asking why were Australians sending the Highlanders anywhere? By what right? Why were they leaving?
HexDecOctBin··on I can't stop thinking about Papua New Guinea
> when the Australians later sent highlanders to work on coastal plantations in the 1950s, they died at alarming rates

What is this referring to? Indentured Servitude? Slavery?

HexDecOctBin··on Logo Programming
I learnt that I must be good at computers when in 4th grade, despite never having touched a PC before, I not only managed to ace my Logo class but was asked by my teacher to help out other struggling students (I am just realising that essentially made me a TA in our class). I still remember trying to understand the Pen Up and Pen Down commands from a book with no immediate access to a PC to try them on.
HexDecOctBin··on Tiny $70 Xteink X3 e-reader
Yeah, I had the protector. It cracked from inside, so I guess maybe the force came from the other side.
HexDecOctBin··on Tiny $70 Xteink X3 e-reader
Mine's screen cracked in a month. Didn't drop it or mishandled it. Be aware that is it much more fragile that a Kindle.
HexDecOctBin··on Music Theory for Programmers
How would you divide 22 in small ratios, considering that 11 is a prime number?
HexDecOctBin··on Music Theory for Programmers
West Asian maqam has 24 notes, Indian classical has 22 notes, Indonesian gamelan has 5 or 7 notes. What would be the ratios that sound pleasurable now?

What is or isn't pleasurable is a matter of cultural training, and treating them as absolute facts is what I found frustrating in the books that I was complaining about.

HexDecOctBin··on Music Theory for Programmers
As a non-musician non-Western programmer, the only music book that is making sense to me (still reading) is Robert Snyder's Music and Memory[1]. It's the first book that doesn't trick me by trying to pass cultural artefacts (notes, scales, raga, etc.) as some universal truth, or douse me in medieval pseudo-science (Pythagorean small ratios, etc.)

I am not an expert, so maybe this book has its own shortcomings which I am being blind to. But this is the first book on music I have been able to read this far without having to fight the urge to fling it against a wall.

HexDecOctBin··on Your Racist Linux Distro Is Very Nice (Scott Jennings)
Even ignoring Hansson's racism and general assholery, can Linux users please start treating OSes like infrastructure and not like costumes? Just use Mint (or Fedora if feeling adventurous) on PCs and Debian on servers. Nobody can build anything if the ground keeps shifting.
HexDecOctBin··on Introducing Ad Blocker for Firefox on iOS
It’s not clear from the post, are they supporting the Content Blocker API? In other words, can I use Adguard with Firefox now on iOS?
HexDecOctBin··on Casey Muratori – The Root of the Root of All Evil – BSC 2026 [video]
History wouldn't keep repeating if they did so.
HexDecOctBin··on Casey Muratori – The Root of the Root of All Evil – BSC 2026 [video]
> that I could practically apply in my daily work

When has History of any kind ever held practical value?

HexDecOctBin··on The End of Programming
And who will fix the slop? Not Silicon Valley programs being paid $200K or whatever. We stand on the verge of a golden age of outsourcing in software which will make all previous phases of outsourcing look like trial runs.
HexDecOctBin··on Japan tried to build an operating system for the world, the US intervened
Ah, so international law matters? In that case, surely China will follow the verdict of the South China Sea Arbitration?
HexDecOctBin··on India has paved the way for charging merchants a fee on UPI transactions
And much of this is result of corruption and mis-governance. Hence my comment of the State betraying the Nation.
HexDecOctBin··on India has paved the way for charging merchants a fee on UPI transactions
What do you mean "finally"? And why are you so willing to accept the fault of Kings but not the fault of the current Government in circumstances that look increasingly similar each passing day?

Just because a Government was elected doesn't mean that it can't be corrupt, what kind of naive understanding of politics is this?

HexDecOctBin··on India has paved the way for charging merchants a fee on UPI transactions
India has gotten more powerful since the Cold War. If Iran can stand up to USA, then surely India can too; but only if the State has not sold its soul and its Nation.
HexDecOctBin··on India has paved the way for charging merchants a fee on UPI transactions
> Both sides are getting something out of it

Indian kings made deals with the East India Company. What did the people got out of it? Destitution?

So no, I am not being melodramatic. India has a history of the State betraying the Nation. Sadly, this is but the latest chapter in a very old saga.

HexDecOctBin··on India has paved the way for charging merchants a fee on UPI transactions
What a fall from grace for the progenitor of Non-Aligned Movement to be bowing down to USA and hurting its own people. The Nation has been betrayed by the State.
HexDecOctBin··on A third world engineer responds to “RISC-V: They should have known better”
So primarily state intervention then?
HexDecOctBin··on A third world engineer responds to “RISC-V: They should have known better”
Why is that? Is it simply a matter of scale (not enough shipping containers leaving from India to Trinidad and Tobago)?
HexDecOctBin··on Firefox for iOS now has a native adblocker
So they still don't support the Content Blocker API? Wouldn't that have been easier? Then I could use whichever lists or providers (Adguard, uBlock, etc.) that I want.
HexDecOctBin··on RISC-V: They Should Have Known Better
Well, graphics programmers were used to the mess from OpenGL days. Now compiler writer and hardware designers get to share the sorrow.
HexDecOctBin··on The Indo-European Family Tree
> The theory of an immigration of IA speaking Arya ("Aryan invasion") is simply seen as a means of British policy to justify their own intrusion into India and their subsequent colonial rule: in both cases, a "white race" was seen as subduing the local darker colored population.

HexDecOctBin··on The Indo-European Family Tree
People don't like getting their dogmas challenged, especially when it comes to their Fathers' sins.
HexDecOctBin··on The Indo-European Family Tree
But the advent of Indo-European languages in Northern India (let alone Southern Sri Lanka) has nothing to do with Alexander or the Mughals.

The Aryan Invasion Theory was propagated by the British to justify their colonial brutality, and no self-respecting historian will now call the gradual Aryan migration an invasion. The only people who still do are usually trying to achieve some political aims, usually imperial apologia.

HexDecOctBin··on Sizeof is surprisingly difficult to parse in C
Yeah, despite puritanical hand-wringing over C23, I do like both the discipline and the selectivity with WG14 has shows (and I say this as a card-carrying C++ hater).

I do wish they will start looking into proper arrays since there is already a syntax for this can can be augmented semantically:

    int func (int arg[static 5])
HexDecOctBin··on SDL_GPU minimal, single-header, high-performance 2D graphics painting library
It doesn't.
