Time enough, at last!!! (not my real name)

Many-many-many times, I want to respond to a comment - I write up an answer.. most times it ends up being a LONG response (i.e. 500-1000 words). I leave the tab open. I re-read it and edit it, I do this a couple of times. When I have written up a 'good enough response', I close the tab and never post the response. I do this so I don't waste people's time with long responses, while giving me the time to think, rethink, read more about the topic, learn from the other responses, and the extra reading I've done. I blame Lex Fridman (and his darn questions) for this!! :)

(but sometimes.. sometimes.. I do hit the 'reply' button)

Hmm.. I see.. 24/2/2017, and today it's 23/2/2025.. 8 years..

(fun fact - the very day I added a (not-my-main) gmail in the email form, someone tried to 'get in', used recovery, etc. So.. "admins see your email below".. is a joke, and a bad one)

HenryBemis··on BuyMeACoffee silently dropped support for many countries (2024)
> all FinTech-type companies as unreliable

Please allow me to disagree (not really but yes). In the same spirit that some (fin-tech) companies prefer to _not_ do business with certain industries (e.g. porn) or countries (e.g. North Korea) for a wide variety of reason, doesn't make them unreliable. Makes them exactly what they are.

I am not trying to equate "access to my money" with "my favourite soft-drink is discontinued" because they have a very different impact to one's life (paying rent/mortgage/bills money vs sugar). I do understand though (I was working in a dairy company many-many years ago), that "we pulled this product because it costs X and makes 2x while product Z makes 5x, so bye-bye". In the same spirit many companies have profit margin requirements and they won't keep 'a service offering' that makes 'just a little'.

HenryBemis··on Ask HN: What will tech employment look like in 10 years?
Sometimes you want them "in 2 years from now" so you 'buy' them now. Also sometimes you want someone to do 3 out of 10 tasks of the job for a couple of years, and then get them to do another 4 out of 10, an ultimately get them to do 10/10 in 6-7 years from now.

I remember those years, I hope they are still around.

HenryBemis··on Ask HN: What will tech employment look like in 10 years?
The hard way makes for better quality.

I can have 18% BMI with ozempic, or I can have 18% BMI running and lifting weights. "We are not the same" to quote the meme [0].

The LLM-bros can do LLM-bro stuff. The hardened Seniors that have seen/done it all are the ones you need on a crisis.

HenryBemis··on Ask HN: What will tech employment look like in 10 years?
I was thinking about LLMs, productivity, the 'human tax', and other parameters from a different view.. "What if" (I am not counting the costs yet/at this point)(numbers come from my head - no supporting documentation for them):

  existing team produces 200
2/10ths of the team + LLM produces 200
existing team + LLM produces 4000
Of course that varies on the area/dept/function/etc. If I was a businessman, I would seek to see how with the same costs I can explode my productivity (quantity _and_ quality), keep team sizes the same and well fed, and let them take the business from +200 to +4000.

Now, I also have (constantly) in mind Orwell's "in front of your nose" [0], so some-one/some-company may sacrifice (as they usually do) the long term for the short term (shareholders must get their dividend _now_ or else...) and in which case, 'never let a crisis go to waste' let's all fire 20% of our staff, destroy benefits/salaries, and hire back everyone at 20%-30% less. Yes our companies will have less profit in the short term, but the cost saving (2y no pay, and afterwards 30% cheaper labour) would be great.

HenryBemis··on EU ruling: tracking-based advertising [...] across Europe has no legal basis
> are wasting their money and my time and bandwidth

_You_ think it doesn't work, but it does. Or at least 'on average' it does. As for your time, perhaps you value your time. But again, 'on average', there are so many people spending hours and hours on Insta, TT, etc. and those people clearly don't care about focus/time/ads, because it is their (mental/spiritual) bread and butter. When a young woman 'follows' 100 'influencers' and each posts twice per day, that young woman consumes at least two hundred ads per day and if she buys at least one item per day, that's a win for 'them'.

Regarding the car/pet scenario, if they are any good they should be advertising stuff to clean dog piss, brushes, etc.. items that "will keep your car clean when you got a pet".

But again.. it works. People make money.

HenryBemis··on Human
> there may never be a last word

We may go 'one step back' to go 'two steps forward'. A WW 1, 2,..., Z, a flood (biblical, 12k years ago, etc.) but life will prevail. It doesn't matter if it's homo sapiens, dinosaurs, etc.

Brian Cox was at Colbert a couple of nights ago, and he mentioned that in a photo of a tiny piece of the sky, there are 10 000 galaxies. So, even if something happens and we are all wiped out (and I mean the planet is wiped out), 'life' will continue and 'we don't matter' (in the big-big-big cosmic picture). And now allow me to get some coffee to start de-depressing myself :)

HenryBemis··on Ask HN: Not sure about the future of tech
> I have never felt like more of a replaceable cog in a machine.

Since forever I remember reading in the news that company XYZ 'let go' # thousands of employees in countries A, B, and from departments C, D.

I was working in a bank (one of the many) back in the late 00s and one morning the (open space) office was dead silent. It use to have 200+ people but that day it had 20+.

Apparently "Management" saw something coming (it was the 2008 crisis) and decided to cut costs asap, and the first to go out were the ~200 contractors (back then there was no 'remote' work, so everyone was in the office). I knew one of them, we grew up in the same neighborhood, and he was super angry because they asked them to simply hand over their laptops and walk out. 1 minute notice, and paid them in the end of the month for the rest of the month and that was that.

At _that_ moment I realized that shit doesn't just happens to others on the news, it happens to all of us, it's not an IF it will happen to you/me/anyone, it is a WHEN it will happen.

Brace yourselves, winter is coming.

HenryBemis··on US Copyright Office found AI companies breach copyright. Its boss was fired
Tyrants & Kings were forced on us and we could only remove with at the cost of blood.

Politicians, they try to crack as fewer eggs as possible, telling us they are our friends, and we believe them. Now then.. some do more good than bad, some do more bad than good. But on the other hand something that is _good for me_ is _bad for you_ and vice versa. Politicians are just the means to move the needle juuuuuuust a little bit, so show a change, but never make a drastic one. The cost of drastic changes is re-election. And this is the bread and butter of politicians (yes, I am over-over-simplifying but this is human history and a lot will be left out in a comment).

> >The art in poetry is poetry, which includes all forms of it

Imho the "art in poetry" begins when I had that dinner with that fascinating woman, and I had the "porch test" and in that test it was raining, and I came up with a haiku. But not (only) on the haiku itself.

HenryBemis··on How friction is being redistributed in today's economy
I think that it doesn't mean "art" but also has "crafts", and the labour that comes with it, in it. You wouldn't call a 'tech-nician' an 'artist', but "tech" is the part of that "ΤΕΧΝΗ". ("ΤΕΧ" being translated/converted to "TECH").

I would put thins in a sequence and say (1) Imagination, (2) Implementation. I bring over a TECHnician to assess the damage in the plumbing-stuff-thingies, and he/she will use (1) imagination to come up with the solution, and (2) pull out his/her tools and fix the darn thing. Now.. the 50yo guy with low cut jeans flashing a hairy butt-crack from under the kitchen sink, is not an 'artist' (in its typical/expected format - painter, sculptor, etc.) but he will use imagination (and/or experience) to fix the thing. Just as a painter would use the imagination (and/or experience in the types of paper/canvas/oil paint/water paint/etc.) to make one-more-painting (I am thinking for the similarities of Van Gogh's starry night, and similar paintings)

HenryBemis··on How friction is being redistributed in today's economy
+100 to that. There are plenty of evidence (e.g. interviews) where the social media folks want other people (including children) to use their shitty products, but they don't 'feed' their garbage to their own children[0]. I remember the filthy snake (sorry.. a CEO) of TikTok trying to convince the world that his child(ren) is/are not on TikTok "because they are too young". As if on their birthday(s) he will gift them an iPhone with a TikTok account in it...

HenryBemis··on ALICE detects the conversion of lead into gold at the LHC
In a way yes, but(!!) if I know the way and I turn 50gr of lead to gold per month, and I slowly do this (not convert 200 tons of lead into gold and flood the market) then I can have a rich and easy life without destabilising the price of gold. But that's just me.. Someone else may play this differently.

Hi, I haven't been bothered by short movies, recommendations, ads, etc. in YouTube since forever. My adblockers do an amazing job in YT and every other corner of the web.

Why should I/we/anyone switch to your website? :)

HenryBemis··on ALICE detects the conversion of lead into gold at the LHC
I definitely will mis-speak/mis-write, but my mathematic (also flawed) tells me that if Gold + 1 = Mercury, then Something + 1 = Gold, so we can find that "something" add 1 of the thingie, and booya!! gold!! (right?) (please read the above with silly humor)

In a slightly more serious note, I remember listening to Elon in some podcast 1-2 years ago saying how they create new metals/alloys that nobody had created previously, because they needed specific needs covered, and no known material had the attributes they needed. So.. in a way..

HenryBemis··on Samsung is paying $350M for audio brands B&W, Denon, Marantz and Polk
> Samsung to shove bloatware down our throats

Why on earth do you say that? :))) I got a nice Samsung 12" tablet, and a nice Samsung (work) smartphone. After 20-30mins of disabling bloat/crap-ware their batteries last a week on stand-by.

HenryBemis··on Samsung is paying $350M for audio brands B&W, Denon, Marantz and Polk
I don't like Apple and its 'stuffs' but if it works anything like Spotify, then I can control 'it/Spotify' from my PC/Firefox while the music is played by my phone to an bluetooth JBL. So even without a dedicated TV/screen, I can listen to Spotify in other devices. I assume the comment would benefit from a setup like that - smartphone to control, AppleTV and the rest for the audio.
HenryBemis··on What I discovered after months of professional use of custom GPTs
I wrote above my 'trick' (method) on using ChatGPT (and planning to soon use Copilot) for BAU. I would like to see/read how others 'operationalize' LLMs for repeatable procedures/processes (not for coding).
HenryBemis··on What I discovered after months of professional use of custom GPTs

  > Instructions are ignored, even when clearly activated with consistent phrasing.
  > No memory between sessions—configuration resets every time.
  > Learning is nonexistent: corrected errors are repeated days or weeks later.

Yes to all. My 'trick' (which adds time & manual effort) is that I save my prompts, and the files I feed 'it', so when I want the process re-run, I start a new chat, upload the same files, and copy & paste the same prompt(s). I never expect 'it' to remember the corrections, I only adjust/rewrite my prompts to set more 'guardrails' to prevent the thing from derailing.

HenryBemis··on Ask HN: How have you spent time outside work for the past couple of weeks?
As someone who also abandoned London a few years ago, I think that any 'place' (town/city/village.. well city) over 2m population is unlivable. Unless someone lives in a super-green (mini forests, parks, etc.) area, has everything within 10-15mins driving (work, home, shopping mall, swimming pool, gym, etc.)

Anything from 50k to 2m will have all that you need (galleries, cinemas, etc.)

On the Q at hand, reading, fasting, writing.

HenryBemis··on We identified a North Korean hacker who tried to get a job
The funniest interview I had, in a similar sneaky question, were the HR guy asked "so you wrote city X, I am also living here, whereabouts do you live?" and I turned the laptop and showed through my window a very unique skyscraper and a super marker right across my flat, and the guy recognized my building because his gf lived in the same building (had more than 100 flats), and we both had a laugh about it. (I got the job later but after having 2-3 more rounds of domain-specific interviews) Those days the "AI" was not around so I wouldn't be able to fake that even if I wanted.

EDIT: I also had interviews with Credit Suisse some years back (decade or so), they wanted me to speak to some people in the US and London, but didn't allow the video conference from home, but they asked me which major city in Europe I was in, so they book some meeting room in their own offices or some WeWork facility in case I was somewhere where they wouldn't have offices.

I wonder if/when (going from N to S) Canada, US, Mexico will form a "North American Union" (in the spirit of the European Union). 50 years? 100 years? never?

Current politics aside, I think: Canada and US have 'very much' in common (I'd risk saying (imho) 85% common 'stuff'). Canada, US and Mexico have 'plenty' in common (mostly Christian, capitalism/consumerism, way of life) (I'd risk saying (imho) 70% common 'stuff'). Once Mexico sorts out this 'minor' (cough-damn!!!-cough) problem (mass graves, decapitated and/or missing students, murder of anyone that doesn't want uncontrolled drug trafficking, etc.) this idea could start becoming a reality.
