HelenePhisher··on Technical Aspects of the Surveillance of Julian Assange in London [video]
Link leads to a live broadcast at Chaos Computer Congress right now but there will be a full recording with translations of the talk available later on. It has incredible insights, like US spy agents acting with laser systems to pick up conversations from the opposite building and implanting bugging devices in the bottom of fire extinguishers or inside of the phones of his visitors. Julian tried to defeat the attacks with talks in the bathroom while the shower was running, dozens of speakers for white noise generation in his room etc.
HelenePhisher··on What the World Can Learn from Hongkong [video]
Somehow. Her grandfather was from Hongkong but she was born in Germany. As far as I know she has been living in Asia for a couple of years and studied in Oxford and at the MIT.
HelenePhisher··on What the World Can Learn from Hongkong [video]
The talk was held in English. The website seems to push the wrong audio track in some cases but you can change that with the little gear icon at the bottom of the video.
HelenePhisher··on What the World Can Learn from Hongkong [video]
The original talk was held in English, but there are translations in French and German available as well. Please have a look at the settings icon of the video, you can change the language of the talk there.
HelenePhisher··on Ask HN: Does anybody have this annotated music dataset?
This seems to be the personal website of the author of the set: https://pageperso.lis-lab.fr/~valentin.emiya/wp/

There is another mail address mentioned; you could try to reach him there.

HelenePhisher··on Ask HN: Germans, how to work legally remote?
That contradicts their own statement in their FAQ:

https://www.it-projekt-eg.de/freiberufler/service/haeufige_f...

That basically translates to "A membership does not protect you from Scheinselbstständigkeit. It will only protect you if the Genossenschaft is the contractor and transfers the job to you."

This might not be possible for all cases.

HelenePhisher··on Apple Reports Declining Profits and Slowing Growth Again
The link "expired", after midnight it counts as pre-market trading activites. AAPL is up 5%, investors seem to like their numbers: https://www.nasdaq.com/symbol/aapl/premarket

It is close to Apples all-time high now.

HelenePhisher··on Apple Reports Declining Profits and Slowing Growth Again
Well just look at this: https://m.nasdaq.com/symbol/aapl/after-hours
HelenePhisher··on Mystery tracks being 'forced' on your Spotify
Haha, yeah, it really is! ;)

The other one is a good question as well. Spotify pays out when a song has been listened to for at least 30 seconds. This has been abused in the past as well: https://qz.com/1212330/a-bulgarian-scheme-scammed-spotify-fo...

The article says it is not clear if the fraudsters abused existing user accounts or set up a farm. But apparently, the songs have been played. They all were exactly 30 seconds long - this is the minimum play time for a song to qualify for a payout.

HelenePhisher··on Mystery tracks being 'forced' on your Spotify
Sounds like he enabled a shady 3rd party app on Spotify. Access tokens do not change when the password is changed.
HelenePhisher··on Mystery tracks being 'forced' on your Spotify
Did you disable your external apps or check them on the Spotify side as well?

https://support.spotify.com/uk/account_payment_help/privacy/... for instructions.

HelenePhisher··on Mystery tracks being 'forced' on your Spotify
It's quite clear to me that this s a fraud to make money. Those tracks are produced by algorithms and played via access tokens gathered from sites like the playlist converters floating around. Be wary of your account data and check the access of 3rd party apps regularly.

https://support.spotify.com/uk/account_payment_help/privacy/... for information how to do that for Spotify.

HelenePhisher··on Canada's New Food Guide
They already did. Valter Longo cited studies with an average intake of 1 litre a day. Gist is, it was quite good for them.
HelenePhisher··on Canada's New Food Guide
His message is that you should not eat oils because their nutritional value has been decreased in the process. He does not meditate about the different fat acids and their functions. In my opinion, he is missing out that there are nuts and oils that are quite similar in their fat composition. Of course, nuts have proteins and carbohydrates (mostly sugar) as well. But what he forgets is that you won't eat olive oil alone - you'll most likely have it with a good amount of greens, tomatoes or whatever.

Just have a look at the study he mentions when he's talking about the impairment of artery functions after eating olive oil: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdf/10.1002/clc.49602214...

Quote: "This impairment, however, was also totally eliminated when vitamins C and E were given. As with antioxidant vitamin supplementation, olive oil, eaten with vinegar on a salad, did not impair endothelial function. Some societies that use the Mediterranean diet may have learned to provide the natural antioxidants which buffer the oxidative stress of these fatty meals."

He totally eliminated this aspect so he can ban the oils. Another discussion here on HN blamed him for cherrypicking studies. I'm not sure if that's wrong. He has some good advice in general but for this aspect, I don't really trust him.

HelenePhisher··on Canada's New Food Guide
Funny thing is that Dr. Valter Longo suggests the exact opposite - a take-in of 80 grams of olive oil a day: https://valterlongo.com/cardiovascular-diseases/

I read both books - "How not to die" (Greger) and "the Longevity Diet" - and I thought about their opinions as well. ATM I tend to stick to good oils from plants as well as nuts. Greger is not very convincing - mostly because he suggests nuts as well, and a good produced oil (like extra virgine olive oil) does not loose much nutritional value. I don't care about reduced antioxidants in oil if I combine it with greens that have loads of them.

HelenePhisher··on Ask HN: Who is the most positive impactful person you know?
Alan Watts
HelenePhisher··on Chinese schools monitor students activities with 'intelligent uniforms'
https://www.theepochtimes.com/chinese-school-tracks-students... is another one on the topic. The uniform can activate an alarm when the sensor detects that a student has fallen asleep in class. Wish I had this when I was in school.
HelenePhisher··on Study finds reducing carbs and replacing with fats leads to increased metabolism
It seems that the carbohydrate intake in these study is mostly based on processed carbohydrates, which are distinguished from unprocessed/lesser processed ones (like beans, fruits, and to a lesser extent rice). Those make a huge difference for our metabolism compared to white flour or industrial sugar. Fruits may contain a lot of sugar as well but it seems to make a big difference if sugar comes with fibres or not.
HelenePhisher··on Smartwatches know you’re getting a cold days before you feel ill
This is still to be discussed but most studies mention the intake of 50-100 mg/day. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3136969/ mentions 75mg, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zinc_gluconate#Zinc_gluconate_... is a good starting point for further research.

But as always, consider every supplement carefully. I took 50mg a day before and noticed some inconvenient side effects like bad odour of my sweat and very dry skin. ATM, I just take 50mg/week, and I didn't experience a cold in the last two years (for whatever reason).

HelenePhisher··on Smartwatches know you’re getting a cold days before you feel ill
Zinc intake. Studies made clear that a supplement of Zinc can help prevent the outbreak of a cold.
HelenePhisher··on Functional Ear Trainer is the number 1 tool for improving your musical ear
The method is explained on this page: https://advancingmusician.com/functional-ear-training
HelenePhisher··on Acquiring absolute pitch in adulthood is difficult but possible
If you want to learn how to recognize tones I highly recommend the method of Alain Benbassat: http://www.miles.be

You'll notice a rapid understanding of tones and keys. There are (even free) apps for Android and iOS as well.

HelenePhisher··on “Stylish” browser extension steals all your internet history
Yes, the option is called "Collect anonymous usage statistics" and is turned on by default. But I don't trust it anymore.

Tampermonkey is here BTW: https://tampermonkey.net/?browser=safari

I really love that one, it does a great job in Safari. Unfortunately, there is no Safari App Extension yet. Since I'm running Safari Preview and Safari 12 does not accept extensions from unknown sources anymore I'm out for now.

HelenePhisher··on “Stylish” browser extension steals all your internet history
You can extract the .crx without Javascript using this webservice: http://crxextractor.com/

Used it a couple of times in the past, it is a good one.

HelenePhisher··on “Stylish” browser extension steals all your internet history
Tampermonkey seems to be a good alternative as well and is available for all major browsers.

Does anyone have information on if the Safari Stylish Addon does the same shady things? It's available in the official App Store and was approved by Apple it seems.

HelenePhisher··on How to Make $80,000 per Month on the Apple App Store (2017)
Asking that myself very often - there is a couple of categories of apps with bullshit and scam on top of the top-grossing lists. Annoying, and Apple should definitely make reporting those easier and tighten up on fraud checks.
HelenePhisher··on Ask HN: Where have you registered your domains and why?
I use OVH for all of my domains because you can register probably any TLD on the planet with them. It is quite cheap as well - and they offer free (minimal) hosting and email forwarders as well. DNSSec and full control of everything.
