HeadsUpHigh··on NFTs and a Thousand True Fans
>but in the particular case of just one game, the value of the token is linked to a single, central authority (the company producing the game) and implementing transactions on an open blockchain seems somewhat superfluous.

I don't understand your angle here. Instead of buying a game on steam, you buy a token. You convert e.g. a stablecoin to the game token and you can trade that token on the 2nd hand market later.

>Another aspect is that when the central authority is also the sole issuer of tokens, no counteracting forces exist to drive a meaningful market dynamic. No matter how much price pressure exists from users, the authority can always act to restrict issuance or increase issuance to force a particular price, and over the long term in the absence of that authority (due to bankruptcy, obsolescence, ..) the value of all issued tokens drifts towards zero.

That depends on the monetary policy for the token which might not be possible to change later on( at least in some blockchains it is set in stone for trust reasons). So you can't just arbitrarily print more or less unless you set it up in such a way in the first place which is transparent. Also I don't understand how the value of tokens drifts towards zero since they live IN THE BLOCKCHAIN and the smart contracts are working regardless of the gamedev existing or not. So you have a digital second hand market essentially.

Couple cents with current prices. Ada is reasonably low and nano is feeless but the network is supported by rainbow farts and unicorns so I wouldn't trust it much.

How are they doing machine learning with PPC from the late 90s?

Paper gold maybe. Buying actual gold tends to be harder than one might expect and it's almost always monitored and kept track of.

You don't do bitcoin. Bitcoin is impractical. We are talking about crypto in general, not just bitcoin. Nowadays you can for example get xlm from a cex, move it to your wallet and send that. It's fast and with very low fees( lower than paypal etc). There's even a stablecoin you can exchange it for so you dont have to worry about price swings.
HeadsUpHigh··on Why blockchain is not yet working (2018)
>What are some concrete examples?

I like how you can use a PoS blockchain to earn interest on your coins. Cardano can do this without moving your coins to another wallet, xlm can do it but you need to trust the other party. Currently there are enough people in the world without banking access that this could make a huge difference to them.

Tesla wants to buy not mine $1.5b bitcoin. Probably as a hedge against potential inflation in the next few months, regardless of the fanfare around the investment.

Quora imo is a horrible website and I rarely find actually good advice on it. At this point I actively avoid clicking on it's links because of how aggressive they are towards non logged users.

This is one of the markets some alt coins with low transaction fees and high number of transactions per second try to tackle.

>when the coin is overvalued

Or undervalued. If you are speculating on exchanges on a daily basis it doesn't matter but for long term holding, which is the easiest strategy for most retail investors it's not a bad thing.

People who have been through this cyclic process already are looking towards the end of the current market run and are suggesting something like a 60% btc 30% eth 10% altcoins that might spike a lot for holding until the next cycle. Why? Because btc/eth are "stable", which in crypto terms they are. This is an important change in sentiment.

Don't forget that gold has different sell and buy prices to discourage speculating on it's pricing( just enough so that right about anything will outperform it in the relevant timeframes). It wouldn't be unreasonable for something similar to happen to asset types of crypto.

HeadsUpHigh··on Wayland is not ready as a 1:1 compatible Xorg replacement just yet
>It's the sort of thing that seems attractive to junior developers, but more seasoned folks know that the legacy system contains years of embedded knowledge and workarounds for "real world" issues.

The Wayland developers are the same people who have been building all these workarounds for xorg for decades. This isn't a new thing coming out of nowhere. When the old guard is telling you that their own work needs to be replaced, I'd listen.

>Perhaps we did need a new display server, perhaps Wayland is conceptually better than Xorg, but it'll be many years before it reaches feature parity, if it ever does.

Good thing nobody forces you to use it and it's just one click away on the login screen from switching to xorg. In the meantime people who want to hack on the project can do so and ship their changes to users to test them plus those who do suffer from xorg issues( because yes, xorg doesn't do well on a lot of things that aren't even that modern despite all the workarounds for the "real world" issues it has) can use wayland right away.

Revenge killings are rare because perpetrators often don't walk away and if they do you might not walk away. There areas in my country where there are vendettas spanning generations.

HeadsUpHigh··on After a decade, NASA’s big rocket fails its first real test
Failure at NASA isn't like failure at SpaceX. This was the culmination of 10 years of simulations and pork jobs. For SpaceX its the culmination of a couple weeks of wielding on a tent using private money instead of direct public funds.

This is exactly the point of most anti-copyright parties.

The big EV industry doesn't want hydrogen to succeed!!! Are you even listening to yourself?
HeadsUpHigh··on Electric cars make up 54% of cars sold in Norway in 2020
There is plenty of material about why hydrogen isn't really better just a google away. Plenty of smart people have evaluated it and realized it's not worth it. Toyota is the only company left that still pretends that it's relevant... while slowly electrifying their fleet.
HeadsUpHigh··on Electric cars make up 54% of cars sold in Norway in 2020
Because they are known for having fast EVs. Having a team and losing would be a hit on their reputation, but having a team and winning wouldn't change much. So they have a lot to lose and little to gain.

For comparison I was paying €330 for a brand new 35 sqft apartment with 2 separate rooms, a small balcony, amazing heat and noise insulation, 5 minutes from a bus stop and ample parking, all in a nice area without very dense buildings. And this was considered expensive. The reduced price here is still x10...

Tesla had a direct path to drop the price by using economies of scale. If you just can't grow a crop, it just won't work. This is more akin to saying that battery density is low enough that it only works up to scooters.

Cargo ships are a tiny part of the entire supply chain and provide an incredibly efficient service. It's environmentally friendlier to buy something that's in season in the other hemisphere and ship it to you than to grow it locally off season.
