there's a huge difference between "feature that mostly works and is kinda neat" and "5000 pound robot relies on this to work all the time or people will probably get hurt at minimum" in how much you should trust a feature.

Doesn't really matter if an imgTo3d script gets a face's depth map inverted, kinda problematic if your car doesn't think there's something where there is.

HeWhoLurksLate··on AI’s coding evolution hinges on collaboration and trust
I think this means that personal branding is going to get even more important than it already is (for example, people watching movies specifically because of Ryan Reynolds, or avoiding them because of Jared Leto)
HeWhoLurksLate··on Is 4chan the perfect Pirate Bay poster child to justify wider UK site-blocking?
Let me correct that for you: No one likes hearing hypocrisy from the other side's politicians
HeWhoLurksLate··on Why LLMs can't really build software
...then there are the other fun ones, like not wanting to tell people things exist that they don't have access to, like Github returning 404 errors for private repositories you know exist when you aren't logged into an account that has access to them.
HeWhoLurksLate··on Ex-Waymo engineers launch Bedrock Robotics to automate construction
My university has an auto shop for this very reason - at a certain size, it makes more sense to care for your own fleet than it does to contract it out, even though the auto fleet peeps have approximately zero overlap with educational goals.

I think the difference is that the pipelines for becoming a junior software developer are well-documented online, where the pipeline for being a "Junior Developer" in the trades is generally accomplished by calling and walking into places and asking for a job still.
HeWhoLurksLate··on Using Home Assistant, adguard home and an $8 smart outlet to avoid brain rot
This is probably in the same vein as people finding out they have ADHD by taking drugs at a party and being able to focus for the first time in their lives; you might consider getting a psych eval
HeWhoLurksLate··on Is there a half-life for the success rates of AI agents?
I've found issues like this happen extremely quickly with ChatGPT's image generation features - if I tell it to put a particular logo in, the first iteration looks okay, while anything after that starts to look more and more cursed / mutant.
HeWhoLurksLate··on Honda conducts successful launch and landing of experimental reusable rocket
I just want to know who will get the J.D. Power Initial Quality Award and then subsequently fall apart five minutes after it gets judged (lookin at you, Stellantis)
HeWhoLurksLate··on Google restricts Android sideloading
> More than an hour?

That's usually how long it takes me to get an FFMPEG command I'm planning to use more than once right

HeWhoLurksLate··on The impossible predicament of the death newts
I can't remember who said it originally, but it amuses me to no end that the only reason our society works as well as it does is a mutual agreement to follow some lines and not play bumper cars
HeWhoLurksLate··on The Rise and Fall of Toys 'R' Us (2018)
interestingly, 7-11 is doing quite well in Texas, where it operates under the brand Stripes. They also have kitchens in some called “Laredo Taco” that sell primarily Mexican food and are quite beloved, esp. by blue collar workers
HeWhoLurksLate··on LMD: A new, less wasteful metal 3D printing technique
An even better question is what are the metal's granular properties like? Most metal prints are fairly isotropic, but their strength compared to a machined sample is significantly worse.
HeWhoLurksLate··on Why we built Vade Studio in Clojure
One of the things I've noticed is that people who just do the thing, take note of what's annoying, and fix the most annoying things about a process later on tend to make the most impressive dents in a system or process, especially since they spend time mulling over the idea in their head and so by the time they implement, they aren't "zero-shotting" a solution to what's generally a complex issue.
HeWhoLurksLate··on What happened to the world's largest tube TV? [video]
Not necessarily true- the majority of people don't know about 3-2-1 backup strategy and I've seen hundreds of "help! my { phone | SD card | computer } died and I lost all my family photos" posts
HeWhoLurksLate··on Chatbot hinted a kid should kill his parents over screen time limits: lawsuit
> It can't do "software development."

Sure, but it's also currently a heck of a lot faster than a junior dev at iterating

HeWhoLurksLate··on Zizmor would have caught the Ultralytics workflow vulnerability
Wow, I had no clue about how many ways it was possible to get burned with Actions - as an ME nerd, I've set up a few CI/CD workflows, and if I recall correctly, while I was reading through the documentation for GitHub Actions (circa 2022) there wasn't any mention of cybersecurity best practices in the general docs. Is that generally considered best practice, or at least acceptable?

I'm not a programmer by trade- I generally write one-off or two-off code, but that's changing as I get deeper into simulation land. For me, reading the entirety of the docs is something that generally happens only when I'm troubleshooting something or an LLM dragged me significantly further than my understanding and I have to go learn how a library or API works.

For PPE: an effective respirator is not that expensive, should be wearing them and safety glasses for sanding as well. Only extra PPE you really need for acetone smoothing is some nitrile / latex gloves, and those are fairly standard in shop / art environments anywho.

Also, MEK, Methyl Ethyl Ketone, apparently smooths PLA out quite well too, but if you can print in ABS I would already be doing that for finished products anywho.

HeWhoLurksLate··on Larry Tesler pioneered cut-and-paste, the one-button mouse, WYSIWYG (2005)
while writing documentation in Markdown, I almost always have the preview open in split-screen in vscode, not because I need it, but mostly to make sure that the other people reading my work have a good experience.

HeWhoLurksLate··on CrowdStrike fixes start at "reboot up to 15 times", gets more complex from there
Out of curiosity, what set of requirements would that be for?

Lead solder hardly smells at all, and if it does, it's more likely to be the flux that smells and gives you cancer.
HeWhoLurksLate··on The Snapdragon X Elite's Adreno iGPU

It is amusing to me in a comment about a particular group only seeing hammers and nails that the presented solution focuses specifically on a singular technology / implementation.

An interesting point from a family member who works in residential / commercial HVAC - there's enough of an improvement from installing high efficiency air filters that they can pay for themselves in increased student attendance.
