HackerThemAll··on FreeBSD 14.4-Release Announcement
Apple should regularly donate to FreeBSD Foundation. They make countless billions USD thanks to FreeBSD. 1M or 5M a year would be a penny to them, but would be a world to the Foundation, which would be able to improve FreeBSD a lot.
HackerThemAll··on Fil-C is safer than Rust
Yeah, thanks, but no. That's a contrived example. If this "Fil-C" is so fine, why isn't everything compiled with it?
HackerThemAll··on A new Oracle Solaris Common Build Environment (CBE) release
I have not touched anything related to Oracle for as long as I remember.
HackerThemAll··on Zed new terms required to be 18 years old
Zed has lost its momentum for me. I will stick to VSCode and its various incarnations, then Notepad++ and vim for other needs.
HackerThemAll··on Making Firefox's right-click not suck with about:config
Yeah, former Opera employee making fun from Firefox. So cool.

To respond: Remember you just took Google software, changed skin, added more telemetry and spying eyes, and call it a browser.

HackerThemAll··on I dropped our production database and now pay 10% more for AWS
Again the same crying dev baby that did not make backups, blaming AI on the issue. Idiocracy is happening right before our eyes.
HackerThemAll··on Claude Code wiped our production database with a Terraform command
Yeah, sure, blame Claude for not having backups. Sure do.
HackerThemAll··on /e/OS is a complete, fully “deGoogled” mobile ecosystem
I'm waiting for de-Appled iPhone ecosystem then.
HackerThemAll··on America, and probably the world, stands on a precipice
Now you see the real reason behind changing the name from Department of Defense to Department of War. It's what Republicans really want.
HackerThemAll··on What does " 2>&1 " mean?
> bash's syntax is so weird

What should be the syntax according to contemporary IT people? JSON? YAML? Or just LLM prompt?

HackerThemAll··on Windows 11 Notepad to support Markdown
No, thank you, it's become slow as hell in Windows 11, just like the Explorer and the Windows itself. Windows is a piece of garbage.
HackerThemAll··on Turing Completeness of GNU find
We should run Doom on it, then.
HackerThemAll··on OpenAI resets spending expectations, from $1.4T to $600B
Ponzi scheme. Scam. I don't trust OpenAI a tiny bit.
HackerThemAll··on I’m joining OpenAI
"OpenAI has made strong commitments to enable me to dedicate my time to it and already sponsors the project."

The bankrupt company sponsors anything, that sounds credible.

HackerThemAll··on Show HN: I wrote a technical history book on Lisp
"arguably the most powerful programming language in the history of computing"

That can be said about quite a few languages, Forth included. The most powerful != easy to use and/or comprehend.

HackerThemAll··on Testing Postgres race conditions with synchronization barriers
Javascript developers learn kindergarten basics of transactions and SQL. LOL. Is it the camp "we don't need a degree to be programmers"?
HackerThemAll··on Discord will require a face scan or ID for full access next month
I have my Gmail account since they were on invitations, circa 2004, and Google certainly knows this. That's the ultimate proof I'm an adult :-) That information could be exposed and used by 3rd parties.
HackerThemAll··on Unlocking high-performance PostgreSQL with key memory optimizations
"How do we size shared_buffers? A common starting rule of thumb is:"

I have an improved rule of thumb:

Give a lot of RAM. Give it all the RAM you can. And then buy some more and also give it to shared_buffers. Buffering data in RAM/CPU cache is crucial for performance.

HackerThemAll··on I now assume that all ads on Apple news are scams
All ads are scams anyway, why limit them to Apple news?

If anybody pushes anything down your throat, that's the thing you DON'T need. As simple as that. If you need something, you'll find it yourself.

HackerThemAll··on Bye Bye Humanity: The Potential AMOC Collapse
Current society can quickly collapse if the internet or AI data centers are shut down. All supply chains and finance are based on it. The shutdown can easily happen if the climate cools down, given that more electricity would be needed to heat houses, and we're already on the verge of efficiency of electric systems.
HackerThemAll··on Bye Bye Humanity: The Potential AMOC Collapse
My amateurish view of this tells me that the amount of heat that's going to concentrate in Mexican Gulf (yes, Mexican) should Gulf Stream slow down/stop, will have enough power to push the hot waters through to the north anyway. The heat cannot just accumulate in the Gulf indefinitely. The Gulf Stream may hiccup, but it'll eventually restart/resume.
HackerThemAll··on OpenClaw is changing my life
If my aim was to be a manager, I would have graduated a business university. But I want to have my hands and head dirty of programming, administering, and doing other technical stuff. I'm not going to manage, be it people or bots. So no, sorry.

And 99% those AI-created "amazing projects" are going to be dead or meaningless in due time, rather sooner than later. Wasted energy and water, not to mention the author's lifetime.

HackerThemAll··on No More Hidden Changes: How MySQL 9.6 Transforms Foreign Key Management
I prefer PostgreSQL. Don't see any advantage of MySQL/Maria.
HackerThemAll··on Proton spam and the AI consent problem
Just browse their Facebook profile. It's enough of an evidence. If that's not enough, just like couple of their posts and you're gonna witness the b.s. in their ads.
HackerThemAll··on In praise of –dry-run
Really? Should I be snapshotting the volume before every "rm"? Even if it's a part of routine file exchanges between machines? (As it happens for many production lines, especially older ones).

I think the current semantic of "rm" works fine. But I understand the new world where we'll perhaps gonna be deleting single files using Terraform or cluster of machines, or possibly LLMs/AI agents.

HackerThemAll··on In praise of –dry-run
> That's why I prefer Terraform's approach of having a "plan" mode. It doesn't just tell you what it would do but does so in the form of a plan it can later execute programmatically. Then, if any of the assumptions made during planning have changed, it can abort and roll back.

And how do you imagine doing that for the "rm" command?

HackerThemAll··on The Book of PF, 4th edition
https://www.amazon.com/Compiler-Construction-Monographs-Comp...

This one is my favorite.

HackerThemAll··on Proton spam and the AI consent problem
I lost all respect for Proton. They've been running ragebait ad campaign on Facebook, maybe also on other media, I don't know that, with that rage especially targeted at Google, spreading fake information and hate.
HackerThemAll··on ISO PDF spec is getting Brotli – ~20 % smaller documents with no quality loss
I think this was the main reason (from the linked article) LOL:

"Brotli is a compression algorithm developed by Google."

They have no idea about Zstandard nor ANS/FSE comparing it with LZ77.

Sheer incompetence.

HackerThemAll··on UK police used Copilot AI "hallucination" when banning football fans
Copilot is the stupidest of them all. And I suspect the UK police used either free or cheap version, which is even more stupid.
