Gud··on Understanding ChatGPT Work
Me too, it is a crystal clear boundary between me and the LLM. They might have access to my most precious code, but at least they don't have access to my browsing history.

Not as well as "uBlock origin". Why do you accept this behaviour from Google?
Gud··on Google Has Removed MV2 Extensions from the Chrome Web Store, Including UBO
Why would it not be, "Since Google is an advertising company, it stands to reason they want to squash the open web and make it a platform for them to serve advertisement and increase their margin"?

That was always the obvious answer.

Those ARE the worst offenders. And you can easily avoid 80% off that list.

It sounds like the comment you replied to is aware of that, but prefer his (sisters) kindle to remain functional with USB transfer, hence airplane mode to prevent any unwanted software updates.

Funny how many people shit on Firefox in this thread. To some of us it was ALWAYS OBVIOUS this was going to happen. Google is an advertisement company, after all. “Chrome is better still except for the shit we’re getting rammed down our throats”

Firefox <3 open web <3 corporate demons </3

Gud··on Google Has Removed MV2 Extensions from the Chrome Web Store, Including UBO
No it didn’t? People(web devs) jumped to Chrome because Google advertised it heavily.

I never did because I remember internet explorer and lack of transparent PNG support.

Why should Amazon be involved at all? Why should they know my reading habits?
Gud··on Transfer files over an Ethernet patch cable
Buy some cheap computer, pop in a few NICs, setup a FreeBSD or OpenBSD gateway, including DNS and some other goodies.

And by cheap, any $10 relic will do.

You’ll find their manuals very informative.

Gud··on FreeCORE TrueNAS Core – Continued
For servers, especially file servers, FreeBSD is superior to any Linux distribution, in my opinion.
Gud··on Suica, Japan's First IC Transit Card
As long as there is a barrier, and as long as I have to actively be doing something while moving around, it's a poor system. I enable my travel when I leave home ideally, and and stop it when I have reached my destination.

Not at a location most convenient for the train operator.

Gud··on Suica, Japan's First IC Transit Card
Ok, even as a tourist I prefer not to have to fiddle with my card on every ride. I can't comprehend how people can prefer the tap in/tap off. Seems like another unnecessary inconvenience in life to me. Additionally, SBB offers many different ways of purchasing tickets in the app(week ticket, 24 hour pass, etc, etc).
Gud··on Suica, Japan's First IC Transit Card
The problem is that the tap in/tap off is an unnecessary inconvenience. I often travel with suitcases(always on the road for my work) and it's a pain in the ass sometimes due to the mechanism in my way.

Why should I have to fiddle with some card, just to verify I've paid? Every day, for the rest of my life?

I prefer the Swiss way, where there are random checks. These random checks are done everywhere else anyway. It just seems that these boundaries have been put in place because some people believe that they are necessary. They may be necessary in some locations(London, like you mentioned) but I doubt they are necessary in Japan.

Gud··on Suica, Japan's First IC Transit Card
I typically swipe at home before leaving and leave the automatic swipe off, on. Otherwise I swipe off at my desk at the office.
Gud··on Suica, Japan's First IC Transit Card
I've used many similar systems. Netherlands has an identical system.

I prefer when there are no turnstiles or other forms of gates blocking my way. Just step onto the train.

Gud··on Suica, Japan's First IC Transit Card
Ok, this might sound great but it's really not.

I live in Switzerland, and they don't use a tap in/tap out system at all. There are no barriers to enter the station, anywhere.

There are multiple ways to purchase a ticket, I usually use the app Fairtiq or the official SBB app, where I swipe right before boarding the train/tram/bus(it's a national system, so even works on the regional networks) and swipe left when I'm done with my travel.

It then calculates the best price for me. If I do multiple journeys, it will know what I should have gotten a 24 hour pass, and subsequent travel is free.

tap in/tap off sucks no matter how good the system is. It is fundamentally a wrong think.

I travel by public transport in many countries, I travel over the world for work, it is my preferred mode of transport. Switzerland has by far the best ideas. Luxembourg is great as well, totally free, but small.

No actually, I do value that as well.

I still don’t think you’re right.

People can differentiate quality from shit.

Gud··on The turbulent AI era is here
Doubtful. These tools will be more useful in capable hands than in the hands of a drooling idiot.

In 2000, I was 14 years old and hosting my own websites(in PHP) on a FreeBSD box at home, on a 10/10 connection, on hand me down hardware from a school sysadmin.

This was in Stockholm where we have good internet.

Certainly a skilled adult could get away with less than $100 in server costs.

Gud··on Asahi Linux Progress Report: Linux 7.2
No, repair ability is only important if it’s crappy quality to begin with.
Gud··on Asahi Linux Progress Report: Linux 7.2
I agree.

I’ve been a big Lenovo fan, settled on the X1 carbon. I’ve had three of them, G5, G6 and G9. The USB-C port broke on both G6 and G9 models. Apparently it’s a common problem. Unfortunately the ports are soldered directly on the motherboard making it difficult to fix(should be a small separate board for easy replacement). I was going to desolder and replace the ports, but haven’t gotten around to it.

I’m now using a MacBook Pro M2.

You are overthinking this.

Donald Trump wants to make the USA bigger. It will put him in the history books. He also wants a lot of chaos so he can be bribed to stop(he won’t).

There is no master plan, just greed.

Gud··on The turbulent AI era is here
Not really. The planet is crowded, currently with mostly productive members of society.

For the ultra rich psychos who run the show, do you really think they want poor people hanging around? When we can be wiped out in a few months?

Consider the pure greed Donald Trump is displaying. Now imagine that the 1000 most powerful people are the same, except they are smart enough to at least not rub it in peoples faces on live television.

They hate you, and want you dead.

Gud··on The turbulent AI era is here
Not everywhere. Switzerland has a direct democracy, which should be emulated by the rest of the world.

https://www.aboutswitzerland.eda.admin.ch/en/direct-democrac...

FWIW I am not from Switzerland, I only live there. Direct democracy works great.

Still supported, by the way. Does Apple support your Macintosh SE/30 still? I believe Linux was also supported.
