Gualdrapo··on Windows 10 refugees flock to Linux in what devs call their "biggest launch"
> if you want to use Linux, you need to buy certified hardware

Or test yours with a live distro beforehand

Gualdrapo··on Acrobat is intrusive, slow and non-customizable
And even if you were you could manage to earn a living without using Adobe stuff. Ask David Revoy, for example.

Gualdrapo··on I almost got hacked by a 'job interview'
I've been posting on HN's "who wants to be hired" and "freelancer" posts, and for the last couple months all I've got have been suspiciously similar emails from randoms asking me to schedule an online interview for a great "opportunity". They never state exactly what that "opportunity" is about. After some hours of not participating on it they will write again - have got three of them, from different gmail emails, all of them following the same script.
Gualdrapo··on CSS for Styling a Markdown Post
The article mentions targeting both `<picture>` and `<img>` elements, but that is redundant - just target `<img>`s. `<picture>` has to have one `<img>` node anyway.
Gualdrapo··on Scientists create 'Superwood' that's 10 times stronger than steel
Heard a bit of noise for a while saying graphene was going to be the future of bicycles, but in the end it could be wood...?

Gualdrapo··on LineageOS 23
Got a Xperia Z1 in 2013. Sony stopped updating it at some point in 2014-2015, which is stupid, but the hardware was still like new (which is the great thing about Sony phones) so I rooted it and managed to install it. Can't remember if it was already named "LineageOS" or "CyanogenMod" at the time. However, it lasted with me until nov. 2020 when I dropped and the screen cracked, made it to be changed but the replacement was kinda bad so used it as an excuse to get a 1ii.

I did the same with this "new" phone, that is going to be 5 years with me - since also got that only-two-years-of-updates thing, threw LineageOS on it and it's going as new.

So as I said the last time I saw a post about it in here, thanks to LineageOS I can use a phone for way more than they are set out to be forgotten. It's a great project and it's really sad Google are making things harder for them for the sake of "security".

Gualdrapo··on Ask HN: What's the best hackable smart TV?
I long for a Framework-like TV.

Gualdrapo··on Ig Nobel Prize: UVC light sterilizes shoes, kills odor
Recently heard that about a study saying UV light can disable airbone allergens in a short time. And now this make it seem there's going to be a big demand for UV lights
Gualdrapo··on Why warm countries are poorer
As a colombian I feel like in current times that situation is pretty much the opposite - though I feel like most people here are "hot blooded", i.e. they're temperamental on many times they do not give critical thinking or learning stuff any value and take decisions on the moment.

On the other hand I reckon this feeling is happening a lot in "richer" countries. I just feel like though we gain political independence from Spain we are yet to gain "economical" independence. Add corruption and the same people ruling the country for more than 200 years and you got the current situation where kids in the northest part of the country were starving to death and at the same time some daddy's boys ask on r/Colombia or r/Bogota why the whole country does not have Netflix.

Gualdrapo··on The Other Linux Logo
That's the one (besides OG Tux) I liked most. Though the "glassy" original Tux wasn't bad at all.

Gualdrapo··on Typst: A Possible LaTeX Replacement
> It would be nice if Typst could be a LaTeX replacement that makes actually layout and designing the document approachable

Those goals fall way out of the scope of LaTeX (and of course of Typst). If you want to have more control and power into a document's design, there's ConTeXt - as a graphic designer I just love it and can't imagine myself replacing it with LaTeX or Typst.

But as you said, if you want to concentrate on writing your text without thinking too much about its design, LaTeX or Typst are great for that.

Gualdrapo··on This month in Servo: variable fonts, network tools, SVG
> rebuilding huge projects from scratch is usually a commercially suicidal mission

Yeah, CEO's absurd salaries should come first.

/s

(Though in all fairness I find even more upsetting that The Linux Foundation, the org that now "owns" Servo, is sill not spending a single dime on its development)

Gualdrapo··on Watches Are for the Poor
Somewhat recently here in Bogotá police have learned of criminal organizations dedicated to steal expensive watches from wealthy people. It seems to me like since a year ago or so it was kind of frequent to hear someone got stolen their rolex that went around COP$50000000 (around US$12950). President, senators, ministers and the like are earning around the same amount each month, which is around 50x the minimum wage (and as with many "third world" countries, in many cases a minimum wage is the only income for an entire family). Not long ago there were children dying of starvation in the northest part of the country.

Colombia still rakes the top 10 of most unequal countries in the world [0], recently it was in the top 3.

Gualdrapo··on Trumpcard (Official US Government Website)
Me too. Reminds me of the Apple Garamond family Apple used to use in the 90s, though I'm too sleepy by now to check if they're the same. No idea why they stopped using it, it's beautiful.
Gualdrapo··on Ask HN: Has anyone else been unemployed for over two years?
The woman I thought was the love of my life left me for another man, made me feel guilty about it with a immense net of lies just to not be held accountable so I went into chronic depression. Quit my job at uni in october 2015 just so to not be able to see her ever again. Was unemployed until march 2018. Was broke, heartbroken and humillated not only by my ex but even by my own sister, lost my best friend in the world in part because I was broke and couldn't do much about it, even lost almost all my hair all of a sudden... It was definitely the worst thing I've ever had to endure.

Once I was lucky enough to get a miserable job I could began from the ground up all over again. It hasn't been easy but as the time passed felt like I was regaining my inner peace and as I see it now that is the source of happiness. Not everything is perfect but in 2016-2017 I couldn't even imagine I would escape that situation.

Am a bit scared because the project I'm working on is reaching its final stages so I can be completely unemployed anytime soon once again, but at least this time I'm prepared for it and am doing much better than 10 years ago.

I wish nobody ever has to go through a situation like this. Hoping you all are doing great.

Gualdrapo··on Ask HN: Dark Mode for HN?
Some sites (and something I did while refactoring my portfolio) is levarage that to CSS. You can set is as to read the light/dark mode setting from the OS and provide a "toggle" to let the user choose between light and dark. This doesn't even need JS, just a couple hidden `<input type="radio">`s and some bits of CSS.

Although as I've said in another comment, things like this, "go to the top" buttons, cookie banners and the like should be task of the web browser, not of the website.

Gualdrapo··on YouTube addresses lower view counts which seem to be caused by ad blockers
Yesterday I wanted to watch a video of a song which was made originally english. It was auto translating lyrics to german. I just speak some spanish and some english. Couldn't decide if I should be annoyed with it translating to a language I just know a handful of words or should be thankful because it's trying to help me learn more of it.
Gualdrapo··on I feel Apple has lost its alignment with me and other long-time customers
A few days ago I tried to express a similar opinion here - regarding design and taking in account the liquid glass thing and the iphone air, it feels they are doing "innovation" for the sake of "innovation", and got downvoted. They're doing (arguably) huge improvements in processing and computing yet they want to disrupt user experience just because.
Gualdrapo··on Wanted to spy on my dog, ended up spying on TP-Link
Got one for my house but what really annoyed me was that I wasn't able to set a fixed IP for it

Gualdrapo··on Four-year wedding crasher mystery solved
Or the stories about Musk firing people for the smallest nuissance, and then their immediate superior sending the "fired" person to another department the day after - next time Musk would see that person and not remember he "fired" them
Gualdrapo··on Why our website looks like an operating system
Things like this makes me think that controls for stuff like content density (line height, text width...), per-page dark mode, "scroll to top" and cookie banners should be a task of the web browser/user agent, not of each website.
Gualdrapo··on Brazil's Supreme Court finds Bolsonaro guilty of plotting military coup
We (Colombia) barely joined that club a few weeks ago for a few days, but corruption and the dark powers that have ruled this country for a long time kept reigning.
Gualdrapo··on All You Need Is SSH
> I also prefer a clicky-clicky media player over MPV

Not sure what do you mean by that; if you compile mpv with lua support (in case your distro/whatever doesn't ship it that way, that is) you get a clicky-clicky little osd thing within the mpv window that suffices (back, forward, playback control, volume...)

Gualdrapo··on iPhone Air
This with the glass ui thing feels like now they're doing "innovation" for the sake of "innovation". But as someone said on the other thread about this thing (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=45185576), at this point they could just make a cardboard phone, wrap it with some fancy words and would sell it like crazy.
Gualdrapo··on Exploring Grid-Aware Websites
My PC is not that ultra high-end or something and sometimes doesn't like websites with fancy stuff, but with this one isn't going that bad. Yes, the scrolling thing is weird - but the website offers an option to disable animations, so at least there's that.
