GreenWatermelon··on Europe is in danger of regulating its tech market out of existence
Big tech didn't create linux or git. Big tech isn't working on Firefox or Kagi.

Big tech created windows, chrome, and ads. Big tech puts ads in everything, everywhere, all the time.

I'd say big tech going away is a good thing. We need more linixes, firefoxes, wnd Kagis.

This is less a nitpick and more moving the goalpost. GP Talked about innovation, while you argue job creation.
GreenWatermelon··on Europe is in danger of regulating its tech market out of existence
> No utility you say? i’d argue all of this is relevant to consumers and/or businesses in europe: > > • Microsoft windows > > • microsoft office (excel, etc) > > • google search > > • google maps > > • gmail and yahoo mail > > • smartphones > > • space-x (affordable satellite launches - for accurate weather forecasts and GPS) > > • OpenAI (pioneering LLM’s from a product perspective) > > • Visa and Mastercard networks > > • AWS / Azure / GCP > > • Adobe (photoshop, etc) > > • Zoom / Webex (Skype is an exception, created in europe) > > • Salesforce > > • DocuSign > > • AutoCAD > > I can list more if you’d like…this was literally off the top of my head. All of these businesses and products were created in the united states, some with VC funding. They employ hundreds or thousands of engineers, product managers, etc. They provide critical business capabilities to businesses around the world. Some are user facing as well. > > As far as critical business software Europe has created Skype, SAP, and i think that’s it? From the hardware side, major kudos for ASML and Airbus. > > The stuff you read about in the news is focused on bad actors and toxic social media junk. thats a small piece of big tech.

Honestly, this comment inadvertently proves the need to quarantine US tech. Almost every product you listed is utter garbage, especially Windows.

There's nothing inherently better about Windows than Linux. Libre Office suit can become much better than MS Office if ot got enough suppoet - support that just goes away to M$ contracts.

Google search has become utter garbage.

Hetzner exists, and more Cloud companies would exist if it weren't for America's Big Tech having a competitive advantage due to their sheer size.

Adobe is a shit company with shit behavior. I'd welcome its implosion anytime. Again, if the billions siphoned away for their licenses was spent on FOSS alternatives, we'd end up with such healthier ecosystem.

Visa and Mastercard are leas innovation and more completely regulated duopoly at this point.

Also, with the exception of SpaceX, I'd gladly welcome the complete implosion of all companies you mentioned. I'd love to watch them burn to cinders, while the world finally breathes free.

It does so by creating equally as many incredibly miserable people. Homelessness is rampant on the US and the average American is one health emergency away from poverty. That's also the same country well known for saddling college students with life-crippling debts.

This is a clear example of slippery slope fallacy.
GreenWatermelon··on Open source AI is the path forward
Meta open sources its tools: React, GraphQL, PyTorch, and now these new models. Meta seems to be about open sourcing tools, not providing open access to their platforms.

The AI model complements the platform, and their platform is the money maker. They hold the belief that open sourcing their tools benefit their platform on the long run, which is why they're doing it. And in doing so, they aren't under the control of any competitors.

I would say it's more like a grocery store providing free parking, a bus stop, self-checkout, online menu, and free delivery.

GreenWatermelon··on Open source AI is the path forward
Credits where due: Facebook didn't do that with React or PyTorch. Meta will reap benefit for sure, but they don't seem to be betting on selling the model itself, rather they will benefit from being at the forefront of a new ecosystem.
GreenWatermelon··on Open source AI is the path forward
Zuckerberg didn't really say anything about altruism. The point he was making is an explicit "I believe open models are best for our business"

He was clear in that one of their motivations is avoiding vendor lockin. He doesn't want Meta to be under the control of their competitors or other AI providers.

He also recognizes the value brought to his company by open sourcing products. Just look at React, PyTorch, and GraphQL. All industry standards, and all brought tremendous value to Facebook.

GreenWatermelon··on Open source AI is the path forward
The model is more akin to a python script than a compiled C binary. This is how I see it:

Training Code and dataset are analogous to the developer who wrote the script

Model and weights are end product that is then released

Inference Code is the runtime that could execute the code. That would be e.g. PyTorch, which can import the weights and run inference.

GreenWatermelon··on OpenAI CEO says company could become for-profit corporation, Information reports
This is currently the case. My takeaway is that Altman and Co want take OpenAI (the profit company) away from the nonprofit entity.

According to the article:

> the company is considering changing its governance structure to a for-profit business that the firm's nonprofit board doesn't control

GreenWatermelon··on OpenAI CEO says company could become for-profit corporation, Information reports
> In response to Reuters' queries about the report, OpenAI said: "We remain focused on building AI that benefits everyone. The nonprofit is core to our mission and will continue to exist."

Emphasis mine.

I find this response to be hilariously contradictory. How would becoming a for-profit help a non-profit mission.

It's worth noting that Anthropic is a public benefit company, which means it's not required to pursue profit at all costs.

GreenWatermelon··on We migrated from AWS to GCP with minimal downtime
The previous paragraph says:

> As of this writing, we could not find any existing tools to send a ZFS file system to S3 and download it from Cloud Storage, in real time. Most tools like z3 are used for backup purposes, but we needed to transfer filesystem chunks as quickly as possible.

So, they didn't rewrite anything.

There's no modern successor to Rails because Rails itself os still modern and very much up to date. The recent introduction of Stimulus allows to implement a SPA completely on rails (if they wanted) with the same simplicity present everywhere else in the framework.

I think the problem os being only a single witness claiming to have sighted them? The Loch Ness monster has more reported sightings, so a single witness, imo, is not enough to say with a large degree of certainty that there is a big cat roaming around.

I would even say it's only negatives.

But unfortunately, it will have to stay legal, otherwise people would still seek it through illegal means, possibly exposing themselves to much worse dangers.

It's the same problem with drugs (including Alcohol) and tobacco, they need to be legal in order to he regulated.

Which is pretty much the the thing keeping me from ditching edge, and the thing that made me use it in the first place. It just works.

I've tried the various hacks available for Firefox to achieve a similar result, but nothing comes close to Edge here. Closest I got to edge is Midori, though unfortunately that one is still pretty buggy.

GreenWatermelon··on Apple hit with over 1.8B euro EU antitrust fine in Spotify case
Or maybe the US is just too comfortable with being the home of multiple large criminal organizations? Said crime syndicates then actually get fined for committing crimes on countries with actual rule of law, unlike the oligarchic farce that is the US justice system.
GreenWatermelon··on Cousins are disappearing. Is this reshaping the experience of childhood?
> I just questioned things

Questioning things is how one truly reaches God. Your elders failed you.

Some people just hold beliefs because they were born with them, not because they necessarily believe in them. I know these types because I've lived my whole life around many of them. Thanks to them, I've come to despise the modern concept of organizated religions, though I still value religion itself.

This is why I tend to view modern religious leaders as parasites. They convince other people that they [the other people] can't understand religion on their own, that religion is mysterious and only those well versed may speak on the art.

By convincing people of such things, said people then outsource the job of thinking to those select few, and you're left with mindless brains who can't figure out the answers to a child's questions about God.

I ask myself questions, I always do, and I try to look for answers, for each question answered brings me one step closer to God, and by extension, brings me some measure of peace in life.

People who like to learn and improve as programmers do care. In fact, the article explains the value of all that additional stuff which implies there are those who DO care.

The article even provides a link to a search result showing multiple commits from people who learned from the fix.

That commit message is a treasure trove of knowledge.

One of the benefits of having religious beliefs is the piece of mind that comes with knowing that someone is keeping note of those sacrifices I make, and the life is especially not a race, and finishing dead last in the money race does not mean losing.

So yeah, we aren't suckers, and without us our civilization will collapse.
