Graphon1··on The De-Electrification of the U.S. Economy
> so the sooner that can switch over the electric, the sooner we can drop the 36% of energy being sourced from petroleum.

but it's not a 1:1 relationship. A lot of electricity in the US comes from burning petro-fuels like natural gas (if you count natural gas as a petro fuel) or coal.

There was a study[1] last year that argued that driving a Tesla in Ohio caused more pollution than driving a BMW 3-series, because the source of the Tesla's electricity was likely coal.

Graphon1··on How Utah Reduced Chronic Homelessness
> this whole celebration of reducing chronic homelessness is more likely just a PR piece.

No... that's not a fair comment.

We are measuring it. People are constantly going through rough patches and become homeless. In some cases, most cases, they get help "soon" and get into a home. In other cases, they don't. This article is about the latter cases.

Your statement suggests that the efforts to reduce chronic homelessness compete with efforts to help the temporarily homeless. The article doesn't suggest that is the case.

Habit, tradition, (Small-c) conservatism.

It's true we (most of us) don't absolutely need to kill animals for food. On the other hand there is a vast human momentum in the direction of raising, killing, and eating animals. That doesn't change overnight, or even in a generation or 5. It takes a long time to change such things.

My theory: It's for a similar reason that homosexuality has been taboo for so long. In the beginning, tribes needed to procreate in order to survive, and homosexuality didn't help with that, and it may have hurt. So it was written into old books: go forth and multiply, and don't have fun with those of the same gender. That won't produce offspring.

But now the challenges of survival do not involve "not enough offspring". So we no longer NEED to worry so much about homosexuality, not for 1000 years. And yet, the belief and habit of mind continues.

> The astronauts had faith in the laws of physics.

You have used an analogy here, in order to aid your point, but it is not valid. Laws of physics do not intersect with faith. At all.

oh, thank you for this. Really good stuff.

So are electric cars. Both are solvable problems, and will be solved as adoption increases.

I don't understand why a large structure is automatically an eyesore. It doesn't emit smoke. It's mostly pretty quiet. Are windfarms uglier than, say... a nicely constructed bridge like the SF Bay Bridge?
Graphon1··on Apple’s rotten appeal
> It is, as you even quoted, a one-off deal between Ireland and Apple.

no, the phrase referred to _possible_ one-off deals between Ireland and Apple. Just mentioning them does not cause them to appear.

See:

> the words “any aid” covers not only one-off deals between Ireland and Apple, but also any general provision...

Graphon1··on Apple’s rotten appeal
> Please remind me why is Apple dragged into this ?

Because if Ireland "loses", then Apple owes 14B Euro. So, Apple is an interested party.

> I have have to go through a lot of trouble to do my work on it (I work at a .NET shop), and I'm strongly considering just getting a Windows 10 laptop instead of dealing with this mess.

If you work at a .NET shop, why would you NOT use Windows 10? Seems like you're swimming against the current.

Graphon1··on The .zip file specification is flawed
Yep, it has nothing to do with PHP. It's easy to produce this kind of frankenfile with an incorrect cp command. Or with incorrect stream management using any zip library that emits streams.
Graphon1··on The .zip file specification is flawed
> it's impossible to 100% reliably include non-ASCII filenames inside a zip.

Yes, the spec does not accommodate this. However there are conventions among popular ZIP creation tools that allow it.

If the zip spec were governed by an open body, then this is the kind of thing that would get quickly fixed. (basically standardize the common practice already in use). I don't know why PKWARE never fixed the spec. Maybe because there's no money in it for them, and the pain for the industry is really not that severe.

> We just use an outdated system built to appease slaveholders that does not necessarily represent the bulk will of the people.

It may have been built with slave/free state "fairness" in mind, but even today the mechanism serves to level out the tyranny of the majority, from the states' perspective.

This project is yet another example of a thing someone built to solve some problem, but .... that someone didn't bother to explain just what the problem is, or why this solution is preferred over the other possible solutions.

A readme that describes only how to install a project, or the commands to type, is not sufficient. Every readme should start with a description of what the thing does, and why doing it this way is better.

> Imagine a society without justice/police in which people must fend for themselves. It would quickly deteriorate to the point wherein there would be a fair bit of violence.

that conclusion is not warranted by the premise. How about this as an alternative outcome: "Imagine a society in which people actively defend community values for themselves and in cooperation with a community of similarly concerned citizens. It would quickly stabilize into a mostly non-violent community."

What are police, but a group of people specifically dedicated by the community to a specific task? Just because there is no dedicated, professional person filling a role, does not mean the role will not be filled.

> there's nowhere on earth where a full tank of gas costs $150 (or even two full tanks).

My vehicle holds 30+ US gallons. Filling up once is USD$75 at Costco (yesterday). Figure $90 at a regular station. (depending on the price of gasoline.) Filling up twice will probably exceed $150.

The 30+ gallons get me about 500-540 miles typically.

ok, a receipt. How is this supposed to facilitate a recount? Not all voters will retain their receipts. Not all voters will retained receipts will re-present them in the event of the need of a recount.

Are you saying a recount will be unnecessary if E2E is done properly?

I read the linked article but didn't get it.

Another major difference:

iPhone was a platform. As more people bought the iphone,

- the phone became more attractive to 3rd party accessory makers (protective cases, cables, etc) and apps makers.

- the phone itself became more valuable to owners, as more complementary products became available.

- the phone became more valuable to Apple, who could get feedback and make the phone better.

The hockey stick on the analogous factors for Tesla is much shallower. The "complementary products" for owners of cars will be primarily recharge stations. Still few and far between.

There is no benefit to 3rd parties, that I see. No benefit to other stakeholders like utilities. And Tesla itself does not enjoy a growing, self-reinforcing cycle of value, as sales increase. It's really just economies of scale.

Some people construe foreign military adventures such as Iraq 1991 and Iraq 2003 as oil subsidies. Without those, oil markets would be less stable, and consequently oil would be much less attractive as a fuel.
