GrandMasterBirt··on Poll: Should we ban TechCrunch?
The simple fact of the mattter is... just make a blog post: "TC sucks ass" and make it good. It gets voted up, and vuala unofficial ban since nobody gives a shit.
GrandMasterBirt··on Why don't all whales have cancer?
it is very counter-intuitive... but then again evolution is.

whales don't get larger because they need to eat more. whales may be perfectly sized for their food supply. A theory.

In any case I am about at my limits of my understanding of biology :P

GrandMasterBirt··on Microsoft's Anti-Mac Ads Are Starting To Work
The article did show a massive downfall of consumers thinking Macs are awesome, and a rise of consumers thinking PCs are.
GrandMasterBirt··on Microsoft's Anti-Mac Ads Are Starting To Work
I hate mac because I need a mac to test with. If apple allowed us to VM macs, well, they wont be as horrible.

The point is that for the same price as an iMac I can get a pretty damn awesome gaming/compiling machine with 4 cores 8 gigs of ram, 260gig hdd, a nice video card, a giant monitor, and be able to upgrade it. Why would I want a mac?

But in the end, Mac OS is a superior OS compared to Windows XP. Congradulations Apple, you are finally able to compete with a 8 year old operating system. Thumbs up. Vista is actually pretty good, granted that some software is not compatible, but other than that it can work on the high-end PCs. People tend to compare vista's performance on a low-end pc with a high-end mac + mac os. Guess which one will run faster.

GrandMasterBirt··on Ruby on Rails and the importance of being stupid
Well actually that's not true. You use the best tools for the job. Front end can be done in PHP/Ruby/Django quickly while the entire back-end can be written in java or lisp. It all depends on what you need and what is the fastest, most scalable way to accomplish it.

That is true intelligence.

In my eyes Good and Trendy vs Good and Not Trendy is irrelevant. They are both good, so solve the problem.

Oh and "rails does not prove your smarts" should be: "Using technology X does not prove your smarts." because there will always be another X. Today its Rails, tomorrow its Open Sails, and the day after we all go back to Lisp.

GrandMasterBirt··on Dear American Airlines...
three.
GrandMasterBirt··on Tell HN: PG's 6 Unexpected Advantages of "Cheapness" in a Startup
When buying costs significantly less than building. To us geeks its inconceivable... "I can build one better" is a common phrase, but our managers keep us in check by saying "That is great, but through distributed cost THEY can build one better and cheaper!" which is true some of the time. It is usually our job to see if in fact we can build one better and cheaper or if that product is in fact superior. Geeks and Managers keep each other in check.
GrandMasterBirt··on Why did the peoples of the New World fail to invent the wheel?
The wheel in itself isn't anything grand. Its just a circular object which is quite useless on it's own.

You must invent 2 wheels, an axle and something to attach them to. Thus you have a use for the wheel as a starting point.

However wheels do not allow you to haul large super-heavy blocks for pyramid construction, you need a bunch of wooden sticks and manpower at best.

So yea a wheel was quite a unique invention. I am willing to bet 3000 years from now if humans still exist, someone will be saying "yea I can't believe people lived without this electricity thing... its so damn obvious! A two-year old can invent it."

GrandMasterBirt··on Building a startup for $5k? Really?
Its funny because that is the total budget of my project. :) It can be done, I just have to survive on instant noodles for only a few more years!
GrandMasterBirt··on Poll: Male or female?
Funny thing about the ratio, it holds true for developers at my job as well... :)
GrandMasterBirt··on A dispatch from the "programmers liberation front"
I disagree... A clumsy GUI is no excuse to dismiss the idea. We can always make a better GUI.

The point is this: If we can let the computer do the work, including during programming, then maybe we can focus more on design of the logic rather than keeping the entire programming model in our brain all the time and having to build a new one every time we hit new code.

Its definitely a very nice idea. Actually I can think of one program I worked on which is really a logical configuration tool which could use such a language instead of what it does and it will be simplified many times over.

GrandMasterBirt··on 1st International Competition on Plagiarism Detection
Sorry I misunderstood a bit, you are not required to give up your software, just the results it seems.
GrandMasterBirt··on 1st International Competition on Plagiarism Detection
Let me get this article and idea straight, incase I missed something...

Plagiarism is a problem for copyright holders since they want to ensure that they don't get plagiarized. HOWEVER it is a very expensive task and does not bear as much fruit as it might.

Automation of this will bring many many financial benefits to the copyright holders by reducing costs and increasing detection rates.

And all this work is to be done for a measly 500 euro??? I remember reading a job posting of a guy wanting someone to write a windows-like OS for $500, which is compatible with all windows apps but is more stable/secure/bug free.

Good luck getting competitors!

GrandMasterBirt··on Why Developers are Switching to Mac
Agreed. I tried, did not like. At least it is a viable solution.

My only big reason is because mac is a *nix under the hood. So I get all the nice scripting benefits and never have to deal with the windows shell scripting for dev purposes.

The hardware issue is a BIG fucking deal. I just got a mac mini at work for testing. ONLY ONE VIDEO PORT! So no dual screen. My PC? Oh no dual output? no problem a hundred bucks will solve that problem. To make it worse I can't upgrade my mini with a new card, gota get a new mini. (sorry just got = right before their new model was released)

So yea mac is a pain still. I want a nice motherboard like a PC has, and a nice case like a PC has, and as powerful/weak as a mac mini, for the mac mini price. If I need a new card Ill buy one. But that's not available, gota get me the $2000 power mac.

GrandMasterBirt··on Ask YC: Innocuous news?
Mostly Harmless News. Definitely what it should be. DON'T PANIC!
GrandMasterBirt··on Microsoft's Windows 7 Starter is a gift to Google
This is exactly right... MS is marketing it as windows 7 srtarter.. Should be windows notebook 1.0, hey 2.0 will come out at same time as windows 8. Cool. Even nicer if they changed the interface so the "netbook" feels like a netbook with a different ui and so on. This way nobody feels like they got the crummy windows and ms is milking em, they just got something different... And ms gets to sell dumbed down oses. Windows 7 just aint compatable with your pos notebook. Ok get windows notebook 1.0.

I still feel that selling a crippled os like xp vs xp pro is just plain ol evil... Vista is worse and no lessob learned

GrandMasterBirt··on Documents: FBI Spyware Has Been Snaring Extortionists, Hackers for Years
Fun question: Is it illegal for anti-viruses to detect and prevent this?
GrandMasterBirt··on The Google Bay
Right, torrentz.com has been around for a while they provide the search, and aggregate all the trackers found for the same torrent across different sites. However they don't host the trackers nor do they store any torrent files.

Torrent files in themselves are not illegal. They are simply pointers, its the trackers that are at fault. Trackers facilitate the ability to download illegal content, where torrents and a search engine don't in themselves, they just link to trackers.

On the same note... Go google :) I just find it funny.

GrandMasterBirt··on Idea: using code rather than templates to generate HTML
You all miss the point.

I've been thinking "templating system" for the last week none-stop. After seeing that project I just could not stop laughing. Yea why not code...

O well back to templating :)

GrandMasterBirt··on Tell HN: I didn't get a job due to a failed startup on my resume
My response:

1) You don't want that job. You really don't. They want in-the-box thinkers who would never question why they didn't get their raise this year. They want risk-averse programmers caz you can exploit them.

2) HN never lied. In probability there are no absolutes. if I or my manaders had to choose between two resumes of equal qualifications all would choose the one with a startup. I doubt any programmer I personally worked with would dissagree(or their manager). However there are exceptions to this rule. Some simply want the workers that work not the workers that think.

3) You really don't want to work for them... Do you want to work with people who never act on their dreams or hopes, only whine and complqin and sit down and shut the fuck up about problems at work when it comes to talking to managers or asking for appropriate pay for teir tallent (if they got it)? Every job I take I want to gain something. At 60 ill take the safe job and retire on it. Till then I want to wor with people who challenge me, not conformists.

So OP really consider is it so bad that you don't want that job? If you do FIGHT FOR IT. Call em tell em THEY WANTYOU! What do you have to lose? Only gain!

GrandMasterBirt··on Ask HN: Why is "exploiting" a website illegal?
The same exact argument as the OP holds for CSS... When is playing a DVD considered illegal? What if I just put it into an unlicensed player? What if the decryption algorithm is so simple a 14 year old can crack it? What if the algorithm has been cracked for 14 years?

DCMA says that breaking ANY encryption even if the encryption says take my data, treat it as binary and invert all the digits, and the first line contains those instructions, it is illegal to break the encryption because of DCMA.

So yea if its a 1 digit password its illegal to guess it.

GrandMasterBirt··on Ask HN: Where to find public business information?
Its a start :) Thanks.
GrandMasterBirt··on Ask HN: How to block links created by URL redirection sites
The fact is if your url is public with no restrictions whatsoever than you god bad security

The goal should be to ensure people going to your site know what your real address is.

GrandMasterBirt··on Military robots and the future of war [TED]
Just the title statement iteself...

I always felt... why freaken robots, just have the leaders challange each other in a game of chess (Kasparov will be king) and basically we make rules based on technological levels, population, and other things, how many advisors you are allowed to have.

They just duke it out and after the one game war is over. Everyone accepts the outcome and the new overlords come to claim the country.

Its basically the same shit as war, except less death. We just need to figure out a way to incorporate nukes and suicide bombing into this game and a way to ensure propper resources are spent. After that why bother sending armies... Just send the chess team.

GrandMasterBirt··on FBI seizes entire data center, won't say why
Sorry you are wrong. Look up the patriot act, you will be surprised just how much the government can get away with without ANY just cause.

The government no longer has a need to actually notify you of why you are being arrested. The government does not need just cause to arrest you. The government can even arrest you for "possible terrorism suspicion" and hold you indefinitely without trial.

Its OK because obviously the patriot act only applies to those damn Muslim terrorists hiding out in NYC... it can never be abused in any way... right?

GrandMasterBirt··on A time travel strategy game
Holy shit! First I thought how can this possibly work, I mean having two players playing at different time periods at the same time sounds iffy... but it looks like they might actually pull it off.

Thats pretty cool since time progresses, just in modifiable ways. And what is awesome there is how the progressions are propagated via "time waves" So even though you might have died in the past, you can still fix it in the present and undo your demise.

In any case we need to get some serious budget for these guys to work with :)

GrandMasterBirt··on [dead]
Without apt-get cow there is no linux. Period. Have you ever seen a linux without a cow? NO. Point made.

Now if erlang had a cow, maybe erlang would not suck so much.

GrandMasterBirt··on An open letter to Steve Jobs about approving the amber alert application
You people might be forgetting the most important point of abductions.

If you see an AMBER alert on the news, you will see it, and probably forget about it. You might see one on a site like www.woot.com but that is in a different state. Chances are you WONT REMEMBER IT.

Yet an application that can show you amber alerts for you current location would actually improve the chance that people would actually memorize the important faces and can always refer back to them immediately when seeing the child and boom press a button to submit a sighting or call immediately.

The fact that the information is readily available might be the missing key. Until now unless the picture is posted all over your neighborhood, you will have no idea that you just passed the abducted child.

The point is, this application has nothing but good intentions to the public good in mind, is free, is developed by volunteers, and can potentially do a lot of good in America... yet it is delayed for quite some time just because of apple's monopolizing process. The letter mostly points out that the apple store's only reason for being used is because there is no alternative, if one comes out or other platforms, it will be discarded because of apple's poor policies. The application is not perfect and the AMBER system in general has many theoretical flaws which are quite real even if given informational access through this app, but its not like this guy is making a profit from it.

GrandMasterBirt··on Ask HN: Luck or Hard Work?
Without hard work any lucky oportunity can fade away

Without luck you just work hard nonestop with little payoff

GrandMasterBirt··on Ask HN: hacker ways of fighting anxiety?
I just realized. What you can do is write down a list of all the things you can't do anything about at the moment. Every day change the list to see if anything can be taken off.

Every time you stress out look at the list. If its there remind yourself that there is nothing you can currently do, so let it be. Whatever happens will happen, but since you can't change it don't kill yourself over it.
