GrandMasterBirt··on Zap Reader - Download to your brain as fast as you can handle
regardless of the idea, its just like speed reading. You can get the information into your brain quick enough but it takes time to process and comprehend it. Speed reading denies you that processing capability so you "read" but you don't understand.
GrandMasterBirt··on Microsoft Research releases Barrelfish - OS optimized for multiple cores
I duno, its not that hard to believe that Microsoft can innovate. They do hire smart people. Sure Steve needs a nice kick in the bald-head, but that is beside the point.
GrandMasterBirt··on Efficient Editing With vim
I am still waiting for Vim FPS style (WSAD navigation keys, sniper scopes to skip words and all... sure it might need 3d graphics but hey, its the price you pay).
GrandMasterBirt··on Efficient Editing With vim
HA!

Also using vim will cause your escape key to be heavily hit constantly after typing anything especially if you are not sure what mode you are in, then only realizing you are not in vim period.

GrandMasterBirt··on USB Implementers Forum replies to Palm's complaint about Apple
I give you that.

Palm should invest more into software like songbird. Shit, palm should buy them and throw money at them. Songbird is meant to start of working like iTunes, but add support for MTP and such, is cross platform (makes developers happy), already has support for iPod, now all that is needed is support for Palm and a good marketing push.

You are right, Palm should not be trying to scratch away at apple's skin with a rubber band, but instead go for the arteries with a nice sharp knife.

GrandMasterBirt··on USB Implementers Forum replies to Palm's complaint about Apple
What if USB-IF authority is flushed down the tube. I am still rooting for palm. If palm wins this war we might finally see some good apple contenders. :P
GrandMasterBirt··on Google Has A Solution For Internet Explorer: Turn It Into Chrome
To be honest I think this is step 1, perhaps the best first step EVER MADE to move towards progress in HTML. With this plugin basically we can finally make messages on websites in the same way flash is installed to download google chrome and we have HTML5 compliance (once the spec is done and fully implemented). It will be great. Till now were stuck with HTML 4.1 until the entire world moves to IE8 AT LEAST. This is really a technological leap.
GrandMasterBirt··on Google Has A Solution For Internet Explorer: Turn It Into Chrome
Nope... Google might pay companies like dell and hp to sneak this baby into pre-installations. Woo. And I am sure there will be a google javascript thingy which detects IE and gives you a message about download this and supporting pages will magically run soooo much faster and look sooo much more awesome.
GrandMasterBirt··on Google Has A Solution For Internet Explorer: Turn It Into Chrome
That is disheartening to hear sorrow (wow the name matches). Honestly this just made my eyes glitter with hope that we can finally drop all IE support. Its an internal web-app and some terminals our users use must have IE6 because of compatibility issues with other crummy web apps (upgraded to 7 recently) which means we just need to test in google chrome and Firefox and were almost guaranteed to work in safari and guaranteed to work in actually all major browsers :). Its perfect! God I love google sometimes.
GrandMasterBirt··on What I've learned in 30 days since launch (and looking for a cofounder)
My co-worker ran radio stations and shows (independent) you have no idea how fucked up they can be!

Basically they want metrics on what you play, how much of it for national tracking so they can pay the artists/songwriters/record labels according to some fucked up laws. And you have to have special licenses to play the song online vs on a radio, etc. Its all insane. Basically get really familiar with online-radio broadcasting laws.

Also while I'd love to chat about co-founding there is no "about" page were I can at least have an email or number to contact.

GrandMasterBirt··on Switching to Linux: A Windows developer’s view
I whole-heartedly appologize.

Windows swapping algorithms suck big time. After coming back to work I need to wait for windows to swap eclipse/ff to ram... Wtf was it doing overnight that warrented a need for disk swap? Heavy thinking?

After leaving ubuntu on all night the performance tomorrow is as if I never left the keyboard.

Last job windows shutdown took 3 min, startup took 10. The system did suffer from memory leaks or appeared to since after like 2 weeks it had to be rebooted or it worked like crap. Coulda been antivirus pos software though. Reboots were also needed at times, just the nature of not having kill -9.

Another complaint: can't delete open files. Our av program broke our build caz we could not run cleanup scripts where applicable.

In any case after 3 month of bliss I have nightmares that next job ill be coding in windows. Maybe 7 aint so bad...

GrandMasterBirt··on Switching to Linux: A Windows developer’s view
I always been a windows developer. 3 mo ago my co-worker suggested I give linux a shot. Fuck it why not.

I realized the following:

1) Linux is more stable. (NEVER have to reboot it, unless I chose to conserve energy at night).

2) Linux boots faster. By the time linux boots, auto launches firefox and eclipse, windows is only reaching the desktop at which point its still 1-2 minutes before it becomes usable.

3) I still use the same tools in linux and windows (I still need a VM to run Toad). (Eclipse, grep, firefox, a linux command prompt (god cygwin is not as good as the real thing). Which is great since toad makes windows 95 appear stable. Putting toad in a vm is the best way to make it work well :). Also I get to test IE6,7,8 without any problems because I already have vms set up.

4) Multiple desktops = easier at times.

5) Windows made me need tools for mounting like sftp -> drive. Linux comes with sftpfs (ok fine u need to apt-get it). Its all free too so cost savings.

Switching to linux only raised one question: Why didn't I do it earlier.

The only problem is KDE fonts suck! Gnome ones are good out-of-the-box. Also KDE apps (like plasma) crashes like a wasted, doped-up, narcoleptic. Sooooo ubuntu, not kubuntu wins for me.

GrandMasterBirt··on Palm Rejects First App
You miss the point:

1) The APIs are in flux. Since Palm controls both APIs and the player, it can ensure that every update of the APIs will not break user expeirence.

2) Palm rejected the app from the palm store. Not banned the app from being used on webOS. In other words if I want to I can still install it, just not via. the app store. This is a huge difference from "apple app store or hack the firmware".

3) Palm immediately responded with details on how to fix this rejection.

4) The response time was quick.

5) Should we go on? You missing the point of the article.

GrandMasterBirt··on Potential Quicksort replacement in java.util.Arrays with new Dual-Pivot
Having N > 2 will require you to do a sort on the pivots :P Also you will require that the array size be at least N. N = 2 is a perfect size --

size = 0 -> no sort

size = 1 -> no sort

size = 2 -> pivots can be made, thus can be sorted

etc.

GrandMasterBirt··on Blu-Ray Still Blows
This is one of two points:

a) proprietary formats hurt independents

b) this is yet another anti-piracy heal of crap which will hurt consumers.

So yea I would not be concerned with blue ray. If the porn industry does not embrace it it won't be the next big thing.

However being that this is sony you are garanteed that they will cater to destroying independents and growing sony's monopoly.

GrandMasterBirt··on Blu-Ray Still Blows
I'm 25 and I think swearing is a perfect form of communication, not good or bad but a perfect one.

If I say fuck blue ray, I am IMMEDIATELY in few words getting the point accross that:

a) I dislike blue ray. b) I am having an very negative emotional reaction to it and want to convey this fact. c) Has an immediate effect.

Now just like any word it can be misused, however if you want the above 3 points conveyed then fuck is the perfect word to use.

GrandMasterBirt··on Critical: Vulnerabilities in Windows TCP/IP Could Allow Remote Code Execution
So what? MS found a security bug. Lets look on linux forms about all the security exploits fixed here and there.

MS fixed a critical bug. Yay. Why complain? Its better than Apple ignoring security bugs for years :)

GrandMasterBirt··on When Is A Good Business Model A Scam?
So basically... If there is no "insurance" so that mail a notarized copy of the birth certificate is enough to get a refund, you will never hit the law because the failure to provide an accurate prediction warrants the full refund.

If people get really rowdy, refund anyways. Shoot even if it's late refund. I'd be super lenient with it, you will make plenty of money.

GrandMasterBirt··on Microsoft Patent Checkmate
It is overdramatized but I have to point one thing out. MS can't sue linux. Period. Asside from bad PR there is one major problem: MS is already accused of monopolising the market. Thus suing linux providers will only hurt their cause. Instead it is better if other companies do it. Or maybe they do/don't care about it but they just want to rid themselves of these patents so they can claim "we are letting linux die because MS makes a superior product, not because we are trying to kill of linux with legal red-tape".

It may have been coencidence that linux got the stuff, it may be that AST made a profit buying and re-selling. In any case while MS might be evil we definately got another kind of evil sitting on the other fence keeping MS in check.

Nothing to see here, move along.

GrandMasterBirt··on The Web will dismember universities, just like newspapers
I never had it that way. Lived with my parents through college then went with make money or no rent.

1) Colleges DO NOT filter out bad students. I know good and bad programmers who graduated out of my college.

2) The student community formed is also very important. Student communities really foster creativity and help students encourage each other. Online you are alone, isolated. This is a general problem of online human interaction, you are more alone and isolated than usual.

GrandMasterBirt··on Best Optical Illusion of the Year
Actually... this illusion gets better. Move your HEAD left and right along the horizontal axis of the illusion. The angles would seem to change because you feel like you are moving across a place with two buildings.
GrandMasterBirt··on Ask HN: When are you most alert?
"# Afternoon tiredness can be overcome by coffee or a 20 minute nap (ideally both, since caffeine takes 20 minutes before it gets through your system). # If you like to limit your caffeine intake, you may want to save your quota for when you experience your natural dip. "

Evil! I don't drink caffeine! I usually get 6-7 hrs of sleep but I am most awake at around 10pm-12 or 1 am.

I found NOT drinking caffeine improves my overall alertness. Without it I set my own rhythm for waking up, sleeping, being tired, etc. With it I just get these spikes of alert after drinking coffee, then even more down, then more alert, etc. It makes my day completely unbearable, and god forbid I don't get my coffee.

However I noticed my most alert time is mainly due to the fact that around 10pm to 1am nobody bothers me. I can pretty much do whatever I want without anyone pestering me for "honey-dos" or any distractions.

GrandMasterBirt··on How we hash our Javascript for better caching and less breakage on updates
Tahts exactly what I did about 6 months ago. "/path/file.js?varsion=timestamp" where timestamp is:

A) The last modified time of the file in milliseconds B) The current time milliseconds if in debug mode

Depending on if debug mode is turned on the minified file or original is served to the client. I minify on-demand since it's so fast and files rarely change, only the first request takes the hit and it is not a big hit, maybe 1 or 2 seconds.

I serve the pages with a 1 yr expiration time for these files.

I do the same for CSS.

It works very nicely :) NEVER have to clear a browser's cache when developing and garantee that all users always have the latest code.

GrandMasterBirt··on Thousands call for Turing apology
"Frankly, I really don't understand what the fuss is all about, so what if some people like other people from the same gender. Just let them be, it is their lives after all."

Do not let yourself use the "to each his own" argument. Its PROVEN (like 2+2 = 4) that that outlook is plain ol' wrong (you can find it on wiki or something).

What about people who roam around naked? Whats wrong with that? Its their bodies, who are we to discourage them? What about child molesters, they are having CONSENSUAL sex with young teenagers, who are we to stop them its their bodies.

Please pick a better argument.

Now: Treating homosexuals as outcasts is no worse than treating black people as outcasts for the way they are born. These people are not doing anything wrong (some might even argue that they are doing right by our society by helping with overpopulation problems) and they just want to be treated as normal people who happen to do something you don't completely approve of, not as criminals, or outcasts!

In any case people have discriminated against groups for all of recorded history. So we need to stop it as much as possible because from ALL of history we can see what good comes out of discrimination.

GrandMasterBirt··on Thousands call for Turing apology
True, it will just mean that homosexuals won't be treated to required mind-altering drugs (not the good stuff) and barred from working.
GrandMasterBirt··on Studies Find Reward Often No Motivator
Thats true, and I find that true in my own work, but low compensation also turns someone off just as much.

As long as your programmer feels they are being paid a fair amount, give them fun work to do and they'll slave away at it like billions of dollars are going to come out of it.

GrandMasterBirt··on [dead]
Things about radeology and prices:

Many people are not aware but it makes a BIG difference what radeologist you go to. The radeologist is the person who distinguises between a normal and abnormal growths. This is the specialist that can spot a tumor in a haystack! So you are paying for skills just like you pay for a surgeon, and no less important.

In new york I haven't seen 1500 radeologists unless I go to some rich-people places. I pay about 400 bucks for my brain mris. Fortunately the insurance covers most of it. The price is for the doctor, the machine time (hey its an expensive machine), operator time, etc. Though some machines work much faster than others. (a 5-10 minute procedure vs a 30-50 minute one).

And don't forget, lots of the great prices of lawyers suing doctors for everything are passed right on to you. And the fact that some americans are uninsured and have to be treated at hospitals means that those who are paying get to be charged extra to offset the problem.

So yea a universal health care system would benefit everyone and drive down prices.

GrandMasterBirt··on Ask HN: Haiku?
Son-of-a-gun the

haiku returned to my life

I despise it still

I refuse to post

more haikus to this here thread

I feel so dirty.

GrandMasterBirt··on Enough Erlang
Look erlang might be a great language but we need more hakell articles! In fact what happened to prolog? I want the prolog articles as ways to bump stuff.
GrandMasterBirt··on Why AT&T Killed Google Voice
My point with this is that there is no revolution... yet. It has a loooong way to go. And since BB on ATT has google voice its not ATT who is blocking or more drastic measures will be taken. In fact if anything google voice serves the BB customers much more than the iPhone ones. The BB customers are the ones who pay for massive minutes for business conversations and need this systems more. Having unlimited talk plans like t-mobile's fave-five calling one google voice number is what is really going to hurt telephone companies.
