GrandMasterBirt··on Negative Cashback from Microsoft's Bing Cashback
Vendors can easily beef up prices and give cash backs because they have to pay a "finders fee" to the engine line google, or anyone in fact. Evil!
GrandMasterBirt··on End of an Era: Pirate Bay Tracker Shuts Down
Yes and no.

Currently sites like torrentz.com give multiple trackers for torrents so that you can get the best set of peers/seeds for a torrent. These sites are going to become moot.

Also the legal issues associated with running TPB is going to literally go away for all future business. TPB can't be held responsible for holding an MD5 hash of a file, since they don't host trackers anymore they won't be responsible for even facilitating anything. Basically the record industries have to go after the customers yet again.

The only thing left is an IP masker mechanism which is super easy to use in torrents and torrents will become completely untraceable :P ok fine someone will find a way.

GrandMasterBirt··on End of an Era: Pirate Bay Tracker Shuts Down
As one other post said, TPB is not shutting down, but marking the end of an era where trackers were needed. Trackerless torrents are going to become vastly popular very very soon.

This is great. Basically the authorities are fighting a superior technology with nothing but the greatest of benefits: everyone contributes when downloading, so the load is not 100% on the server to serve the content. And the authorities are not giving good alternatives. ISPs are not working together with bt developers to make a protocol friendly for everyone, instead they are fighting to keep the protocol down.

O well I like the part about the servers being given to a museum.

Exact same thing happened to me. I get an IM "lets go to the movies where its dark and damp and you can be in your cave and shit, bring a laptop"
GrandMasterBirt··on Intel, AMD to Bury Antitrust Hatchet; Intel to Pay $1.25b
Yea getting hit by anti-trust laws can be damn costly to a company.
GrandMasterBirt··on Starcraft AI competition
MMMM sounds cool. Would be nice to practice against some challenging AIs vs the crappy one provided by SC that cheats to win :P Specially without perfect awareness.

Would be awesome if the AIs had a difficulty tweak that allowed them to be used in actual SC games :)

GrandMasterBirt··on Driving a car with an iPhone.
Yea back that it all looked so futuristic. All we really need is a gyrosensor and some processing power. The iPhone app aint anything amazingly special, its the hardware they built that is :P Wait, no its not.
GrandMasterBirt··on Microsoft Threatens Bountii for Exposing Bing Cashback Flaw
KA-POW!

Feels like that episode of family guy (post-apocalypse) when the town destroys all weapons only to be destroyed by mutated stewies.

YWFFTMMR is an accurate representation of all programmers working massive overtime and getting no overtime pay for it, just "its part of your salary, bitch"

Now twitter/facebook/myspace/etc make money by YOU writing your blogs, YOU writing apps, etc. But then again they do provide some services.

Twitter's downtime is legendary at this point though.

GrandMasterBirt··on The power of "no"
A perfect point:

Django is about you making a web framework that makes your/other's life easier. Also doing good stuff, being in control, getting recognition, and what better resume than "I am the lead developer on the Django project"?

In the corporate world its more about making money, not getting fired, people thinking up better ways to make money with what you already have, using your talent to make money, in fact the only reason to create anything in the corporate world is either to better make money or to save money on something that currently costs more money than building + using would cost.

Granted there are exceptions, like 37signals, but they got maaaaaaaaajor recognition for ruby on rails, and that is in itself making them money, or getting them tallent (which helps them make money).

GrandMasterBirt··on The power of "no"
Its not about open source vs closed source, its about corporate development in which you are a developer with non-developers deciding what is important VS the developer has the last say.

There are times UI suffers from this, this is why we need some non-developers involved in these projects, we need to reach out to them.

However this is not just about "open source r0x0rs, close source s0x0rs" argument.

GrandMasterBirt··on The power of "no"
I believe minimalist approach is wrong and right at the same time. Wrong in it's incarnation, right in it's philosophy.

1) Do one thing, do it REALLY REALLY well.

being open source, other projects can take parts of your project and build on top of it to create a different projects (say you create a widget, and widgets have utility functions which are useful for creating sprockets, so the sprocket project depends on the widget project, but still remains it's own thing.)

Often the mentioned above fact can go overlooked "I can do it better" vs "what can I take away from that project to make a better one for my needs"

2) We still need the overarching giant featureful project. So if you create a bunch of tools which when working together can make a web framework, why not put some effort to make a good web framework that borrows from multiple projects?

As a response to the article: Create the Django Complete project. In it you integrate Django, migration, DB2 support (say a new project that gets started), The Django bar, but in the end you don't actually get the feature creep going into Django EVER to incorporate everything period. Instead you have multiple specialized independent projects, all meeting together in one project to make it better for the community.

GrandMasterBirt··on If you had 5 dollars and 2 hours, how would you make as much money as possible?
Totally worth the time. But its great, instead of thinking of what you can do with what you're given, think of what you can do with what you already have. The funding money and time you have to do anything is only there as a buffer, a push in the right direction if needed, but that money is not there to fund your work, your ideas are.

I just used aptana to auto format it.

also JQUERY is incorrectly capitalized, they are not cool, just want to seem like it. BOOOO!

GrandMasterBirt··on Google's Eric Schmidt on What the Web Will Look Like in 5 Years
Google powered brain augmentations streaming text-based ads directly to your nightmares?

Sorry had to be said :)

Moore's Law still holds. Except we realized that doing what we classically did was not working out. Making CPUs faster causes heat problems and those are getting very problematic (remember when computers only needed a heat sink?) So instead of building a faster car, we just build more lanes on the road, so everyone can move quickly. Remember a 2nd core is almost double the capabilities, we just need software to catch up :P

GrandMasterBirt··on Google Wave: we came, we saw, we played D&D
Not true, its where cameras and shit come in. I honestly can't solve the logistics problems of playing DnD with friends in different states weekly :P

GrandMasterBirt··on The false god of coffee
The only time I drank coffee in the last 4 yrs has been after my wife had an apendectamy and I went from work, to hospital, to work no sleep.

Coffee gives me about 15-20 minutes high, then its a crash mid-work so need more coffee. I never concentrate better and if I'm sleepy I remain sleepy but hyper.

I wake up perfectly fine without it. It is the routine that wakes you up not the coffee.

Also it tastes like shit.

GrandMasterBirt··on Kindle 2 Fails Man's Drop Test, Forces Amazon To Pay Him $400
I had a similar experience with Direct TV. They installed my dish without permission from my building management, I got a takedown notice, and didnt want to pay the 430 dollar termination fee. Turns out they could not install without permission and they did. This is beside the fact that they totally fucked up my order. And their service sucks ass.

I called multiple times and sent 5 emails, each getting closer and closer to a lawsuit. $400 from someone willing to fight is less pricey than a day or two in court. They just don't want to give this to anyone, if you are willing to fight you will usually get what you deserve.

In this case, the guy already had laws listed and probably just made it clear that there will be a day in court. Its cheaper to take the $400 hit.

GrandMasterBirt··on Kindle 2 Fails Man's Drop Test, Forces Amazon To Pay Him $400
There was a comment in the blog "when do we believe everything in advertisement".

There are laws against false advertising. You can't do it, major fines and lawsuits. Otherwise I'd sell toothpaste claiming it cured cancer. Prove me wrong, and if you do, good for you, you win a death by cancer.

GrandMasterBirt··on Why hasn't Vista sold well?
If Apple takes it upon themselves to write/test drivers VS relying only on the manufactures to do it, then you are sure that since apple has a stake in it, they will test it well. This is a consequence of controlling what hardware goes into your computer. If you want to plug your soundcard into a mac, better get in touch with apple. Since they know about all the sound drivers, video drivers, etc, they can group where necessary. Being *nix based also gives benefits of having open source drivers.

In any case how many different drivers are out there for Windows Sound? How many are out there for Linux? Bash ALSA or OSS all you want, but they support a ton of hardware, port that sort of support to windows or mac and you got yourself ONE driver heavily tested by freaken' everyone which makes debugging easier with a central point of service.

GrandMasterBirt··on Why hasn't Vista sold well?
Don't forget about creative's sound drivers and such.

MS is doing the right thing. They showed Windows 7 to the world for a year. Gave people public testing (to get ppl excited) and now are doing major stability tests before release.

I heard wonderful things about Win7. So honestly its a good thing. About time MS got a kick in the shin about making shitty operating systems. If they bounce back, they are a good company, and I don't doubt they will. Apple can't ride the "cool" wave forever.

GrandMasterBirt··on Why hasn't Vista sold well?
People rush to upgrade macos the day it is released. Upgrade is cheap for em too. Oh and no need to format (yea beat that microsoft)

Trying a mac os upgrade is not a big deal, you can rollback and all works fine. Do that with windows let me know how ot goes. I never upgraded because I didn't feel like formatting I'm just lazy and if I don't like it I gota spend another day installing xp? Aaaagh.

I used it a bit it is actually quite an improvement on xp in terms of simple administration like setting up wifi and getting meaningful error messages. Not a big fan of the new start menu. Performance on 1gb of ram is attrocious. Why would they even sell it that way?

GrandMasterBirt··on Why hasn't Vista sold well?
Because vista's drivers were not solid during release.

Bsods killed it

High spec requirements killed it

People selling pcs with less than 2 gigs of ram killed it

And the gains the user got were overshadowed by shitty performance, bsods, and the software they need not working. Not to mention the whole upgrade to a priucier version to get the nice ui feature you want.

Also the netbooks can't handle vista so that entire market died.

Also harder to priate = noone using it at home = not evangelizing at work :P

GrandMasterBirt··on JDK7 to have escape analysis on by default...also back ported to JDK6
Not to mention if necessary languages like scala can optimize for maximum use of this feature.

Now... If only my job would move from 1.4.2 to 7 :)

GrandMasterBirt··on Nvidia working on CUDA-based anti-virus
While true, this means that the CPU can be used for other things.

Also I doubt its I/O bound because there is still lots of scanning to do (but I am not 100% sure). Also with fast hard drives (or SSDs) it might be CPU bound.

Also, when running applications currently the CPU must load the app, scan it, then run it, while the GPU can probably do it faster thus making the system overall more responsive.

Wait... Also, the real-time scanner is limited. It does not do a full check on every file because that is too expensive (though it might be damn close), with the GPU they might have the power to make scanning through your whole computer 99% moot since every time any program executes the virus scanner gives it a 100% scan, fast, without the user even noticing that it happened.

I can see lots of benefits of this. Go nvidia.

I am hoping nvidia kicks intel to the stone age with a new processor and such. Or at least comes up with some REAL competition, something that AMD started but could not maintain momentum. This is probably step 1. :)
